  1. Bryant OPSing under .450 for the month and out tonight. Is he hurt again?
  2. Heading into tonight’s game the Cubs were BABIPing .218 in June. And that number didn’t go up tonight. Easily the worst in MLB by more than .040 lower than the second worse team, StL. What to make of that? Team-wide bad luck?
  3. Mike Florio on WSCR made a great point that I hadn’t thought of before…. The estate taxes due on the Bears when Virginia passes will be astronomical, which is why he thinks the Bears will be sold in the next 5-10 years.
  4. Similar to 2019 when Luccroy, Davis and Maldonado went 13-82.
  5. check out his game log, he's been mostly himself for a while now Now 7-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 52 innings over his last 8 starts.
  6. I should probably be less surprised than I am. He’s been solid at the AAA level for awhile (.808 OPS over 5 seasons) and was also solid in his only extended MLB stretch with the Cardinals in 2018 (.882 OPS over 58 PA).
  7. D-Backs may be even worse. Lost 21 of their last 24 after a 15-13 start. ETA - Rockies have lost 20 of their last 30, with 6 of those 10 wins coming against the D-Backs.
  8. At least it’s not his throwing shoulder. But yes, he’s out for a while.
  9. Ron Coomer just went off on ball doctoring after pitch to Pederson. “Why doesn’t the umpire look at the ball? We all know what’s happening. Everybody complaining about lack of offense, but nobody doing anything.”
  10. Luda was born in the 217!
  11. I think Boog has a more professional delivery than Len did, but personality-wise is much more of a goofball. I think it’s taken a bit of time for JD’s far more dry sense of humor to mesh with Boog, but I think they’re getting there. A good example of their improving chemistry is when Boog was trying to say that one of the opposing players looked like someone famous and JD clearly had no clue who Boog was referencing. Instead of clamming up like he did earlier in the season, JD quipped, “Yeah, he looks just like my cousin,” and Boog spent the rest of the half inning cracking up. I also think Boog makes pretty good use of Dempster, Sut, etc. by occasionally asking them some pretty incisive questions. Keeps them from babbling inanely and instead makes them talk about something interesting. Last night Dempster was being dead weight. Out of nowhere Boog asked Dempster about borrowing a position player’s bat and we got an entertaining story about Cliff Floyd taking his bat back from Dempster after Dempster got a hit with it.
  12. Why Bote over Duffy? Just a day off?
  13. Oh, I was just responding to the original post that was seemingly making it sound like it's really weird/nuts/whatever that Gooden could be a great-grandfather at 56. I find it extremely weird he is only 56. Seems like forever since he was owning the league in the mid 1980's With all that has happened in baseball since, it seems eons ago Trivia that is probably true: Dwight Gooden and Albert Pujols are the same age.
  14. Rex Grossman was the right move in 2003. It was a 1 QB draft (Carson Palmer). There wasn’t much difference between Grossman, Leftwich and Boller. The Bears traded down, got the last man standing and the one year he was healthy, the Bears went to the Super Bowl. Where the Bears messed up is that with their other first round pick in that draft, they took Michael Haynes... Instead of Troy Polamalu.
  15. I’m ambivalent about this. I’m glad they moved up to get their guy and didn’t reach to get the last guy remaining. I don’t like giving up the first rounder next year. And I don’t like that Pace and Nagy have all sorts of incentive to start Fields before he’s ready and before they’ve had a chance to build any support around him. It feels to me like Fields is being set up to fail here, pushed to start too soon with a bad offensive line and not enough weapons around him. I’d feel much better about this if this were the first year of the coach/GM regime and not (likely) the last.
  16. I think trading a bunch of picks in order to move up and take the fifth best qb in the draft is a horrible idea. If someone falls into the teens and the Bears trade a couple picks to move up a few spots to get him, fine. I still think there’s a very strong chance the Bears starting QB in 2022 won’t be on the roster when they break camp in Bourbonnais in August, and unless someone falls into their laps, that might not be the worst result, long term.
  17. 8th time in 23 games the Cubs have 4 or fewer hits and 10 or more Ks in a game.
  18. In honor of Shock G, I am liking the way the Cubs swing.
  19. I’m tired of watching Baez take these unprofessional at bats.
  20. So the Cubs finally have their Addison Russell replacement.
  21. It comes down to this for me... Theo declared the offense "broken" nearly 30 months ago and they still have 7 of the 11 top players by Plate Appearances from 2018 on the team. They switched out Schwarber for his statistical clone in Pederson. And they switched out Zobrist, Russell and Almora for the far less talented trio of Sogard, Marsinick and Duffy. And they still have the same hitting coach. This is basically the same group of players that has gone through bizarre extended offensive droughts in each of the previous three seasons, including scoring 1 or 0 runs in 10 of the last 21 games last season. Why are they expecting an improved result?
  22. They’ve had a grand total of 1 inning where they’ve scored more than 2 runs.
  23. On WSCR this morning, they said the Cubs hit total over the first ten games was the lowest total over a 10-game stretch since at least 1901. So, 0 or 1 hit sets a new 10-game mark. 2 would tie and give them a shot at a new record tomorrow. They’re a third of the way to history.
