  1. wins may not be a great indicator but maddux has always won at least 16 games. many with the braves, and yes that helps but he has also done originally with the cubs and now again with the cubs. this cubs teams are average. he is on target to win 16 again and his best time of year is approaching. he has kept us in the race the last 2 years while various other stud pitchers miss time. he and z both won 16 last year...no one else was close- not prior,clement,rusch,wood..and again this year no one else is on target to win 16. his era is higher but he does a great job. i haven't looked this year but last year his era in his wins was very, very good. unfortunately he had a couple outings early that he was shelled. if i remember right his era minus his first 3 starts was 3.30ish. it would be nice to trade him to a contender like san diego because i think he would excel at petco park- no cheap hrs in that park(and that is his down fall) but if not i think we owe him his option. he came here and took less upfront to help the club...if we want other players to think about doing the same then we better not "screw" someone as classy as maddux out of his deserved money.
  2. we won and we lost on this switch. we are basically still paying both players. baltimore gets a free player. burnitz has better stats than sammy but they are certainly not stud numbers. they probably won't match sammy's last years numbers. we are far worse a team than we were last year and our outfield and offense is worse.
  3. i don't think corey is done. however he needs to be our 3rd best offensive ofer not the guy we depend on to do it all! he plays d. he is very cheap at 500,000. unless someone really gives us something special why trade for a b level prospect? heck if he hit .250, stole bases, hit some hrs and played d there would be no problem. let him hit 7th and just play.
  4. in my mind the problem isn't that we traded garland. we have sveral very similar guys who may end up better BUT garland for karchner sickens me....garland of the last 3 years for karchner sickens me. willis bothers me simply because i have heard that the marlins didn't even want willis but the cubs threw him in. at that time we lost our closer and needed someone right then and teams are not looking to trade closers the first week of the season...6 fingers didn't work but i understand the logic.
  5. everyone could go save for aram, lee, z and prior. really and truly if we have them and we can certainly sign, trade or pick off the scrap heap a team that is better than what we have. i like several of the players but realistically players like walker, barrett, hairston, burnitz, neifi, holla and our bullpen are a dime a dozen. now i would like to keep williams, dempster(since we can not depend on getting anyone to replace him!) wood(although if someone wants to overspend...go for it), patterson. reality is that as far as trades go holla may have value to someone's bench, walker, remingler, rusch are about all we have that someone else would want. neifi, barrett or burnitz might go if someone gets an injury but i can't see getting anything real valuable. in my opinion our best bet is to be buyers with an eye on the future. grab a higher priced star that someone is dumping...like lee for choi. also if anyone offers anything for are desposible guys...take it and start over. if we got "a" ball players for hairston, burnitz, holla, barrett, walker and perez there will be of role players available in the offseason.
  6. burnitz is out performing sosa but that does not nmake him good. he would be fine if we had 2 other stud ofers but we don't. burnitz is our stud and he is not cut out for that role. factor in that we are still paying sosa type dollars for burnitz's performance(due to still paying sosa $) and it is a poor deal. hendry has a 100 mil payroll and a 40 mil team. that is his doing..he absolutely handicapped this team and completely relied on the starting pitchers carrying us.
  7. firing dusty might spark a little fire but this teams problems are much deeper. fire hendry! he has brought in a high payroll that can not play the game. blame dusty all you want but we have 2 major league players-aram and lee. we have an injury prone pro at short in nomar. hendry took a team that was on the brink of national league domination and blew it up for a .500 level team that is only that because it has pitchers and plays in the central. if we were still in the east we would be out of this race by july 1. we had a team that needed a lead off man, and a upgrade at short and closer/bullpen..he left that they it was until deadline and has yet to address lead off or closer. he has added holes in left and right, a crap shoot at short, catcher, and bullpen....yeah firing dusty might help but i still say that if you take these pitchers, and this schedule you could put almost any pro players in the lineup and be right where we are... thanks jim for blowing this oppurtunity to break a 100 year drought.
  8. i don't see burnitz as being wanted. not amny teams are struggling at of so badly that burnitz would be help.plain and simple he isn't that good. holla would be more likely because he is cheaper and can be a bat off the bench and spot starter. i don't see someone paying burnitz 5 mil to spot start. maddux could be an option if someone needs to stabilize a staff for the stretch run. remingler may have a chance too. for whatever reason teams keep wanting lefties..even bad ones. remember the yanks grabbed heredia! beyond that it may be luck of the draw on an injury that happens to a team. we really only have aram, lee and barrett that could help someone. obviously pitching is better but i wouldn't want to lose dempster, prior,z and if wood went it would have to be for value!
  9. corey is struggling terribly but they main problem is that because of hendry's ofer picks corey is expected to be the main offensive threat. he ias expected to be beltran and pujols rolled into one. if he put up last years numbers with some production at one corner and short..we would be fine. he is very cheap right now. plays good d and has some production. if we had one stud corner of we could just set corey at 6th or 7th and let him play d and be inexpensive.
  10. hendry blew this last year. we had a chance to really put a move on the rst of the nl but didn't. we talked about from the end of 2003, we needed a lead off man,a closer and a shortstop(an upgrade on gonzo).we were heading towrd some flexibility because of losing contracts. we added maddux, which is still a good move. i know some are pining for clement butr forget it. he is getting 10 runs a game and would never, ever get that here or be 9-1. he has always been a .500 pitcher.he has never won 15 games. maddux is not an ace anymore. he is steady and he has never not won 15. he is heading there again this year. he is 7-6..the team is 3 games below .500 he has done more foor the cubs than just win. he is way above .500 for a team that is simply not very good(especially when you don't factor in starting pitching.) this team is a contender for 2 reasons and 2 reasons only 1- starting pitching..they could still cause damage if they got in 2-they have a very easy schedule in the central we are more expensive this year than last and we are far worse. hendry has put together a truly bad team. not very good offensive players.not particularily good defensive players and a very young and green bullpen.
  11. maddux saved our butt last year. he and z were it. he has won 16 games at least every year. yes 9 mil is steep for someone who is 4-5 starter. however, he is no worse than our 3rd....wood has better stuff but he is hurt, will continue be hurt and has never won more than 14. to me we are paying him a lot of money for what he brings. promise and 50 censt gets you a phone call. also part of the reason we would pay him 9 mil is because he was a team player and took less up front to help the team. heck he might even work it lower if he thought the cubs would spend it to help the club. the cubs have benefited from his knowledge, his 300th win, his professionalism and just having back as a cub to go out of their way to "screw him" out of the option would be a travesty-business or not. i am sure the free agents would be lining up to give them the cubs discount after that. if we can eat 12 mil to have sammy not play for us, we better eat 3-4 mil (amount he is overpaid) for a classy veteren pitcher who could lead us in wins....again.
  12. i say manuel but the only thing that may save him is that mangement just got rid of bowa....who it seems may not have been the problem afterall.
  13. ... perhaps with holla as the projected starter, hendry maybe should have signed a real left handed bat off the bench. it all goes back to the fact that besides nomar we filled in a bunch of scrubs. that being said i would certainly take my chances with dubois against anyone over macias.
