  1. It's not just Hendry, though. Traditional thinking tends to be that balance in a lineup is more important than having the best talent in the lineup. I remember numerous times last year and offseason when ESPN analysts would bemoan the lack of left handed hitting in the Cubs' lineup and that being why they lost to the Dodgers. Hendry is not alone in this thinking. The fact that other people think the same dumb way doesn't justify it. I never said it did. Just that it's not only a Hendry obsession.
  2. From what I've heard, it's not his arm that's the problem. It's his glove. Buy him a new glove. problem solved :D) Hmmm . . . how about glovework, then. :)
  3. You're almost certainly right. They might give a little for Wells, though, if he continues to be pretty good at the ML level.
  4. Did Andres Blanco kick your dog or something? We get it. You don't like Andres Blanco. The horse is dead already replace kick with sucks, replace your with at, replace dog with baseball and you've got your answer. I've seen worse than Andres Blanco. He's generally a bad hitter, but was OPSing .800 in 153 ABs this year. He also has a career 5.8 UZR in the majors in 386 innings. As long as he's just filler and not part of a longterm plan, I don't really have a problem with him.
  5. If we're giving Marshall (which we'd probably have to) I wouldn't want to give Cashner. The Marshall/Jackson duo is probably similar (though a bit less) to what the Sox were giving and Cashner is worth way more than Kouzmanoff. I might do Marshall, Jackson and 2 PTBNLs, but others have made good points about his salary giving us issues. I might throw in a Randy Wells or Jake Fox to get Kouz thrown in, but that's about it. Jake Fox does the Padres 0 good unless they plan to flip him over to an AL team. Can you imagine him trying to patrol that PetCo outfield? Yikes. I suppsoe maybe a Wells/Stevens/Hart/Atkins/Reinhard/Caridad throw in would suffice. Yeah, I was just throwing out names of borderline prospects when I mentioned Fox. I would go no higher than one of Wells/Hart/Atkins for Kouzmanoff in the earlier proposed deal. Any more and you have to have him produce and that's a pretty big gamble.
  6. They might deal him reasonably, but just because they're certain to fall out of contention doesn't mean they accept that. I wouldn't want him for the extra year even if we did get him reasonably, though.

  8. Yes, he did everything the Cubs could have asked him to do. I'm sure the downturn is inevitable, but he deserved to stay up. I think the biggest reason he was sent down was that he had the flu and was just taking up a bench spot. But yes, he's been more than anyone could have hoped for to this point and I think he deserves to continue getting some opportunities. He certainly should play a lot until we make a trade for a third baseman (if we do).
  9. Rolen is hitting decently enough, but I'd worry that the Jays will ask a king's ransom for him. They're competing (for now) and he's producing, so he won't come cheap. And welcome to the board!
  10. From what I've heard, it's not his arm that's the problem. It's his glove. Apparently he can't catch the ball behind the plate or in the field.

  12. I have no doubt he will overpay. But look on the bright side. When hendry is fired we can hire Depo and he'll rebuild the farm like he did for the dodgers. Like Truffle asked, besides the Pierre trade, when has Hendry significantly overpaid in a trade? Right now, Hendry overpaying or not doesnt enter into the equation. We could surely out together a package similar to the White Sox. Its a matter of getting the go ahead from the owner, and since theres no owner, thats easier said than done. Eh, I don't want to overpay much for Peavy. I'm already on the fence as to whether I think he's valuable enough to add. That said, the ownership will need to get more in place before we can do anything, I would think. As for overpaying, Hendry is usually really good not overpaying in trades.
  13. Even though he hasn't been gone long, it's nice to see Scales back.
  14. So it was primarily to get "more left handed." Oh well....
  15. There's no way Lee is being benched. Especially when he's OPSing .941 over the past month.
  16. The easiest path would still be to trade Peavy though. You're not getting much for the latter group of players and trading Gonzalez wouldn't be the best idea.
  17. I'm not saying I love him, but if Scales could keep his OBP up in the mid to high .300s for the next 2-3 weeks, he'd be ok at second until Durham was ready. Either way, I agree that settling on a more certain starter at third and second for the duration (until we make a trade or Aramis comes back at least) would be helpful to the players.
  18. If Freel goes on the DL the 10-day period doesn't apply. You can bring up a player less than 10 days after sending him down if it's to replace a player going on the DL. Theoretically they could call Scales back up as soon as tomorrow if Freel goes on the DL. Ah, thanks. He'll probably have to stay down for a couple days as he gets over the flu, but if Freel is DLd, I wouldn't be surprised in any way if Scales is his replacement.
  19. I'd be fine with just giving the job to two of the three and then using the third as a backup, but I don't think the answer is Kevin Kouzmanoff. I still would like to see Ray Durham signed, however. And yes, this is all moot now with the demotion of Scales and promotion of Blanco. :D Durham would be good, but hed probably need a few weeks to get ready. And now that Freel may be injured, something might have to give. I say bring Scales back up and play him at second (after the 10-day period of course). Plant Fontenot at third then and give Durham a little time to get ready. Once Durham is ready, he replaces Scales. Once Ramirez returns, you come up with something. (Bench the worst of Fontenot/Durham perhaps) That does leave Blanco as the starting 2B for a week, though, I guess.
  20. Now Freel may have a legit injury. Good by 3 headed monster, hello trade. Probably not, but it would be nice. Sign Ray Durham That would be terrific. And I'm definitely pulling for Fox to be a good bat off the bench.

  22. 1) And it also raises concerns about how well he'll hit for us 2) Incentive for them not to trade him cheaply 3) More incentive not to trade him cheaply 4) Even more incentive not to trade him cheaply 5) Good point 6) I don't put huge stock in a couple hundred ABs a year, but it is nice 7) True 8) Again, true 9) He's never played it before, so I wonder if he could 1) Hes not Bobby Scales 2) Hes not Ryan Freel 3) Hes not Aaron Miles He's also not that good overall and will likely cost more than he's worth in terms of prospects. But again, if he does in fact come cheap, I'm perfectly fine with a trade. I just don't think he'll come cheap enough. And again, Scales is getting on base at a perfectly fine rate right now. He just needs to play over the Miles/Freel duo.
  23. To save or come close to saving the $11 MM that Peavy's contract costs this year, the team would have to move Brian Giles - who nixed a deal to the Red Sox when they were contending - and one of Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young, Jody Gerut, Heath Bell, or Scott Hairston. That seems like a tricky thing for the Padres to do right now. Link Additionally moving Peavy will remove the albatross for the coming years, as has been noted on this board many times. I don't think they have to shave Peavy's entire contract, I think they just need to drop down to or below $40 million in payroll. I'm not sure of the specifics, but Cot's has the 25-man roster at roughly $43 million right now, meaning they need to get $3 million off the books. That doesn't change your scenario much, though. If Peavy stays, one of Adrian Gonzalez, Brian Giles or Chris Young will have to go. They could also put together a combination of Heath Bell, Scott Hairston, David Eckstein, Henry Blanco and Cliff Floyd. Three to four of those players would do as well.

  25. Problem is, Ricketts can't give the ok until he's officially the owner. He won't be that until the sale is completed. Good to see that the Cubs are back in negotiations with San Diego. I'm positive that if Ricketts was okay with adding Peavy's salary that the deal would be consummated. At this point there is little doubt that Ricketts will be the new owner. There is little doubt that he'll be the owner, but it's not set in stone yet. That's why I wonder if we can actually make a trade for him yet.
