  1. I understand the thoughts on the broken record of "we can do it in the offseason" but we have to get the best deal we can for him. We have no ideas what teams are offering. If they are lowballing because of the question marks then yes, we can and should wait for later. We have that control, which allows them to be a bit pickier with their return. We need to maximize the returns on everyone. It would be silly to trade him for below market value, just so we don't have to use "the wait til next offseason" line. We have to try to sell as high as possible- Dempster pretty much has to be done for whatever now, but not Garza. If it does last until the offseason, I think he is gone then for the best deal they can find at that time. I don't think they want a replay of this year with injuries, and certainly don't want to get down to the deadline and have to take anything they can get for him. Believe me, I want a slam dunk at the deadline. Anything to be excited about is more than welcome! But in the back of my mind, I keep telling myself we have to be patient, get the best deal we can and have faith in the new FO!
  2. wonder if his wife wishes she had waited until he got to LA for the divorce. You know..california communial property rules and all...
  3. Hendry seemed better at taking others salary problems for our fading prospects. Oh, and bidding up himself for free agents.
  4. Allegedly Vitters will get an audition this fall to see if he should get the job or get a shot to earn the job. Stewart's future may hinge on that outcome. BUT it's not like we have bunches of guys knocking on the door to take ML spots. He could step into Baker's role or pinch hit. He'll still only be 27.
  5. 1 thing that stands out on him, last year he had 11 complete games, this year 0. When you look at some of the guys out there, it makes you wonder why the questions on Garza. Yes, he has what seems like a really minor injury, but compared to what some of the down sides of the top pitchers, it seems like his problem is minor. (Especially since you would have a complete physical for him). Lee, Johnson, Shields, Beckett all have had poor season and although they have been very good previously, they all show signs of never being that guy again. With Garza, at least you have to believe that over the next year plus, he will be Garza. It seems like I would go for that rather than hope Johnson or Beckett return to their form.
  6. Shields is not a hot pile of garbage. Garza is better, but Shields is healthy. He is not a front end of the rotation guy, and he is not the guy from last year. He also probably isn't the guy from this year either. Stats aren't bad...he isn't Liriano. We have no use for him but some teams would. The teams that are looking at Shields are looking at a 3 or 4 guy. Other than Greinke and Hamels(both free agents), there weren't front end guys out there that don't have baggage or questions. If they aren't free agents to be, then there usually is a reason they are available. The rays may have dropped interest because the feedback was that the value simply wasn't there.
  7. no soriano? or just thinking it's not too likely? Dempster is my 1. We have to deal him or it's a set back/ missed opportunity. Garza can wait to get the best haul. Marmol, Soto and Soriano should clear waivers and can be dealt later this year. A salary dump would be nice on any of the three. Baker, Johnson, Camp, and others would net some borderline prospects but probably nothing earthshaking. Name that baffle me. Dejesus, why has no one even looked to get him? He has been very solid. He is not expensive. He has time on his deal. The Yankees went and got Ichiro, but Dejesus has been better. Seems like he would be right up the alley of teams like pittsburgh, washington and baltimore who are all struggling in the OF.
  8. I don't understand exactly why he wouldn't just go to Atlanta. They are in the thick of the race, and barring a collapse like last year, they should at least get a WC He is a free agent. He can go anywhere he chooses then. He has basically 9 weeks of season left- half of that would be played on the road anyway. so 4.5 more weeks away from home. He could throw well on a big stage and up his value greatly.
  9. There are so many variables that play into how soon we are "re-built". Obviously every deal we make for prospects gets us a little closer. The more we get, the better chance of some working out. The more of our current system that actually pan out is a huge factor. We need as many of our "close" prospects to become viable as possible. What options become available in the near future-whether FA's or trades will matter. Health of everyone (God knows this hasn't worked in our favor this year) Young guys taking the next step. I don't see how it happens any sooner than 2014 but teams have made surprises (orioles, a's, pirates) It seems they had a lot of young talent that grew up quicker than expected. We don't have that wealth of young talent yet.
  10. I really sounds like it shouldn't have been a problem. The consensus was there is no way that the FO did not have a list of teams he was willing to be traded to. They still have to get his official ok, but they had to have thought it was a formality if they already had a list.
