  1. Yeah, I'm hoping this sort of thing is the case, that the lack of motivation was due to a piss poor offer. If the return isn't even worth the potential comp pick, then it's not worth it. If Hendry doesn't want to move him just because he doesn't want to move him, that's something else altogether.
  2. The team can't move Z or Soriano, and there's no reason to move Ramirez unless the offer is really, really good. And I don't mind seeing the Cards and Crew giving up their long term assets for moderate, very short term gains. Meanwhile, Ricketts is pouring money into the amateur side, which is a new, very positive direction. This offseason will be the first since the new ownership took over in which there will be substantial money to be spent. I'll wait until well into the offseason before I cast any aspersions about the direction of the team.
  3. what the [expletive]??? Yeah, we'll sell our best player, but don't even ask us about our dime-a-dozen middle infielder! We're building around that guy.
  4. He would fill a hole and he likes to drink and drive. A perfect fit.
  5. I still think Marmol should hit the DL for a while.
  6. I have to imagine the Angels would make the strongest play for Ramirez.
  7. What a clutch bat flip. Kosuke's bat flip was [expletive] awesome. Too bad we didn't get to see more of it.
  8. You want to give Alex Anthopoulos huge credit for this deal, but Williams and Mozeliak just look varying degrees of stupid. Mozeliak especially. I think you may as well just rename the Cardinals the St. Louis LaRussas after this. Mo is not a good GM, not at all. This deal looks a whole lot like AA was taking advantage of a couple of morons.
  9. This campaign to tear Rasmus down before dealing him (presumably) is totally Cubs-like.
  10. Another reason you all don't want Rasmus: he has wall-shyness (I believe Andy Van Slyke created this term). We need more guys who embrace the wall instead of fearing it. We don't need guys like Rasmus, we need guys like Rick Ankiel. He may not be great, but he loves that wall. http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/dd358/Cloudstrife219/s090504_ankiel.jpg We need more of that than actual ability, especially when winning is important. Sure, it may nearly kill you, but looking like you care is what wins ball games.
  11. Other teams have more prospects. Trading for Jimenez would be more of a challenge than signing Wilson, I think. Agreed. I much prefer the idea of trying to sign Wilson instead of trading Jimenez. I was just countering WSR's apparent conclusion that the Cubs have a better chance of getting Jiminez via trade as opposed to signing Wilson. But there are more teams willing to part with money than wiling to put together the kind of prospect package that it would take to acquire a front end starter. And we don't have the pieces to offer that other teams do. We do have as much money to spend as anyone, though.

  13. I'd rather sign Wilson than give up that much for Ubaldo. I agree.
  14. The fact that Marshall is a non-closer reliever will diminish any return, as well as the money he'll get. I don't see him getting "a lot" more expensive, nor do I see a compelling reason to deal him.
  15. Don't forget the Cards. If they can somehow retain Pujols and Wainwright, and Miller and Martinez pan out, they'll be very tough, especially if they keep Rasmus and he hits his full potential. That's a lot of ifs. It could happen, but I wouldn't count on it. Part of the problem they and crew now face is that they don't have many trade chips going forward. Any big move they make will cost them Rasmus or Miller, and they'll have to address that pen if they want to be really good. That, and I think Albert's best days are behind him. They have a chance to be consistently good, but not a team you look at and see a potential run of dominance. The Reds have their issues, but a lot of big league talent and a well stocked farm system. They're the only team in the division that can currently make that claim.
  16. Matt Garza's recent stretch is one of the best illustrations I've seen of why W/L for a pitcher doesn't mean [expletive].
  17. The only team in the division that you could look at and say "that team has a good chance to be really tough for a few years" is the Reds.
  18. In spite of it's cheesiness, I like the song when the Cubs are doing well. At times like these, hearing it is eye-roll inspiring.
  19. This is as pessimistic a view of the situation as it is conceivably possible to portray. Pretty much. It paints the best possible picture for our rivals and the worst for us. Besides, trading Barney isn't going net enough to improve our situation in any appreciable way. I wouldn't be opposed to trading him and he is easily replaceable from within, but if you're only going to get more organizational filler, what's the point?
  20. I never said he was a key player. He has value to the team because he's cheap and decent. We likely wouldn't get anything worthwhile for him in a trade, so that defeats the point. Our division has solid teams, but no great team. That's why we can compete next year. Also, the Cardinals and Brewers are likely losing their superstar first basemen. Well the Brewers are losing their first baseman, anyway. And the Brewers' farm system is completely dried up, and the Cardinals system isn't in much better shape. None of the teams in this division are poised for prolonged dominance.
  21. Yeah, like Cards fans can read. (it needed to be said) when cardinals fans want to destroy a car they just drink a bottle of jack and hop behind the wheel. They're just trying to be like the players and manager they idolize.
