  1. Uhm... That's not capitalism. That's the opposite of capitalism. That's why baseball needs the Federal anti-trust exemption in order to get away with it. When Tech companies - Apple, Google, Intel and others - got together and tried to suppress wages, they got sued by the Federal government and later settled a class action lawsuit with $435MM in damages to the companies' employees.
  2. Do the statheads on this site prefer fSWAG or bSWAG?
  3. Effingham also has a fantastic record store called America’s Groove. It’s in the middle of an otherwise abandoned shopping mall. It’s surreal it’s like you’re in the middle of a post-apocalyptic zombie movie and then suddenly transported to a John Cusack movie.
  4. Went to Parkland College. A Champaign kid!!!
  5. I would much rather have Yu at his remaining 4 year $81MM contract than Wheeler at 5 and $118MM.
  6. It would be adding a CF and trading Schwarber (or somehow Heyward) that would do it.
  7. I'm on a University of Illinois message board - cleverly disguising myself by using the exact same user name - and there's one guy who is talking about how great it is that Kendrick Nunn (former U of I basketball player, kicked off the team after pleading guilty to domestic battery) is getting a shot in the NBA, while simultaneously saying in a different thread that Kaepernick should never be in the NFL again. Sample size of one I know, but those people are out there.
  8. I was a little surprised the Twins QO’d Odorizzi. He’s smart to take it. He’ll make more this year than he would have during the first year of any multi-year, and then he’ll be able to get more as a free agent next year with no draft pick attached assuming he’s basically same pitcher in 2020 that he’s been for the last 5 or 6 years.
  9. Quirky, swaggy Yu is the best Yu.
  10. I had to check... Gutierrez, Harris and Ward were never actually Cubs teammates. I could have sworn otherwise.
  11. I don't think he's going to get a second bite. But no GM (whether Pace or someone else) is going to get a chance to draft a franchise QB for the Bears in 2020 because there aren't the draft picks there to do it. I think the Bears are going to give Pace 2020 to prove to them that he deserves a chance to make the next first round draft pick for the Bears in 2021. No real point in bringing in a different GM when that GM is going to be completely hamstrung by the lack of picks. NFL teams don't tend to hold a fire sale for draft picks, but I'd think the Bears would be awfully tempted to give it a shot. Even if you're only getting 5th and 6th round picks, if you stock pile a few, you might be able to trade back up into the 2nd or 3rd round.
  12. I didn’t realize that Nats-Astros was only the second expansion team vs expansion team World Series and that the first one was only as recent as Royals-Mets in 2015. That seems pretty crazy but speaks to how little post-season success some of the expansion franchises have had.
  13. I wonder if David Ross is the choice, why they haven’t announced it yet. Yesterday would have been the perfect day to do it with the playoff game postponed. It wouldn’t have overshadowed a game. I suppose it could just be a contract negotiation thing. But the longer this drags out, the more it looks like Espada is the choice.
  14. My grandparents lived in Arizona my entire childhood until they passed while I was in college. We visited them every summer and often on X-Mas break. We went hiking all the time. My grandpa’s property backed up to a big stretch of state park and we’d go quartz hunting. He eventually had a whole garden lined with quartz. That entire time, I never once saw a scorpion. Maybe we were just in the wrong part of the state. And I have a ton of experience with real estate disputes. I absolutely guarantee that the landlord’s complaints are trumped up so that he doesn’t have to pay the security deposit back. That’s pretty much SOP for some (scummy) landlords - don’t return the deposit, if anyone complains, counter with an exaggerated list of damage to the property.
  15. To clarify, we never meant to impute any type of competence to Dave Roberts' managerial abilities. TT Inc apologizes for the error and the person responsible has been sacked. Did Roberts just Grady Little himself out of a job?
  16. Football and basketball hide their minor leagues in the colleges. Given a choice between the two, the NCAA makes minor league baseball look humane and well thought out.
  17. How much would a Jake Odorizzi/Wade Miley/Ivan Nova/Tanner Roark type really cost for a couple years? 2 years, $25MM? I’m frankly more concerned with Lester than I am with the Chatwood/Mills/Alzolay slot. Over the last three seasons he’s gone through stretches where he just didn’t have it. And with several years in a row now of declining results, I’m afraid the eye-test might be more predictive of Quintana’s next season than fWAR. There’s a bit of an Edwin Jackson c. 2014 thing going on here, where the stuff and the peripherals aren’t adding up to the expected results. At some point, you’re not getting BABIP’ed to death because of bad luck - You’re getting BABIP’ed to death because it’s easy to get hits off you. I think constructing the 2020 pitching staff around the assumption that Quintana and Lester - and Kimbrel for that matter - are all going to bounce back is a big mistake. I’d like to have someone else around who can get 150 innings just in case and then be a bridge to the future after Lester, Quintana and Chatwood are all gone after 2020.
  18. What a horsefeathers city to be in to find out you’re canned. There’s a shot bar on Laclede’s Landing within stumbling distance to the casino. Seems as good a place as any.
  19. Your current 2020 bullpen pitchers under contract... Kimbrel, Ryan, and Wick. Whichever of Chatwood or Mills that isn't starting. Probably picking up Phelps' option. Then about 250-ish combined innings from some assortment of Webster, Maples, Wieck, Underwood, Norwood and random other AAA guys I'm forgetting. Woof! Bare minimum the Cubs need two more capable relievers. Preferably one from each side of the mound, at least one of whom is a proven high leverage guy. Can the Cubs afford to spend any money on the relief staff this off-season with all the other needs to be filled? Can they afford not to?
  20. Zobrist and Happ having lost years certainly hurt in this regard. Although you can certainly point out that the way Happ has been handled has been ridiculous and that the Cubs shouldn’t have been counting so much on a 38 year old middle infielder in the first place. We can go to the off-season threads and see plenty of people posting about the need for a center fielder and some middle infield depth. Descalso was supposed to the be the latter, and the Cubs basically ignored the need for the former. Overall, it shows that while the top end of the Cubs roster is as good as anyone’s the bottom end has eroded and can’t provide eniugh value over a 162 game schedule.
  21. Betances was going to be the top free agent reliever on the market this off season until these injuries. Now, he might not even get a contract offer until he can show he's healthy.
  22. A picture of Mel Hall and one of his victims at the victim's high school prom appeared in the Yankee's 1991 yearbook, per this story...https://www.sbnation.com/2014/7/15/5883593/the-many-crimes-of-mel-hall So, yeah.
  23. “Caratini” sounds like a horrible drink at a vegan hipster gastropub.
  24. They wish. Who is their Yelich? Paul [expletive] DeJonge? HA! Flaherty has a 0.85 ERA since the ASB. He’s their Yelich.
