The problem isn't whether he has big time power or not. He is very good. He has a lot of value because of defense but the simple fact is that this team needs him to be more than what he is currently. We need Goldschmit/Davis output not Adam Laroche. He is supposed to be the cornerstone of the future, and certainly he can continue to improve. However the timeline of the turnaround of this team is based on Rizzo and Castro being stars not just good, or solid players. Sometimes expectations can tarnish a players actually performance because fans want more.

Don't know why this is viewed as bad or a surprise. I just don't see anyway you can honestly look at this team and see them contend soon- without some big signings. The only people who make this seem negative are ones who had a pie in the sky look at this team and thought they could contend. Bottom line is to be a serious contender in 2014 we needed almost every turn to go our way and not many have. Rizzo and Castro are not where we need them to be. Scheirholtz is a plus but we will soon need a center and left fielder. We will still need a bullpen, and when Garza goes we will be looking for a front end starter, and probably 1 other (hopefully Baker). We could be as close as a true number 3 hitter, a starter and back end of the bullpen away, but that would include Castro, Rizzo, Castillo all taking steps forward and no one regressing. It would be very helpful if Jackson, Bogusevic, and Vitters all came through but it doesn't look like it will be soon if ever(other than Bogusevic).

Angels and Baltimore could be in the mix for Garza. Seems like a 1/2 year rental would be in line for any of the three rather than a longer term player. Baltimore currently very much in the mix despite having the second worst starters era...

Who plays third against righties if Valbuena gets hurt? By keeping him, he's added depth for the team if something happens. If you release him, you've got nothing. So, unless you feel he's just that much of an embarrassment or distraction, what is to be gained by cutting him? On this current team does it really matter who plays 3rd if Valbuena gets hurt? I agree nothing is gained by cutting him. I would just as soon sit on the bench at triple A and take no more at bats away from Vitters, Lake, or Murphy. Then every time he makes a dumb comment, suspend him without pay. Seriously, is there any possible way anyone in MLB even gives him a shot after this fiasco?

There lots of teams worse off at 3B than the Cubs are right now. Is that a serious question? it is, but you have to read what I wrote. basically I'm talking about going into this season. Also I mentioned that Valbuena (and Ransom for that matter) have been good. I think that if Valbuena continues his future will be at 2b, not 3b. He has far outperformed what anyone thought he would do. If he does continue the cubs are fine, but there has to be at least a little bit of doubt in everyone's mind. Surely there is in the cubs FO, or there would be little reason to keep a pain in the butt like Stewart. Basically it's more of a slam on Stewart, because coming into this season you would have to say if he can't beat out Luis Valbuena and Cody Ransom, he doesn't have much of a chance to be on any MLB roster.

I think we have the kind of chips that could bring back some ready or near ready players. Teams already need pitching, and we have it. Teams will need bullpen help, and we have russell, and gregg if he continues. Injuries could make DeJesus, Soriano and even Barney necessities for a team. Teams that feel they are close tend to overspend to get the piece they think puts them over the top. Heck, we also have enough cheap-controlled players that we could pick up a talented money-dump player like aram for bobby hill. There just aren't many teams looking like sellers with wanted players. Milwaukee could have some guys, but not much else other than stanton-which is a different realm.

Stewart is trying to get released to keep his cash and find another team. But seriously what organization has as glaring a hole at 3b as the cubs? Valbuena is filling in nicely but that could change, and I'm guessing his future will be at 2b if he does continue. Bottom line if he can't break into the lineup here, he's probably got to go the LaHair route and go overseas. I can not see a MLB team even giving him a minor league deal after the way this has played out.

We need a big bat and #1 arm to contend and that depends on who else we trade. The bullpen has been better but certainly needs to be addressed. We are closer than we appear but we aren't close. We are closing in on the midway point and we have the 3rd worst record in all of baseball. It will be interesting to see who will be dealt. There seems to be a great chance to get many premium prospects and really stock our system because we should have some valued pieces, and there does not seem to be many other teams that will be sellers. Especially ones that have players that are valued. I don't think they'll keep anyone but the "foundation" pieces IF the price is right. It may also signal what the FO thinks about 2014 by how many pieces they deal.

