  1. i wonder if dlee and aram would know what to do if they two guys in front of them getting on base at .370 clip!
  2. here is what i was thinking. we are a couple of weeks from the end of the season. we are going to have many changes on our forty man. we have many-many prospects already up before sept call ups. pie was not even coming..who do we really need to add to our 40 man in place of williams?at least at this point.i certainly do not see what the rush to drop williams is? we do not save big money(by dropping him) because he is in the minors...correct? he is 24 years old...if he spent the next 5 years in aaa trying to figure it out, he would still be only 29. there just seems to be a whole lot of reasons to hang on to him..regardless of performance. minor league ball is rarely about who is playing the best. isn't hill 2 years odler than williams and still trying to break in? williams may never reach his potential but i have to believe he has a better chance of doing something ryu...and probably some of the others. the bottom line is this guys could have had some value..maybe a lot and without really having to, we gave him a way for nothing...we could do that anytime...why right now? i just don't see the pressing need to give him away.
  3. it really shows up when you don't have a lot of pop in your lineup. little things in general get magnified. every defensive miscue, every base running blunder or just plain ole errors mean so much more when you don't have great offense
  4. last year in talking baout revenue with the trib/cubs..they were saying that a full house averaged $600,000 in concessions..that did not include parking. dropping attendence by a third cost them 200,000 every home date...might br a drop but i don't remember people staying away like this in recent years. hopefully this little drop in revenue at least opens some eyes that it isn't a given that we fill the stadium every single game. it would have been a bit more important had it been in july but at least it's something.
  5. if we had a 3-6 of dlee,c.lee, soriano and aram...not too mention a 7 of j.jones...all we need is guys on in front of them, doesn't matter how fast or if they even could steal a base.
  6. since i don't live near chicago i can't go to games regularly but i have to say that this is the first time i can remember having zero interest in watching or even listening to games.
  7. i think the point was rather than putting in middle relief or not pitching him, which would be a demotion, put him on the dl and try to save some face/confidence. he is signed as the closer for next season. i don't see hendry getting someone else and i worry if we shift howry and eyre to that role fulltime. i don't want see a hawkins incident. also that is about our only solid part of the team is the set up guys..we move them around and we weaken us in another spot. so let's do whatever to get him right again.
  8. i think this offseason will tell us how comfortable hendry is with his position. if goes big and trys to make a splash immediately..he's on the hot seat..he does his normal band-aid approach or goes young..he is very comfortable. i also think his manager will be in large part dependent on his approach this offseason. if he goes young, i do not see a proven guy coming in to teach..especially with only 2 years on the gm's deal. i would think that would include giradi. i don't see him going the rebuilding route after the success he had this year. he will hold a lot of cards if he is let go! i still can not believe hendry didn't get fired and got extended! it is baffling. it's one thing if you put this type of product on the field in kc or tampa. they use limited resources andreally do not expect/try to win. we spent 300 mil in 3 years and our 10 games below .500. injuries mean a lot but wow!
  9. i think we either need to trade murton for pitching or sign a power hitter in a non power spot(soriano-a.jones type) it would be a waste to make him the 4 -5th outfielder.he has a lot of upside, he should be a .300 hitter the rest of his career but he probably won't be more than a 20 hr guy. this would be ok if you didn't have a cf who won't hit 5 and a rf that won't hit but 25-30 every year. it will be difficult to contend if your outfield won't combine for 45 hrs in wrigley for the year...the other problem is that if we have an outfield like that it just magnifies the fact that dlee and aram have to be healthy and very-very productive for us to be competitive.
  10. you hit it on the head....murton is arguably the best of the lot.especially factoring in age and potential but he would be the guy to upgrade because we signed jones for 3 years and traded 3 prospects for pierre (and will probably resign him) so to upgrade then would be to say "we screwed up" and no one is going to take the deal-yet. in my opinion this is the truly bad part of the jones signing. he has done very well for us...better than we thought, but having jones menas we can only hope to play 1 of either murton or pie- arguably our best 2 prospects.
