  1. I dunno, in the last couple weeks at softball I've had an infield fly come up twice while on the bases and my instinct was immediately to find an umpire to determine if it was being called. Tapia's an international signing with less than 700 pro games to his credit, maybe he just hasn't found himself in that situation very often or the instinct to use his speed was stronger.
  2. That's like the 6th ball that was caught because of the wind
  3. There's probably some truth to this, but he's averaging a shade under 5 IP per start(meaning he's basically never seeing a lineup for the 3rd time) and he's got a 4 ERA with peripherals slightly worse than that. Doesn't seem like he's setting much of a bar that any number of pitchers couldn't reach.
  4. If your stuff doesn't dance enough to strike out AAA hitters, then MLB hitters are going to have more success at punishing it when you inevitably aren't flawless with location. Butler is the same guy he was prior to 2017.
  5. His current BB% is just under 10 and if it stays under 10 then I don't think that's a problem. His K%-BB% is a smidge over 10, he'd be a healthier prospect around 15, and it's more likely that he'll add back some K's than it is that he drops to career best walk prevention.
  6. Didn't they weirdly have that stick out last year (and not just in the "well, we get a ton of guys on base so we leave a ton of guys on base"-way), too? Or was that 2015? It was 2015(recall the hand wringing about high K guys against the power pitchers/Mets), and they were much better in 2016, the Verducci book talks about how they had an increased emphasis on 'B-hacking', a shorter swing with 2 strikes that cut out some K's and made them less prone to killed rallies. Hard to say if they lost that emphasis, it's statistical noise(even 60 games isn't a ton for this stuff to even out), or if pitchers have a new/better way of attacking some of those hitters.
  7. I'm saying the Brewers suck and that they'll be falling out of the race quickly. Duke TT Tim That's some heavy hitters saying the Crew suck and will be out of this race. I like it, even though it's wrong. To be clear I'm not saying the Brewers are going to fall out of the race, there's a whole lot of games in the NL(especially in the Central) that somebody has to win. But any Cubs pessimism has to be tempered by the fact that their primary opposition for the division is a team with a solid offense that is probably owed some regression, and a mediocre pitching staff that is absolutely due for regression. In other words, if the Cubs start playing like they're capable of, they will fulfill Duke's prophesy and have a boring last couple weeks in September. Even if Russell goes to jail and Schwarber and Arrieta never break out of their funk and any acquisition isn't a game changer, they're still favored to win the division by several games.
  8. The Brewers rotation currently has Jimmy Nelson and Chase Anderson pitching at a 5 win pace, Matt Garza pitching decently(he's already gotten hurt), and Davies/Peralta both pitching poorly. So if you think Jimmy Nelson and Chase Anderson are aces(you will get incredible odds on this if you're a betting man), then yes, the Brewers rotation is rock solid. If you think that Nelson is going to fade like he did last year(a year ago today his ERA was identical to this year) and Anderson hasn't magically discovered a way to keep half as many fly balls from going over the fence, then their rotation is decidedly mediocre at best.

  10. Lloris just gave away a qualifier by trying to make a play in his own end with 20 seconds left in a tie game. [tweet] [/tweet] EDIT: This moves Sweden into first in that group with 4 matches to go in their hex. 1st place qualifies, 2nd place probably moves into a playoff round, and 3rd place goes home, and this group also includes the Dutch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%E2%80%93_UEFA_Group_A
  11. If they lose this game, they'll be all of 3 wins off a 90 win pace. 5 wins off a 95 win pace. We've been spoiled by the super Cubs starting with Schwarber's arrival in 2015, but they're still in a spot where one streak puts them right back on track. Also, the schedule is about to break. After Sunday, 21 of the 26 games until the All-Star break are against teams below .500. The 5 are a 4 game series against the Nationals and the Brewers rainout makeup.
  12. He's thrown a max of 52 pitches in an outing this year and he's on 3 days rest, so it's tough to expect more today. It sounds like the plan is to basically do a piggyback with Frankoff so they're probably not anticipating needing a 3rd pitcher until the 7th/8th.
  13. If that's it for Montgomery then it's a decent first outing. Need to make about 1 more pitch next time to avoid one of those baserunners(preferably the HR), and nice to see 5 K in 4 IP
  14. They shuffled around some assistant coaches and DFA'd Peralta.
  15. Hendricks is on the DL with hand tendinitis or something like that
  16. I assume that's related to the Pride Night they're going to have.
  17. I don't know if I've ever seen two USMNT players run at defenses in the same game at a level like Pulisic and Nagbe did last night. Middling/expected result aside, that plus Villafana's emergence(and what that means for Fab's position) made me pretty excited about the future. And yeah, I was hoping that Dempsey would have more success with a true hold up forward(I forget what number that's supposed to be) instead of Morris, and he had a good workrate, but it seemed like he was adding to the congestion, especially with T&T parking the bus. Probably less of a problem against Mexico, but I wonder if Altidore and Wood on the same front line would be better against the CONCACAF minnows.
  18. Mekkes K'd all 5 batters he faced, please move him up #Mekkeswatch
  19. if you added up the hit probabilities of the 4 consecutive hits starting at Chatwood, it would combine for like 60% So what, so the pitchers are all creative at finding ways to have prolapsed anus starts, whoopedee-dooooooooooo. you seem like you're having a good day
