As a kid, I originally called myself a Sox fan, but that was before I had any real interest in sports. I just knew they were good. I'll admit the same. I watched the 93-95 Sox as much as I watched the Cubs and idolized Frank Thomas, who is still one of my favorite players despite the White Sox uniform. At the end of 1995 though the .500ish Cubs went on a winning streak toward the end of the season and were alive for the WC on the last weekend, I went to 2 of games of that final series vs. Houston and for some reason that pushed me over the edge for the Cubs. By 97, I was at the Cell for the first Cubs/Sox series rooting hard for the Cubs. I've told this story before...the extent of my Sox "fandom" was that I had a Sox hat in the early-mid 90s, but I didn't watch at all. Jordan's comeback in March of 95 is what got me really amped up for sports and then the Cubs decent 95 season that immediately followed, plus the Bears with the "big" offense with Conway and Graham and I was in (pretty funny since all those teams were pretty damn mediocre). Then as the 95-96 Bulls happened, I was officially all in on sports. I also always played as the Cowboys in tecmo bowl (which I played despite not giving a crap about sports) and called myself a fan prior to the Bears.