  11. That's more than just 16 hits, it's 45 more bases. PS -- I'm in no way advocating that Barrett be converted to LF because I think that would be a ridiculously bad idea. yes it's 45 extra bases for the year! right now it's about one extra base per every 2.5- 3 games. my point wasn't to dis barrett..he is a very good offensive catcher but when you look at corners or outfielders his stats would not be outstanding.
  12. I'm pretty sure dropping Prior's $3.5M won't allow us to get Zito, Schmidt and help get a position player. I could be wrong. the key word is HELPED... along with woods 12 mil and maddux 9 mil...3.5 mil could HELP...not get but HELP get. and tim i am sorry that i am the first poster who missed on a fact. i am sure that you have never been wrong on any of your posts.
  13. he is 7-12 with an era in the 5.00's since july 1 2005. he has had 1 good month i guess with his lower cost i can understand not quitting on him yet...however, i would certainly not be unhappy if we traded him for something of value. if we wait and find out he won't ever be the same(which is our history) we will get nothing just like we did for wood. also if dropping prior's salary got us zito and schmidt...and helped get a postition player, i would be in favor of that. however it's low enough that it shouldn't but then again we were 1.5 mil short on furcal.
  14. great stats..but you should probably look at his splits after he was injured. he was horrible and it continued this year. from june on of 2005.
  15. that was just a poke at tim becuase he felt we had to deal(errr..i mean give away) williams because he was wasting space on the 40 man roster.... and please i am not saying williams=prior, it's just a little joke
  16. how close was he to signing furcal? about a "neifi" amount. plain and simple do not overpay for neifury..and you have the money to overpay for the guy you really wanted...
  17. you really need to look a little closer at the difference. the differnce is 6 hrs, 1 3b and 9 2bs....or 16 extra base hits over 120 games that they have played or around 3 more total bases every 10 games i don't call that significantly better than murton certainly not too the point that we should consider teaching a catcher to be an outfielder
  18. Do you ever bother to check stats before posting? Barrett's .307/.368/.517 line this year is easily above average for a corner spot, and is significantly better than anything any of our outfielders. yeah i did....have you looked at murton's stats? .295/.360/.429 looks very similar.... he(murton) has 6 fewer hrs but more rbi and bb you may also want to look at corner players(3rd and 1st) and see how their stats match up. barrett only is close in average. he is way behind in obp and slg....not too mention hrs and rbi. giambi is a great example in hitting .251 but has an obp over .400 do you ever check stats before posting?
  19. i thought was his salary.... of course hanging on to a guy who has a hand full of games in two years with an era around 5 and has shown no sign of getting better is brilliant..... and he's not wasting space on the forty man.
  20. as opposed to our roaring success this year?
  21. 6 mil a year can be better spent than "hoping" a guy is healthy at least for the third year straight. if we could drop prior to go with wood...we would loosen up 18 mil on those 2 and 9 mil on maddux...that would go a long ways to signing schmidt and zito...and part of a slugger....then if they fall apart we can then start looking at this curse thing sorry it's time....i just think we missed our window on dealing prior.
  22. neifi perez...the straw that stirs the drink!
  23. an average outfielder or corner guy adds more offense than barrett. he is a great offensive catcher but his stats pale campared to a good 3b like aram...so moving positions isn't a great move. anyway we have a leftfielder that basically matches barretts stats right now.
  24. right now if we could just get out from under his deal and sign someone that is more dependable. we should have done this with wood last year but didn't we shoudl ahve had tejada for prior, cdeno but we blew that one! we just can't afford to hope they are healthy...yes, we risk losing a great pitcher but we have wiated 2 full seasons and enough is enough!
  25. the difference is that we have a gm who put this team together and REALLY THOUGHT THEY WOULD WIN...back then they just grabbed some guys and went to play... at 39 there have been very few cubs teams that were put together with the idea that they would contend.the best i can say is taht we had a few that had a chance to contend if everything went exactly right for us!
