  1. That's funny, because I don't see any of those.
  2. Problem with this is the Cubs have like a dozen of that possible reliever going all the way to guys like Wyatt Short and Craig Brooks. If trading from the ML squad I'd like to see them bring back a possible starter I guess we'd trade them Almora so that we can option the Rule 5 pick? That's much more than teams typically pay for that kind of thing. Also, didn't they just trade away a much better version of Almora in Margot? What makes anyone think they'd be interested in Albert? Also, also, they already signed Lagares from that list to a 2020 MiLB contract.
  3. Along those lines, the Cubs should be attractive to all these injured / comeback guys. With clear openings in the rotation and pen this year and even more next year, there is a clear path with the Cubs to re-establish themselves.
  4. It would be interesting to get multiple years in there to see if it autocorrelates.
  5. De Haan was rehabbing an injury at the time of the trade and is now reinjured. If you take a guy who is basically only available because of his injury risk and he gets injured right away, that's a whiff no matter how well he played in the month he was active. Fair enough. I suppose you have to add bringing Shaw back into the whiff category too. It's the move they didn't make, trading Gustafson, that was probably the worst thing that happened this past off season. Yeah, his offseason would have been so much better if he doesn't do the trades he made, but does trade Gustafson.
  6. Nylander has been okay and is still just 21. However, the cost was way too high. The Maata trade was and is horrible. While we needed the defensive depth, there's no doubt that Kahun is easily the more valuable player. Just eliminate the Nylander and Maata trades and we're in a much better spot. Kahun/Joker would be much better for this roster than Nylander/Maata. Carpenter and Smith were both acquired to address the penalty kill, right? They've been pretty successful in that role. But the limitations they bring to the 4th line have been bad. As goony says, when you acquire a pre-injured player, it's no surprise when he gets injured again. DeHaan was probably worth the risk at the cost we paid. Bringing back Shaw was just Stan being Stan. That one was a whiff. Lehner has probably been the single most important player in giving them a shot at the playoffs this year. Does Kubalik count as an offseason move? If so, that was a great addition. Drafting Dach looks pretty good right now. On balance, it was a decent offseason for Stan. But he needed a great one.
  7. So...at least one offseason move was a hit. But yeah, sell.
  8. Looking at that list makes me hope even harder that about 5-6 of our minor league pitchers break out in a big way in the upper levels this year.
  9. Brusdar Graterol cannot possibly be a real name.
  10. Easy over for me
  11. So, wait, I thought this was happening today?
  12. Tom will not be happy with AA's placement.
  13. He's well-traveled catcher Caleb's brother, as well. There goes the Arenado and Lindor dream. You forgot Mookie.
  14. I say we piss off MLB and go all superteam for a year. Trade for Betts. Trade for Lindor. Trade for Arenado. CF - Betts RF - Bryant 1B - Rizzo 3B - Arenado LF - Schwarber SS - Lindor 2B - Baez C - Contreras Yeah, that's the good stuff. Maybe more right handed hitters than you'd like, but damn. Also, while the OF defense may be subpar, that would be an amazing infield.
  15. So, just for giggles, let's say the Cubs decide to get under the tax next year at this point. They have enough money coming off the books that it will be easier next year, anyway They trade some odds and ends to the Rockies for Arenado. They keep Bryant until next offseason. What else could they still do to maximize chances in 2020? They would have a lineup of: CF Happ Rf Bryant 1b Rizzo 3b Arenado LF Schwarber SS Baez C Contreras 2b Bote Which, okay, that works. They'd have a bench with Heyward, Souza, Caratini, Almora and Descalso. SP beyond Yu and Hendricks would still be a question. RP has potential for being anywhere from really good to horrible. Would you double down on trying to move Contreras for pitching? I don't know that teams are going to trade any mlb starting pitching away at this point of the off-season though. There's not much left in FA, but maybe a lefty bat at 2b like a healthy Gennett helps balance the bottom of the lineup. Meh, fun to think about, but won't happen anyway.
  16. Yeah I don’t see how Scooter knocks Almora off the roster unless they feel really good about Nico being able to handle CF. Adding Scooter would more likely result in Nico starting in AAA, Descalso being cut, or deciding not to carry a third catcher (which I think is somewhat possible with us adding Phagley to try and get Willy some extra OF time). The only way Almora doesn’t make the opening day roster, for me, is if he’s hurt or they sign Pillar or get a CF’er in a late offseason trade here. I’d much prefer Holt or Zobrist to Scooter too. I can’t imagine they cost much more. Scooter's best wRC+ seasons: 129 125 123 104 92 Holt's best wRC+ seasons: 109 103 99 97 Yes, Scooter is coming off of a season with a 44 where he was injured. Holt had a 50 in 2017, so he's not immune to bad seasons, either. Scooter is also two years younger than Holt and *nine* years younger than Zobrist.
  17. Except that in high school (and travel ball), the pitchers are often also the best hitters, because they're the best athletes on the team. So pitchers don't inherently suck at hitting, they just get asked to stop doing it the second they turn pro It’s not because they get asked to stop doing it, it’s because they face world class hurlers instead of that guy from River City high. It’s the same reason Michael Jordan couldn’t hit. Just because you the best ever at shooting a large inflated ball into a metal hoop, doesn’t mean you can hit a small hard ball with a stick at an world class level. Pitching is an entirely different skill than hitting. Michael Jordan hadn't seen a hard pitched baseball in like 10 years, went straight to AA and hit over .200 with a good walk rate. Take a top 10 draft pick straight out of high school and put them in AA in their first year and they might not do much better.
  18. I've liked Scooter as a target all offseason. He was really good at the plate in each of his previous two healthy seasons. Given our roster, he's a really logical risk.
  19. They're slowly building towards their all-Marte lineup.
  20. I think that's a false choice. It's not Almora vs the only centerfield option out there (if that's even true). It's also Almora vs a back up 3B/2B, or a corner outfield guy who maybe hits lefties really well. There are at least two, probably three guys on the roster who can spell Happ in center. I'll expand my point then. If we've only got a couple million to spend, I'd prioritize the bullpen instead of the bench at this point. Obviously, if we've got more to spend, then let's go nuts.
  21. I'll say this, but I really hate saying it...If they've only got a couple million to spend, we're probably better off adding to the bullpen than upgrading from Almora to Pillar. But I really wish we had non-tendered Almora and invested his $1.8M elsewhere. I think there are a variety of AAAA guys available each year that could provide everything he will.
  22. This game is outstanding so far.
  23. what is a bane? Top dollar criminal consulting firm
  24. How do you know that it is "instead of"? Well we certainly have the "quantity" part covered, but the "quality" part has yet to be proven. Signing a bunch of castoffs from other teams doesn't bode well for optimism, but we might get lucky with 1 or 2. Well, we signed a big money reliever last year that has a no doubt HOF resume in progress. How did that work out? There is (almost) no such thing as a sure thing in the bullpen. Anyone with a long enough record of success to give you warm and fuzzy feelings is probably about due for serious regression and/or a randomly horrible season.
  25. Quantity instead of quality doesn't necessarily translate into a solid bullpen. How do you know that it is "instead of"?
