  4. I'm rather surprised that SSR of all people would dole out Loria comps so nonchalantly.
  5. Flipping through channels, I paused on the Sox/Tigers game. It was a 6-0 Tigers rout in the 4th, and Porcello had just struck out Dunn. It was Porcello's 2nd K of the evening, or as Hawk put it, "Strikeout... number 2... fer... someone...". He then went on to tell a story about playing hockey with Bobby Orr.
  6. I must have missed something; what the hell was Logan Schafer so pissed off about after that ground out?
  7. Dude sure knows how to pick things up after an 0-4 night.
  8. Career .542 OPS. Is this a joke I just don't get?
  9. Paul Sullivan is going to need to find a new player's wife to creepily retweet.
  10. When is Sweeney due to return? Weird. Wonder what is coming back.

    Castro

I sometimes wonder if Castro is putting too much pressure on himself to live up to his extension and be a "cornerstone" player. I think back to the Joakim Noah situation in 2012. I don't know. I'm beside myself with Castro this season. I find myself grasping at any available rationalization in hope of refuting the growing sense that he just isn't any good.
  12. Encouraging. In that vein, early indications are optimistic with respect to Ks: 33.9 K% July, 20.6% K% thus far in August. Also, yesterday's Baez HR. Clip includes a look at his swing from the first base side. Seconds 43-45 should probably be a GIF.
  13. What exactly did he "tear down"? Jim Hendry's bloated, 71-win colossus? And what else was he (or anyone else) supposed to do "without a lot of money" upon inheriting a shitty roster worth over $125 million? I think most in baseball would acknowledge that rebuilding a terribly run organization (from the minors on up) with limited resources is a difficult thing to do. I also think that given those initial conditions/constraints, most would recognize that Theo and Co. have managed to leverage what resources they had in an efficient manner.
  14. I think PitchFX would then be bound by 3rd Law of Robotics to preserve itself from harm, which would further complicate implementation of the system.
  15. Maybe I'm overestimating how long the whole process would take, but anything more than a second would seem like a lot compared to how it is now. I'm very confident that the calculation and transmission of data would be, for all intents and purposes, instantaneous.
  16. Both the QuesTec and the Sportvision camera setups have a stated measurement error (with proper calibration) of 0.5 inches. Calibration is an issue, although I imagine that if these systems were to be used by MLB to actually call balls and strikes, then a more rigorous and universal calibration protocol would be put in place. I recall a baseball prospectus article addressing these calibration uncertainties from a few years back, I'll see if I can dig it up. With respect to whether or not the calls could be delivered instantaneously, computers are very good at performing newtonian dynamics calculations, particularly for an object sample of 1 ball per measurement. Time would not be an issue.
  17. No kidding. Available technologies allow the average fan to ascertain (in real time!) the routine manner in which umpires miss ball/strike calls. Is baseball not sufficiently embarrassed by this?
  18. You forgot Anibal Sanchez, Liriano & Puig. Heck, just replace Jackson with Sanchez, Feldman with Liriano and Soler with Puig. Don't sign Baker. There's less than $10M additional cash outlay, no additional impact from a prospect/organization perspective and the team is significantly better. Add a competent bullpen and that team is very, very competitive. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I don't mean this facetiously), but weren't they pretty heavily in on all three of those guys? Our FO can't just kidnap FA.
  19. Baez K% and BB% for August (13 games) are 20% (29% for the season) and 7% (8% for the season) respectively.
  20. Dialed-in Sori is a thing to behold. Godspeed, old boy.
  21. Hits his SL leading 35th double.