Ryan Jackson is the shortstop at Memphis hitting .362 with a .900+ ops, talk of moving Kozma to utility soon to see what he can do. Plus they have about 8 pitchers ready or near ready for the bigs. It could have been Wong(2b) or Taveras they were talking about also. It might put a dent in their system(to deal for both) but they seem like they are covered for the next 5 years at the major league level, and that they could take a hit at the higher levels of their farm system. It's sucks to look at how many guys they have ready, and how they pull them up and they do great-just adding to their trade value. If you want to be sick look at their roster for this year. They have 4 young guys called up as starters-who all threw well- AND that's not counting Miller who is up to stay. They also have 3 young relievers called up all having done well...then you realize that Lynn and Garcia are 26. I think they have some pieces they could deal

scary thing is the rumor that of Colorado falls out of contention, they may deal Tulowitski to St.L for some of their pitching, which frees up Rutledge to play short. That then opens up their SS prospect to be part of the deal for Stanton(with more of that pitching). I do not want to face a lineup with Stanton/Tulo at 3 and 4 for next half decade....

didn't like the sound of this much on Cubs and Stanton http://sports.yahoo.com/news/three-reasons-chicago-cubs-wont-trade-giancarlo-stanton-135700336.html but he makes a lot of sense. However, the fan in me is hoping- 1) That they do not trade him mid-season, and wait until the offseason 2) That we can take advantage of the players we have currently that contenders will want and fill up our system, so that we can either deal the top names listed without killing us, or have enough interesting new names to make that deal. Stanton would be a team maker for us. Adding another young big(huge) bat to the order would change our offense completely. Having that big bat be under our control for a while is even bigger. Although he is going to get a huge bump, it won't be what he would get on the free agent market. That gives us more money to sign other players. Getting him and fixing the pen, would probably be enough to be serious contenders right now. I do not like the sound of St. Louis getting involved. They have a loaded system, and I am not sure we can match a deal from them if they really want him.

Gotcha! I've the TV broadcast on Len and JD are on the TV broadcast. I've got Stoney!? Switched to WGN now...although it was fun watching them struggle with the butt whipping! If Hawk was there I'd have to keep listening!

Did you he the shot Farmer put on Castro yesterday? Something about being impossible to walk him. Funny coming from a team that has a shortstop that walked 16 times the entire year last season, has exactly 1 more walk than Castro this year.

Depending on need, we could see a Marshall like deal for Russell. Also I think Garza will have a strong market. We have many pitching options to trade but I think teams like the Angels and Yanks will want a front end guy, and even some others like Cleveland, Baltimore or even Tampa might go for him because it will only cost them for 6-8 weeks. The angels top prospect is a 3b, they also have lots of lower level (younger) pitching prospects.

It is going to be a pleasure to listen to the score for the next day and a half. If we can sweep, it'll be great all weekend! The only thing I am missing is listening to Hawk go buts about losing to the Cubs!

After having to sit through the Sox pre-game, and listen to how the Cubs would have no chance against Sale coming off his extra rest, I wanted a win pretty badly but just putting a couple up early was awesome. The booth got pretty quiet after that. I am hoping that we will have cubs pre-game even if they are finishing yesterdays game. For a while I thought we were playing the '27 Yankees.

Last year they were able to deal Reed Johnson and Jeff Baker for something. I think they could probably deal just about anyone. I think anyone expiring will be dealt at some time. They will be more careful with control players looking to get as much as possible for them. My main question is what will they do with starting pitching. They have been great at finding cheap effective starters the last 2 years. Right now there are many teams that have pitching problems, how many do we deal and who do we keep for the future? I have to believe teams like the Yankees and Angels will come calling for Garza if he shows he is healthy. For playing so poorly to start the season, we seem to have a lot of chips that contenders will be looking for, and there don't seem to be a lot of teams that will be sellers. As much as I'd hate another deep sell-off, there could be a big possibility of completely re-stocking our system.
