  1. Can't argue that. But, that way of thinking restricts you to taking college hitters too, which are super sparse, at this point in the draft. If your goal is to replenish prospects in full season ball. Most of what left at this exact point are positionless guys or all glove, no bat types. You've got Amaya, Ademan, maybe Gutierrez and/or Sierra coming up behind our current full season crop too. Its not ideal, but having the young group of position guys in the majors certainly makes it palatable. Ideally, Gonzalez falls to us in the 3rd, but I don't really see it. Most of the HS over slot types are pitchers, maybe Garrett Mitchell doesn't have an insane asking price.....Surely Allen does or he'd be gone. The idea isn't that they need to fill out full season lineups, but that there's an imbalance in the low levels. Sure there's IFA guys who will filter in, but that's always going to happen and they sign IFA pitchers too. HS hitters may be harder to come by because of bonus issues though, in which case, I'm more than okay with several college hitters.
  2. I would very much like to see them take a couple hitters, and relatively quickly. Right now there's like one and a half position player prospects below AAA worth paying attention to, while we're out of rotation spots at Myrtle Beach. Sure AAA has 3-4 hitters of note if you include Happ and pitching has to be done in volume, but look through the lineups in Tennessee, Myrtle Beach, and South Bend. You've got Eloy, Burks(only breaking out this year), and maybe Paredes, it's kinda dire.
  3. can't hit into a double play if no one gets on base http://i1.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/022/138/reece.JPG
  4. why don't they just make the whole plane out of double plays
  5. Lackey started the year with 2 quality starts(one of them just barely, 4 R/3 ER in 6 IP). Just one in 11 starts since.
  6. Cubs with 100+ PA and their wOBA compared to their ZiPS projections: Almora +11 (.300 projected v. .311 actual) Jay +35 *approximate, I found a ZiPS slash line but no wOBA Baez -16 Contreras -30 Heyward -17 Russell -37 Zobrist -24 Schwarber -61 Bryant +15 Rizzo -21
  7. for his next trick, Heyward's gonna get on base by banking the ball off an umpire
  8. The Workloads of 2017's Top Draft Prospects Canning comes out of this looking most worrisome, with honorable mention to Lange and Houck.
  9. This is interesting, from 538: College pitchers have not been such a good value in the Top 100 picks recently. College hitters remain awesome though, all hail college hitters.
  10. so Amaya is confirmed Panamanian Buster Posey, I'm on board
  11. I have no context for EXST stats. How have people hit there in the past, like Eloy, or Starlin?
  12. This probably won't end up mattering but only because of the order of the games. Mexico plays Panama at home next so they're trying in that game regardless of opponent. Next is Costa Rica on the road (same thing as Panama). Third is T&T at home. They're in last so we probably don't have to worry about them. Assuming Mexico wins the two home games, they'll have qualified before their last game in Honduras. And if losing to Honduras will hurt our chances of getting third/fourth, you know they'll put a second team out there even if it costs them top spot in the Hex. That would be enough though. Panama and CR both have to go to Mexico and the US, plus play each other. If the US and Mexico take care of their home games there won't be enough points to go around to risk the US dropping to 4th.
  13. Ream is terrible
  14. Arriola seems like a decision by running out of alternatives. Nagbe maybe can't go 90, Clint looked bad 4 days ago and also needs minutes managed, Morris is in crap form, and Altidore is maybe a bit tired plus maybe a poor pairing with Wood? I dunno.
  15. Confirmed. [tweet] [/tweet] Apparently Villafana and Bedoya have knocks, and Arena said there needed to be rotation with 2 games at elevation in 4 days, but still.
  16. a rumored lineup for tonight, which, uh [tweet] [/tweet]
  17. of all the pitches to freak out and get yourself ejected, especially with the wide zone being called all game
  18. His ability to systematically remove weaknesses in his game is almost as fun as the production that comes from it.
  19. I dunno, in the last couple weeks at softball I've had an infield fly come up twice while on the bases and my instinct was immediately to find an umpire to determine if it was being called. Tapia's an international signing with less than 700 pro games to his credit, maybe he just hasn't found himself in that situation very often or the instinct to use his speed was stronger. yeah, that's fair. plus this if far more entertaining than actually watching the cubs. infield fly hitting the ground is pretty much never executed (or happens if it's by accident) so I can understand players kind of relying on extincts on that particular rule. I'm just mad bc the cubs will be under .500 again and was being somewhat cruel. It's an interesting thought, sometimes you see arguments about international players having a lower baseball IQ, and I've never really thought about it as specifically as the idea that they never/rarely played organized baseball in a low talent environment. Tapia has probably never seen an infield fly rule drop(intentional or otherwise) while he's the lead runner, while many of us nobodies have because we played with similarly untalented 8 and 12 year olds growing up.
  20. sigh, Zobrist hit the ball harder than that like 4 times today and he's on an 0-fer frustrating