  11. The Score is currently ripping Dempster for his handling of this. Interesting to hear some of his comments and then compare those to his actions. They mentioned his saying earlier this year that he appreciated everything the team and the fans had done for him, and that he wouldn't be a guy that stands in the way of the future of the organization.... Then they mentioned that he has come out and said "he never said he didn't want to go to Atlanta, that he just needed to look over the situation. Which the reporters basically said was a flat out lie. They both seem to be pretty off base right now. The other interesting topic was what would the reception for Dempster be if he takes the mound for the Cubs on Tuesday after the deadline. I hope they boo him mercilessly.
  12. Andy Petitte has a set back in his rehab. Hello, yankees? dempster? garza?...
  13. I have confidence things will get done. The only pressing move is Dempster because he will never clear waivers. Garza can be held for a better deal in the offseason and even into next year (if teams aren't ready to ante up). Soriano will clear. No reason to think guys like Johnson, Baker, Soto, Marmol would not clear waivers. I think part of the frustration is that this FO has been very tight lipped. There is nothing getting leaked at all. After dealing with the circus of Hendry, it can be easy to assume the worst. As Cub fans we need to have patience and believe that our FO- (a) knows what it is doing (b) has a paln and © will get things done. Also after a long frustrating season I think many fans are hoping that the trade deadlines will provide something to be excited about. We are hoping to be "wowed" by the amazing deals they have worked. We have to remember that sometimes the smartest deal is the one that you do not make.
  14. Probably because the next 2 thread's are about a nickname for Rizzo, and Byrd's connections to balco. Not exactly earth-shaking hardcore news to discuss.
  15. I liked the deal for Houston, but Arizona got a league average bat at 3B, controllable guy in Johnson. Borchering is a butcher in the field, almost definitely won't stick at 3B himself, needing to move to LF. Good thing for him there are now quite a few open spots in Houston.
  16. Good point. Pirates have moved toward competitive the last few years. I did not expect the orioles or A's to be even close. Sometimes when you are this close to the situation you tend to look at things a bit harsher. I also am thinking of a Cubs team next year without Garza, and Dempster. It's hard to see us moving closer without those 2 on the staff. (Of course, a lot depends on who is picked up on any deals)
  17. actually I heard colvin was playing through a really bad hangnail..showed a lot of heart shaking that off.
  18. Ok, I see that. I really didn't mean it that way. I really just think he has shown enough that it won't happen. Now with the wrist injury perhaps there is light at the end of tunnel but before that I just didn't see it. Now the question could be "when did the injury become a factor? Has it been there all year or did it flair up? We probably won't ever know for sure.
  19. Well it would give us something to post (complain) about...
  20. The only way to contend in 2013 is to spend like a crazy person. Which allegedly Theo could have done this year but wanted to do it correctly. I hope we are better but I would much rather be bad for another year, and have a base to build in order to contend for the next 10 years. In order to contend for several years, we must have depth in the farms- especially arms. We have to grow some of our own stars to save money, and still have enough chips to be able to get the help where we still need it. It's a process. A long frustrating process, but it does take time. Hopefully if we can re-stock now, and in the offseason with the few chips we currently have. We can speed up the process.
  21. agreed, and as you say it's not the Rays style.
  22. Ted Lilly makes a re-hab start on Sunday. The Dodgers will decide the next move based on that appearance. Fife threw well on Friday, and would need to start again on Wednesday, but then they have off days each of the next 2 weeks, allowing the dodgers to skip a rotation spot if needed in order to allow Lilly to return. If all goes well he could return after 1 more rehab start.
  23. I guess the Rays, who have been when of the smartest clubs when it comes to buying and selling talent, will suddenly take on one of the worst contracts in baseball history inorder to rid themselves of Pena.
  24. I keep moving the goal posts? Interesting. The entire gist of this argument is that I dare to think that Stewart is not going to come around, and that his little run was not a signal of anything turning the corner. Hard for anyone (but you) to say that he had come around at all this season. The best thing that happened to your point of view is that was his wrist. Without his wrist injury, how could you possibly argue a line of .201 .292 .335 .627 is good in any way, shape or form. This basis of argument has never changed.
