  1. I met Fergie Jenkins and got his autograph back around 1968 when he was still playing for the CUBS. Great guy !!
  2. A little flair for the dramatic ? I like the way you're thinking there, Jimy !
  3. Hey, call your buddy Hendry and make it happen !!
  4. Isn't he from your part of the world ?
  5. Well.... between you and my wife and my dog..... that makes 3 of you !!
  6. If I was taking the train into the city everyday and walking from Northwestern Station to my office, I'd want have a Houston Astros cap right about now. But, that's just me.
  7. When I was a young pup (late teens, early 20s) I suffered terribly from insomnia. Nothing I tired would let me get to sleep before 3 or 4 in the morning, and when you have to be up at 7, that's a recipe for disaster. I went to the doctor and he tried a couple of medications, and those failed miserably. About the third time I went back to the doctor, he kind of threw his hands up in exasperation and offered this remedy.... I hear sleeping outdoors cures insomnia. I looked him right between the eyes and said, hey... if you think about... sleeping indoors cures insomnia just as well, no? This CUBS team doesn't need to learn how to win at Wrigley Field..... they need to learn how to win. Don't make it more complicated than it is.
  8. That was an outrageous sum of money to pay for a ticket to a baseball game in 1959 !! Lower level reserveed box seats for the CUBS were going for $2.50 & 3.00 during the regular season in 1959.
  9. Boys and girls, a lot of time has passed and I've gotten pretty long in the tooth, if you know what I mean. I've reconciled myself long ago to the fact that I would never see my beloved CUBS win a World Series. I can live with that, really, I can. Don't like it one bit, but I can live with it. Now, the white sox are about to make their 5th appearance in the World Series. Fifth !! You know that the CUBS made their 5th WS appearance back in 1918 don't you ?? Yeah, lost to that team from Boston that's done but whine and moan about Babe Ruth for the next 86 years ! But, back to the white sox. Here' a franchise that's won 2 out of every 3 World Series that they didn't thow. Fine upstanding boys. No coincidence that their team colors are black, eh? Bottom line here..... I got a family history of heart disease, so there's just 2 things I want to make sure of. 1) Let's get about 4 quick wins for that Houston team, and 2) Don't let that Daley brat anywhere near the air raid sirens. My health may depend on it.
  10. Believe me, we can relate !! Good luck to you and the Astros !!
  11. What a polsitively wonderful way to close down Busch Stadium for the final time !!!
  12. I wasn't going to either way. Anything that involves the White Sox is bad television. Au contraire, Pierre !! Watching the white sox lose is always good entertainment, whether it be on tv, radio, or in person !!
  13. Well.... looks like I just became a Houston Astros fan.
  14. For the record...... 1876 thru 2004 World Series team W L pct PA W L St. Louis Cardinals 8801 8539 0.508 21 9 7
  15. You dont "barely win" 99 games. Sure you can. 32-18 in 1 run games this season. since I didn't see a site listing 1-run numbers, I'm not about to go look at every team's record to compare that. But does anyone want to say there was a team that won more (and a higher percentage of its) close games? I found it interesting that the '59 white sox went 35-15 in 1 run games, and finished 94-60 (.6104) which is very nearly the same percentage as 99-63 (6.111).
  16. Oh, Vance.............. :hammer:
  17. Oh, pooo !! You mean I gotta go back and shoot out that camera ???
  18. You don't think those construction guys would notice if about 1,000 of those bricks disappeared, would they ???? http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b137/Hornkohl/House005.jpg
  19. Hey, don't be dissing the bald guy !! My hairline was receding before I got out of high school.
  20. The White Sox were a winning ballclub, the Cubs weren't. The Cardinals were a winning ballclub, the Cubs weren't. See how important chemistry is ????

  22. Actually, in the case of the CUBS you could make a reasonable argument that the pitching staff does perform slightly better when the CUBS score 1 or more runs in the first inning...... 04/04 - 10/02 IP H R ER BB K HR BB/9 K/9 HR/9 WHIP ERA CUBS zero runs 1120.0 1051 559 529 442 988 148 3.55 7.94 1.19 1.33 4.25 CUBS 1 or more 320.0 306 155 145 134 268 37 3.77 7.54 1.04 1.38 4.08 CUBS overall 1440.0 1357 714 674 576 1256 185 3.60 7.85 1.16 1.34 4.21 What's really more fun to look at, though, is the effect that scoring in the first inning has on the CUBS' offense...... 04/18 - 10/02 AB R H 2b 3b HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS CUBS zero runs 4298 479 1111 246 14 130 1775 460 306 714 0.258 0.311 0.413 0.724 CUBS 1 or more 1287 224 395 76 9 64 681 214 113 206 0.307 0.369 0.529 0.898 CUBS overall 5585 703 1506 322 23 194 2456 674 419 920 0.270 0.324 0.440 0.764 R/G Record pct Not scoring in the first 3.77 53-74 .417 Scoring in the 1st inning 6.40 26-09 .743 CUBS overall 4.34 79-83 .488 Never underestimate the value of getting off to a fast start, eh?
  23. Cuse, you sure know how to turn a phrase !
