You have to have talent to win, period. Injuries, a lack of timely hitting, and poor planning have left this club where it is. No amount of managerial moves would have the Cubs over .500 right now. Leyland was the manager of the Rockies here, and wore out his welcome after one season of .444 baseball. He called out players regularly, and it didn't make the Rockies any better, because the team's talent sucked. Without the right player mix, no amount of managerial skill will turn things around. "Lighting a fire" only does so much...I'm sure most of us played baseball at the high school or college level, and I don't remember ever being in a slump due to a lack of effort, where a coach could get me out of it by chewing my ass out in front of my parents. So why would Dusty publically call out players when the whole team is struggling. Good way to lose a team.
