  1. i was just trying to remember where someone said they'd still trade bryant for trout (which, to be fair, could still turn out to very right) and went back into that trout trade thread and saw where a few were saying they'd take harper over trout. but yeah, THIS year, bryant is trout-esque so far and only a hair behind him, much cheaper going forward, and a year younger.
  2. my god his numbers are just beautiful right now. that slash line
  3. KB is officially a 7 win player
  4. It was dumb but at least alternating was fair and that's likely why no one raised a fuss before. My gripe is that the ASG should be 100% about the players and not about the outcome of the game. How was it fair? A given year's league champion had no control over whether they were good in an odd year or even year. Just because the selection alternates evenly doesn't really make it fair in any practical sense. At least, with the current system, that team would have something resembling a fifty fifty chance in any given year. Materially, though, it's not much of a difference either way.
  5. well, this is funny timing [tweet] [/tweet]
  6. i guess the main thing that bothers me about the uproar over the all star game HFA thing is that i don't remember there being any uproar before, when something somehow even dumber (even/odd year) determined it. it's not that i disagree that it's dumb. it's that it's always been dumb and nobody seemed to care or notice before.
  7. i mean it's pretty awful for a chicago team not to do it once in like 40 years, 15 or so of which included divisional play. plenty of other franchises had runs of extended success in those eras. the cubs couldn't even manage one season, and it's not like it was bad luck. it was due to neglectful and incompetent ownership. But you needed to be best in the league through '69 to make the "playoffs" and the late 60's early 70's Cubs were relatively good. true but still only like half as many teams through the first several years of that and they were awful through most of it.
  8. all of which happened since 1984 there's very little astonishing about not making the playoffs for roughly the first half of that 70, when making the playoffs was really hard. i mean it's pretty awful for a chicago team not to do it once in like 40 years, 15 or so of which included divisional play. plenty of other franchises had runs of extended success in those eras. the cubs couldn't even manage one season, and it's not like it was bad luck. it was due to neglectful and incompetent ownership.
  9. yeah he has to show he can hit righties at all before it's even a consideration
  10. 08 was easily more painful than 07, especially coming off of 07. Yeah, 2007 was more of a pleasant surprise than anything else; 2008 felt like they were just going to steamroll through and I spent the weeks before the playoffs raging at people acting like the Cubs were doomed. I was more mad at the team than anything else for vindicating those dumb, terrified meatballs. not only did that team not win a game after steamrolling through the regular season, but they barely even showed a pulse at any point. game 1 for a little bit and that was it.
  11. Yeah I remember we were all like 'LOL look at that run differential, we are going to clown these fools in the playof- what the hell we just got swept' 2003 was painful for obvious reasons, but I think 2007 was a little more soul-crushing, personally. 08 was easily more painful than 07, especially coming off of 07.
  12. all of which happened since 1984
  13. A magic number for an American League team is completely worthless because we need the All Star game to mean something. It still would've been worthless before the All Star game "meant" anything.
  14. fair enough but last year's beating was so epic and perfectly beautiful from every standpoint that it can't possibly be topped. i guess if it turned into a 90's bulls/knicks thing, that could be fun, though.
  15. are you considering skokie and lincolnwood as "west burbs?!" anyway, the sandwiches are fine. can be hit or miss. i've definitely had better, but that's usually been in florida. Nooooo, I'm saying there's nothing here in the West Burbs. I have family in Skokie I visit probably once a month so I'd stop down there next time if it was worth going. ah, gotcha. well they just opened a 90 miles cafe at lincolnwood town center that is supposed to be pretty good. i get most of my fill of cuban food at my mom's, so i don't go to those places that much.

  17. nah. we have much more to lose than they do. they'd come in with low expectations if they got there. house money. we're very probably going to lose in the playoffs. i just hope it isn't in the first round and not to them because horsefeathers them. i don't want to see kolten wong having anything to celebrate. him and neck tattoo. horsefeathers em.
  18. think he'll suffer from the "they're too talented" angle i have heard chatter on roberts because of what the dodgers have dealt with
  19. so this is kinda weird. there's a place near skokie (where i grew up) - i think it's actually in lincolnwood - where i go to pick up cuban sandwiches from time to time called taste of cuba. well the dude who has rung me up most times is hanging out in LA with georgie https://www.instagram.com/p/BJjP-6kjZQ6/?taken-by=jorgesoler68 (he's tagged as taste of cuba something or other so that's how i recognized him)
  20. i'm not sure if it actually is or not, but this is the first game in a while i've noticed we haven't been favored in on 538 sports's win probability thingy...dodgers 53% chance of winning.
  21. think that was um's attempt at poking fun at it, not that he literally couldn't articulate what the video was...
  22. Why? Yeah, I was gonna say, for me I'm a little pessimistic about him starting, but feel like I shouldn't be. That and we are going up against Bud Norris.
  23. Does heyward catch that
  24. he's swole af. definitely not fat.
