You've been struggling to get runners on all game, you have a chance to take the lead, your starter hasn't looked that good and you have 3 guys in the pen who can give you at least 2 shut down innings? Dempster had looked good since the first inning. Come on, you don't take an ace-caliber pitcher out of a tie game in the 5th inning when he has at least one more inning in him. If it was the 7th or 8th inning maybe. Why? Shouldn't you give yourself the best chance at winning? If it was the 2nd or 3rd it's one thing, but it's getting late in the 5th, and with Hamels on the mound, there's a great chance you won't have a runner in scoring position the rest of the game. You've got to take the chance there. But instead we left him in, he gave up 3, and threw 34 more pitches. How much better of a chance did Cedeno have of getting the run in than Dempster? Better, but I still don't like the odds of it happening. Since Wood is unavailable, you were trading an inning of Dempster for an inning of somebody like Howry for a slighlty larger chance of getting one run that probably wouldn't win the game anyways.
