  1. Is Negron still in the Cubs organization? I thought I read he was released or signed elsewhere as a FA. Maybe I was thinking of someone else... Looks like you're right. Now it comes out that Miguel signed a minor league contract witht he Cardinals and has an NRI to spring training.
  2. They become free agents. Word is the Cubs have re-signed Harben to a minor-league deal. I would expect the same for Reyes. I'm surprised Buck Coats didn't meet the same fate.
  3. Remember that huge hit Patrick Cowan took from Ray Maualuga towards the end of the USC-UCLA game? According to the Daily Bruin and the LA Times, Cowan got a concussion from that hit - he only recognized the post-concussion symptoms about 3 days after the game. As of now, Ben Olson is the starter against Florida State and redshirt freshman Osaar Rashaan is his backup - Cowan has until early next week to get cleared for practice or he won't play in the Emerald Bowl.
  4. Career records aren't the best of things to look at in terms of a pro prospect. Both Quinn and Palmer didn't play with that many playmakers at other skill positions and Quinn hasn't played with a good defense. And, of course, Carson Palmer was coached by Norm Chow for just the last two seasons...and really had one good year at USC - his senior season. Looking at stats isn't the best idea - gotta look at the overall picture. Being able to run a pro offense was good for Carson and it will be good for Brady at the next step. Brady doesn't have the arm strength that Carson did, I think their accuracy is about equal. When coming out of college, Carson was a better prospect than Quinn will be. But in this era where franchise QBs are king, no way Brady Quinn shouldn't go with the top pick. I was just responding to BigSlick's post that Quinn might end up busting because he "can't come through in big games". Of course, I don't consider 22/45, 330 yards, 3 TD, 0 INTs, and 70 rushing yards (his USC stats) when your team is letting you down repeatedly with dropped balls and no blocking "not coming through", but that's another thread. And I agree with you on that point. That was my point in mr first paragraph.

  6. That's awesome. I had to follow Euro 2004 online so being able to watch the next one is excellent. Euro 2004 was an amazing storyline to follow and extremely frustrating it wasn't available on U.S. television. I still can't believe Greece won. My co-worker is Greek and has pics of it all over his cubicle. He was going to school at Cal at the time and told us how he called in sick to his internship and had to go to some obscure bar in San Francisco proper because they were the only place within 25 miles carrying the game.
  7. Harben works too. The A's non-tendered Jerome Williams.
  8. That's my guess as well. Surprised Buck Coats didn't join Jose.
  9. Culiacan lost 12-3, box: 3B C. McGehee 3/4, R, HR (7), 2 RBI (33), CS (2) Overall: 63/199, .317/.382/.467/.849, 7 HR, 9 2B, 21 BB, 23 K, 1/3 SB, 10 E
  10. Only problem is Licey has played all night games - he should be most sober during the game if he went out partying all night.
  11. http://www.jaguars.com/story/images/240x180/story(5715)240x180.jpg :)
  12. I just merged your thread in here. I definitely think Tabata and Martinez are top-50 prospects and don't think Veal is top-50. Also, Clayton Kershaw - who only pitched in a rookie league last season - certainly belongs on the top-50 list.
  13. You are wise beyond your years.
  14. I agree that Nolasco and Marshall posted similar seasons last season but Nolasco has a higher ceiling and is likely to have a better career (and I'm not one of those people who quickly soured on Marshall).
  15. Neither Felix Pie or Jose Reyes played in Licey's 7-6 win over Orientales today.
  16. So the eluniversal site apparently lies, the VWL season goes on: Tigres lose 2-1, box: SS R. Cedeño 0/1, R, RBI, 3 BB  Leones lose 6-4, box: C H. Blanco 0/3 Overall: Ronny Cedeño (Tigres): 21/94, .223/.305/.309/.614, 1 HBP, 10 BB, 22 K, 2 HR, 1 2B, 0/2 SB, 2 E Henry Blanco (Leones): 31/144, .215/.298/.313/.611, 1 HBP, 16 BB, 21 K, 3 HR, 5 2B, 2/3 SB ------------- Angel Guzman (Navegantes): 9 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 9 K/0 BB, 1 HR, 3.00 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, 7 GO-10 FO
  17. so is blanton and harden and probably everyone else on the team Too bad we don't have anything Beane would want. I'd love to have Haren, Harden or Blanton on the Cubs. I can see Beane liking Murton (good player, good patience, cheap for a while yet), if not others. I cant see Hendry trading Murton. I like Murton as much as the next guy, but if you can get Haren for him & a prospect, I think you have to do it. Not exactly sure why Beane would do that trade.
  18. Excellent article. There's no doubt that the other playoff-caliber teams in the league will destroy the Bears if he repeats his performance against one of them, but he's also the type who can get hot and compensate for a lagging defense should it be called for. I'm nowhere near as optimistic now of the Bears winning it all as I was after 5 or 7 weeks, but I still wouldn't be surprised to see it. The thing about this article that surprised me the most was the mention of Hester as a possible rookie of the year. Would a huge year of special teams be enough to snag it from some of the others? Hopefully he pads his season with another return or two, and then shows up on offense in the remaining three tune-up games. With Grossman's propensity to go deep, teams would have to respect the deep threat with Hester lining up, so if nothing else, checking down would be a gift first down, and once in a while take a shot for shots and giggles. I'm thinking Hester might be more useful on screens and reverses than actually going deep. If anything, Berrian and Bradley stretch the field out and we go to Hester on that checkdown for who knows how many yards. Agree with everything else. Exactly. I can easily see Hestern on a reverse/end around. Man, I loved those two screens the Bears ran yesterday.
  19. Just drop Coats and Reyes from the 40-man so you can add two of them.
  20. double ouch. :? The good news is that they came out of that worse than we did. I'd rather have lost Nolasco than Haren or Hirsch. Agreed. Plus the Cubs got a sandwich pick after all that.
  21. Hrm, wolf's avatar got me thinking. Over the last three offseasons, NL Central teams have traded Haren, Nolasco and Hirsch for Mulder, Pierre and Jennings. Ouch.
  22. Good call! Tim Wilken on Around the Minors (start at about 5:30).
  23. The wild card could be Adrian Peterson, but yeah, I tend to agree. Seems to me that if the top 3 picks go to Detroit, Oakland and Tampa, then you've got three teams that don't really need a RB picking first. Then at 4-9 you've got Washington and Arizona, who won't be picking RBs; Cleveland, who probably would pick Peterson, and Houston, who SHOULD pick Peterson - but they're so incompetent that they might not. He seemed like a great fit for Green Bay, but with the win last week and another likely win this week against Detroit, they might have to "settle" for a guy like Marshawn Lynch. Heh, I wasn't even looking at what teams might be in the top 3...I was talking more along the lines of talent. Peterson has to do a lot between now and the draft to be a top-5 pick (show he's healthy, etc.), but he certainly belongs in a discussion with guys like Quinn, Thomas and Johnson.
