  1. We are never going to back to a time or playoff format with fewer teams and/or no WCs so people need to stop coming up with ideas about having only the 2 "best" teams face each other. That's just silly and will never happen. Honestly, the Cardinals won more games than the Cubs in 2015, but I felt by the end of the season the Cubs were better than the Cardinals and they proved it in the NLDS. Somewhat relevant tangent: Having the best record at the end of a 162 game schedule doesn't necessarily mean you're the best team btw. I can't remember where I found it or read it, but to definitely prove who is the best team in MLB in any season you'd have to play close to 10,000 games! It was either on Fangraphs or fivethirtyeight.com. I can't find the link for the article, but I'll post it when I find it. So, thinking the team with the best record in each league deserves to automatically play in the WS is folly. I definitely think the NLDS should be 7 games like the other series, and I believe the WC teams should probably play a 3 game series (maybe a doubleheader on the first day :-k ). I honestly don't know how to make it more fair, but a 1 game playoff doesn't seem fair or make sense...
  2. You know the more I think about this I'm starting to wonder how many other teams have done these bundle deals and/or other shenanigans to sign international FAs? Honestly, call me naive but I don't think the Cubs did anything shady because we found that weird loophole involving Mexican prospects (only 25% of their signing bonus counts I believe) and we've been exploiting that heavily. Theo is smart enough to avoid doing anything stupid like these bundle deals. Doesn't seem that hard for MLB to get some good forensic accountants to follow the money/bundle deals and see which teams are skirting the rules. Atlanta is going to get penalized really harshly this time around to send a message. Much harder on them than what the Red Sox's penalties were. Sucks to be a Braves fan right now...
  3. I don't really understand the point of doing a mock draft this early, but I guess fans and readers enjoy it. It seems like this draft class is better than previous years and is really rich in pitching prospects. I know J. Callis and some other writers are really high on this upcoming draft class. I know very little about C. Wilcox, but at this very early juncture the guy I really want the Cubs to take is RHP - C. Stewart. That curveball is insane, and I was surprised he went to the Angels at #17.
  4. I have my doubts that MLB is just going to allow a case study in salary suppression by just letting him go through FA. EDIT: As Grant Brisbee illustrated: [tweet] [/tweet] When Boston was penalized a few years ago, their international players became free agents and were allowed to sign with any team as long as the team stayed within the confines of their bonus pool. I imagine if Maitan became a free agent, he'd still be subject to the bonus pools. Yeah, I was just about to write the same thing about the players signed by the Red Sox who then became FAs. They were still subject to the bonus pools. Even if K. Maitan and other players signed by the Braves become FAs I doubt we'll be able to sign them unless they're willing to wait. Man, the timing really sucks for us because we're still in the penalty phase right now, and I suspect we already have some deals in place for next July when we're finally able to spend again.
  5. Good job Carl! I was nervous, but he got out of that jam. Now, it's time for the Epic Comeback and Clinching The Division!
  6. I understand that Maddon is trying to get J. Wilson going, but it's just not going to happen before the playoffs. IT'S NOT HAPPENING JOE!
  7. Yeah. I'm really happy the Cubs drafted him and if his baseball career doesn't work out I wouldn't mind the Cubs organization keeping him around as a coach or mentor for the younger players.
  8. I'd have to look at it again, but definitely Bulls, Hawks, Nets (not tanking per se, but they will suck) and maybe the Suns. The Pacers, Kings and Knicks will also be terrible, but I don't think they're trying to suck on purpose. I think it's a good year to tank since many of those teams that have been tanking for awhile are halfway decent now (76ers and Lakers). This draft only seems to be about 3 or 4 players deep at the very top. My favorite player, and the one I want the Bulls to take if they get the chance, is M. Bagley III.
  9. Gar being fired means nothing if Paxson is still there, IMO. That would be a total lip service/PR move that wouldn't actually mean anything. But yeah, the rest of that sounds about right. Yeah, both Gar and Paxson need to go and probably others in the Bulls FO as well. I don't even know how good their scouts are, or how many they employ. They definitely are lacking in the analytical department and are probably behind the majority of NBA teams there. I'm really hoping when they finally decide to fire GarPax that they try to hire a young exec from either the Spurs and/or Thunder. I wonder if R. Westbrook and P. George both decide to leave OKC next offseason would S. Presti think about leaving as well?
