  1. Diffusion, a stolen base is worth about .6 of a total base to be more precise. So your 2/3 is closer than my half. The value of a stolen base includes the times that the ball goes into center and a guy goes to third. It's part of the play.
  2. I read that Soriano agreed to play LF.
  3. If we get Bradley and put him in RF, we have lost the chance to put a real 'bopper' in the lineup. And if we trade Walker to get Bradley, a middle infield of Cedeno and Perez would be pathetic offensively. We know that Hendry liked Renteria going back to Florida days. If Boston is really interested in moving him, maybe we get him and send our better prospect to Tampa with the Red Sox getting Lugo. Then the Cubs can fool themselves into thinking that they have the big bat at SS that Renteria showed in 2003. I don't think this is preferable, but the fun with Hendry is figuring out the level of his delusions.
  4. For those of us still wondering, the MLB.com piece was posted at 1:30AM Chicago time. That would seem to me to be a reason to give credence to the fact that Mitre was included.
  5. I have a dumb question that I'm hoping someone can answer. Does getting picked off 1st base count towards Caught Stealing Yes I don't think so, unless you take off for second. The ESPN stats package has pickoffs by pitcher and caught stealings as separate stats.
  6. Pierre hits ground balls. On the ground. In the grass. they will go slowly. Fielders will get them. they will not go through holes to the OF. He will be thrown out Cut the friggin' grass. I would guess that the long grass would give Pierre an opprtunity to beat out more hits. Unless the infield came in, and that also is an advantage for the hitter, he'd gain a fraction of a second. No?
  7. We're expecting a baby, so I spend a lot of my time taking care of her. I was up to get her ready for work, and decided to check on the Pierre thing really quick. Needless to say, I didn't go back to sleep. :D You're expecting a baby and you're still not sleeping? It's not going to get any better. Good luck!
  8. Because that would be really stupid. You don't put a guy with a throwing arm that rivals Jonny Damon's in RF. Pierre can't slug, can't throw. His value comes from playing CF. Except for the throwing part, isn't that the Scott Podsednick story that the Cubs are trying so hard to emulate?
  9. Not really. A double doesn't only get you to second, it pushes everybody else along at least two bases. A stolen base is worth a little more than half a total base. Also, Pierre's speed is dealt with in his batting average. If not for his speed, he'd hit .211 with no extra base hits. His leg doubles and triples are basically his entire isolated power. So his speed is well accounted for in the traditional stats.
  10. But this doesn't change the fact that Pierre is a zero. You give away enough players, you're going to regret one. And nothing is worth Pierre.
  11. Let's make a rule that to stop citing the Score. This radio station doesn't seem to ever report accurate information. Might as well cite a poster on an ESPN board or something. I've seen nothing from Hendry indicting interest in Preston Wilson. A Freudian slip?
  12. Come on Jim Bowden, get it done! Quick!
  13. Tejada makes less than Furcal. Unbelievable. But what would Tejada make if he was an FA today?
  14. Dayn Perry doesn't really represent traditional media. While I would prefer Cedeno be given a chance at Short and the money spent on the outfield, Furcal's contract isn't a bad one. It's only 3 years, the Dodgers will be done with him when he's only 30, and with baseball economics the way it is, Furcal only has to do what he's done consistently to contribute enough wins to pay for his contract; stay healthy, play decent Shortstop, and hit .280/.350/.4whatever. As revenues go up the pressure on salaries will lift. Last year Clement got 3/25. Burnett is about to get 5/55. Last year Renteria got 4/40. I think the Dodgers did OK.
  15. On the 8:00 update on The Score, they said the Cubs are currently pursuing Milton Bradley at the winter meetings. So yeah, apparently they did jump the gun. Good news. Yes it is (good news). I was sure that this was a precursor to our acquisition of Jay Payton.
  16. If the Cubs had a game tonight their OF would be Murton, Mabry and Patterson. Stew on that for a second.
  17. We won't be wondering. We'll know why.
  18. Rusch is a pretty good hitter, no?
  19. Are you being facetious? No. The Cubs don't do that. Never have, never will. If it's not spent this year, it's gone. I don't believe a unit of a major corporation can't look one year ahead to see how money could be most efficiently employed in the long-term. It's the Cubs I guess.
  20. I know it's hard for us mere mortals to conceive, but Soriano would make us worse. No defense, and he would lower the team OBP. Why would I pay anything for that? Either save the money for next year or don't settle for mid-priced outfielders.
  21. It never occurred to me that Walker wasn't one of the three.
