  1. I wasn't advocating it, just suggesting that Hendry might.
  2. and Looks like you aren't alone in that line of thinking.
  3. No, Cedeno starts at SS and Neifi gets 2B. Walker's gone in a trade. There's no doubt about it now. We have too many holes to fill without getting rid of him. There are other options too, like AGone part II. Unfortunately, I wouldn't consider Cedeno as our new SS a certainty by any means, yet.
  4. I'm not sure that Furcal was on the Dodgers radar for that long but they came in at the last minute and possibly signed him. I think that Hendry has the funds and the ability to do the same thing for any free agent or player that he wants to trade for. I'd rather trade for Pierre than sign Damon regardless. Damon is too old to be asking for so much. Damon is 32. Is that old for a CF? He is a good OBP & his BB/K rates are very impressive. As far as when Pie is ready, we could move either him or Damon to a corner OF spot. Damon doesn't have nearly enough power or throwing arm for a corner spot. And what concerns me is not what Damon will do at 32 or 33, but at 35 and 36. His agent has said he waints 7 years, and while that is ridiculous, I can't see him signing for less than 4 or 5. If he would sign a 3 year deal, I'd probably go for it. But at 4 or 5 years at probably 11-13 million per, someone else can have him.

  6. He's not. We are going to have a real fiasco on our hands. I just hope he gets really creative in Dallas.
  7. Hendry is just Dusty's enabler. Both are problems. Yes, but let's not absolve Dusty of any wrong-doing here just because Hendry got outbid (foolishly) by the Dodgers. Oh, I wasn't absolving Dusty of anything. Dusty is a boob.
  8. You're right, and that makes me sad. Has anybody told him that you can get quality offensive players that play good defense? (Bradley) It doesn't have to be a one or the other type of thing, right? So let's set the over/under on ABs for Neifi this year at 550? Neifi was going to start anyways. He got starters money. If we snagged Furcal, Neifi would get his PA at 2B. All we did today is limit the damage JH tries to do to this team. Neifi was a blow to the 2006 and 2007 Cubs already inflicted upon us by our GM. Theo in '07!! Please don't make me think about Neifi in 2007. I've already convinced myself that we'll have a different manager then. If used correctly, he 'could' be a useful player (worth about .5 mill, not 2.5). Maybe Dusty will realize how bad of a GM Hendry is and jump ship to LA before the season. The organization really seems to be clueless. So, you're saying Dusty isn't part of the problem? Hendry is just Dusty's enabler. Both are problems.
  9. The worst thing is that I let all this speculation about Furcal signing with us distract me from my homework all afternoon/night. And for what?
  10. FWIW, the LA Times is owned by the Tribune Co. True, But I still find it odd that its been close to an hour and NO other media source has reported it except the LA times has reported this. I just noticed that Chicagosports.com took down the article they reported around 8:pm tonight. I wonder what's up with that??? What did that article say? Just a bit about how Hendry hoped to have Furcal signed in the next couple days.
  11. Well, the earlier story about Furcal has been pulled from the Trib site.
  12. Neither am I. I've wanted Cedeno to be SS since the offseason began. I don't think Furcal was worth $10M per year -- let alone $13M. I agree to a point here - I don't want Furcal at $10m+ - but I wouldn't mind seeing Nomar re-signed for a year. If that isn't happening, I'm all for starting Cedeno at SS. The problem with that plan is that I can't imagine Dusty actually doing it, especially with another rookie (Murton) starting. Looks like we might see a lot of Neifi again in 2006.... A fair point, but Cedeno is simply better than Perez. Playing a lesser player is grounds for firing, in my book. And you shouldn't have to craft a roster so as to prevent the bizarre use of players like Hollandsworth and (potentially) Perez. In the theoretical world where the choices are Cedeno and Perez for SS, Hendry needs to make it clear that Cedeno is the guy. Not Perez. If Dusty doesn't and plays Perez instead, he needs to be let go. Playing a lesser player should be grounds for firing, but Dusty did it all last year. There is not much reason to expect anything has changed.
  13. Neither am I. I've wanted Cedeno to be SS since the offseason began. I don't think Furcal was worth $10M per year -- let alone $13M. I think assuming this makes Cedeno the starting SS is assuming too much.
  14. I've been with you since day one on this. To paraphrase Bill Clinton: It's the outfield, stupid! I'm all about Todd Walker. Problem is, I don't think Hendry or Dusty are.
  15. I am very fazed by the idea of a Neifi/Cedeno middle infield.
  16. Why is Cedeno at SS and Walker at 2B more complicated? After all, those are their natural positions, and we already have both under lock and key for 2006. They are too inexpensive. They must suck. I really think Hendry has made up his mind to trade Walker. Nearly every rumor has his name in it, and he doesn't catch the ball as well as Hendry would like. Just my opinion, but I think Walker's tenure with the Cubs ends before the winter meetings, Furcal or no Furcal.
  17. Unfortunately Hendry re-signed Neifi so we have to take into account that we may not be comparing Furcal to Cedeno, but Furcal to Perez. Is having Furcal at such an elevated price worth keeping Neifi out of the leadoff slot? It sure the hell is. Having Perez/Cedeno at SS/2B is a scenario that cannot happen if the Cubs are to win. Walker is trade bait, and I would be stunned if he is back next year. That is wrong, but all indications are that it is the case. It's a sad situation, but it is what it is.
  18. bump. Just in case it gets missed. Everything I hav eheard says that the break even point is at 75%, and Furcal is usually 7-10% higher than that. He is an effective basestealer. Among the top 10 basestealers in MLB in 2005, only Jimmy Rollins and Carl Crawford had higher success rates, and Furcal's 82% was his lowest in a few years.
  19. Sorry I didn't finsih my thought. He doesn't steal effetively enough to warrent the attempts so..... Don't overvalue the benefit of a leadoff hitter. His career SB percentage is over 80%, so I reject your assertion that he isn't successful enough to warrant the attempts.
  20. I may be overly sensitive, but going for it on fourth down when you are up by 53 in the fourth is a tad unecessary.
  21. Somewhere Raisin is crying.
  22. Absolutely agree. Think about this folks: 5 years and $45M for a guy, who has never achieved an OPS over .795, and who's OBP has not been above .352 in the last 4 seasons. This is just not smart. That is true, but I would almost pay the extra 2 or 3 million to keep Neifi off the field.
  23. 52-6 USC. By the time this is over, UCLA may not be in the top 25 anymore.
  24. Excellent. If he signs with us, I owe everyone that actually believed it beforehand here a Coke. I'm serious. I'll mail everyone here a Coke if he signs here. That's a lot of cokes. Can I get a Cherry Coke if it happens? Ewww, coke. How about a Pepsi?