  10. http://mlb.mlb.com/images/3/6/8/254628368/091617_chcstl_baez_taps_ball.gif Hahaha, I totally forgot about that dumb article and that shitty writer on ESPN. I'm shaking my head at how bad that article looks now lol. I mean it was stupid when it first came out, but it looks even worse now. Those Javy gifs are glorious. I think adding Javy gifs to any post makes it 200% better. http://i.imgur.com/nttEAAg.gif
  11. Me too. I can't wait for his tenure with the Cubs to be over. Sucks that down the road whenever I remember the 2016 Cubs that finally won a WS in my lifetime that I'll also have to remember that John horsefeathering Lackey was a part of that team...
  12. Not to sound like a prick, but we should all donate regardless of what Javy does or doesn't do at the plate... The situation in Puerto Rico sounds pretty brutal right now and they might be without power for a few months! It's a really bad situation and I hope they get a ton of relief/charitable donations.
  13. I'm telling you Duke -- Javy is improving at the plate slowly but surely. It also helps that shitty pitchers still challenge him with a fastball for no good reason!
  14. Cubs Win! :flythew: Great win tonight! Glad to see some emotion from KB for once! So, I should have said that first before going on a "Don't Want W. Davis Back" rant lol. I'm glad we have him, but I have very little trust in W. Davis right now. I'm going to the game on Sunday. Hopefully, Quintana is dealing and the Cubs go for the sweep against the brewcrew.
  15. No, we don't dude. I don't want to bring W. Davis back just like I didn't want to bring Chapman back after I saw his performance in the playoffs last year. Honestly, W. Davis will probably get a 4-yr deal for $60-70 million and I want no part of that. No thanks lol. I'm glad we got something useful for Soler. Davis has looked really shaky at times and his velocity isn't really elite anymore. If you're going to sign/trade for an elite closer you have to target the ones trending up. I don't think W. Davis is trending up. Like I wished we had gone after K. Jansen.
  16. I like the way Jake is throwing the ball, but I have little doubt that Hendricks should be the Game 1 starter in the playoffs and that Lester should be the Game 4 starter now. What say you Duke?
  17. Wow. Mike horsefeathering Matheny as a sabermetric savant lol? My take on that horrible idea...
  18. Wrong take bro -- I definitely dispute that comment. He gets plenty of air time on some of his spectacular defensive plays as shown here and in the previous posts.
  19. Breaking Bad and it's not even close. I'll start compiling the best ones now Oh, I totally agree my friend. I mean Parks and Rec has so many great gifs/quotes though. I do hold a special place for Breaking Bad. I'm all on the Breaking Bad gif train if that's what we decide to go with.
  20. So, like after the Cubs win another WS due to the overwhelming success of using Mad Men gifs can we start a poll for which TV show we should use next season? I think Dexter or Breaking Bad or Parks and Rec would be amazing. So many great gifs and famous quotes...
  21. I hope J. Vosler and C. Burks do well in the AFL and raise their profiles with other team's scouts. I'm curious how well regarded they are by other teams. Sometimes these no-name prospects end up having notable careers. It's pretty rare but it happens. Like I never thought J. Harrison would amount to much, but he's been a pretty decent player (13.6 bWAR) for Pittsburgh.
  22. The funny thing is that some of these fans still think their window for contention is "open" or that they have a realistic shot at B. Harper or M. Machado or even S. Otani (they're restricted to $300K just like us) this offseason. They're not getting any FA of that caliber and need to adjust their perspective. I mean they've won 2 WS and been in contention so many horsefeathering years since 2000, but they still complain and whine and bitch as a fanbase. A bunch of ingrates and I think this Mad Men gif perfectly encapsulates their mindset:
  23. Yup, I go there more than I'd like to admit lol. There is this weird fascination with plunking Rizzo because of how close he stands to the plate. Did they ever complain when their shitty players (F. Vina) would just stand there and turn into pitches to get on via HBP? Cards talk is terrible and I know it, but damn if the schadenfreude isn't great. Cards talk is definitely the worst representation of Cardinals fans on the internet. I mean other than the Cardinals fans that post on Breitbart or The Daily Stormer...
  24. I didn't know which "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" gif to go with so I included both... So, I'm not trying to be elitist (honestly) but I thought we got rid of all the meatballs around here lol. Evaluating a player simply on HRs and BA when we have so many better stats? WTH? No, we're not getting rid of Schwarber and I think he'll have a monster season next year. If you want to complain about other players -- fine (plenty of choices). For the life of me, I don't know how you can complain about Schwarber after what he has done these past two postseasons and especially last year in the WS. I don't think we win the WS without his contributions/comeback from a gruesome injury.
  25. I think this binary choice is too limiting. It's also too early to make a judgement call on this trade. We don't know what Candelario/Paredes will do or how impactful they'll be down the road. I think Avila could be a vital player for us in the playoffs. That said, J. Wilson sucks and I have no confidence in him. It's early, but this trade doesn't look great right now...
