  1. I think his elbow was 100% afterwards. He wasn't finishing his pitches in the same manner, though.
  2. Can we have a poll 1st? :)
  3. I think he will, I was concerned about him missing his spots and his 1/7 curve was had much less bite than before.
  4. I'm not sure. My biggest worry with maddux would be that youngsters wouldn't listen to him. I think they'd listen to him and I think Maddux would make a good coach/manager. I just think if Prior cont's at his current rate and has the desire to get into coaching/front office, he'd the best one for the job. Of course, Greg would have to show the same desire as his older brother.
  5. Williams didn't do anything as manager, he was terrible. Williams didn't turn anything around, he made them worse. Dierker won 4 division titles in his 5 years w/Houston. The Astros during Dierker's tenure had less talent than the Cubs over the last 3 years and did more with them than Baker has w/the Cubs.
  6. Dierker was run out of town for consistently getting into the playoffs and getting knocked out by ATL. You know 4 division titles in 5 years with the Astros. Williams replaced Dierker and then was fired. He was replaced by Garner.
  7. Right now, I'd probably take Maddux as well, based on his experience. Fast Forward Prior's career and if he maintains the same work ethic, which is likely the best on the Cubs right now (including Maddux) and give me Prior.
  8. If you want to know which current Cub would likely make the best GM/manager, it isn't Maddux or Blanco. It's Prior, Prior does more work scouting the opposition than anyone else, he studies the game more than anyone on the Cubs and if he ever wanted to get into managing, pitching coach, or GM, he would be the one.
  9. Stone is good at calling breaking balls in breaking ball counts, that has to count for something?
  10. Tom House mentions that pitching (even with the best mechanics) is a tearing down process, that's all I need to know. Now, combine an injured shoulder w/bad mechanics and an upcoming surgery and it becomes a bad decision to delay surgery for more pitching. The results have only confirmed that it was a bad decision. Wood didn't have any impact out of the pen, only to shut down later that month, and he might not be ready once the season starts.
  11. If a starter is going well and the game is close, I don't see the quality of last year's pen and this year's dictating whether or not Dusty would use a quicker hook. He had very good bullpens in SF and he still worked his starters too hard.
  12. I wouldn't mind it either, but I am in favor of just skipping a start. I think it leads to a better recovery more than just extra day of rest throughout the month. I'd rather see stick with a 4-5 day rest period and skip a start rather than every 5-6 days between every start. Either way it would equate to that extra starter getting 5-6 starts a month.
  13. You're not just giving Rusch extra work, you're also giving it to Z and Prior. It equates to one extra start through the month of April. If they went with a 5 man rotation thru April, the #1 starter will get 5 starts, his 5th start will be on April 28th. If they go w/a 4 man rotation, the #1 starter will have 6 starts, with his 6th start on April 28th. That's an extra start and approx. 160-180 extra pitches that could be saved. I agree with you on the extra rest in June/July, I'd have each starter skip a spot in the rotation twice, Interleague and the DH all ow the perfect time to do so, IMO. If you have the chance to give a starter some rest, use it.
  14. Assuming the worst by saying Baker didn't say those things? It was printed that the author was assuming the role of Baker, that's what I pointed out.
  15. I would not have a problem skipping the 5th guy early. I don't think the extra day off here and there is helpful that early in the season. I do think you should find way to skip guys by June/July though. 12 pitchers is dumb though, and 8 relievers is asinine, but very Cubslike as well. Why? Pitching is a tearing down process. They have 5 starters avail., there's no severe dropoff between Williams and Zambrano and certainly minimal difference between Maddux/Rusch to Williams, not to the point where it would have any impact of the standings. Early on in the year, it will take their bodies longer to recover, especially with the colder weather.
  16. The whole thing was a joke, I think it did lead to tougher testing and punishment, though. It won't be complete until they test for HGH and blood testing and they wanted to create an audience in congress. No one would watch some minor leaguer that looks like he was cooked up in a lab. I'm against the spectacle as well, but I don't they were treated unfairly in the process.
  17. Dumb.... You say you have 5 major league starters and then say you don't need 5 starters early in the year. If they skip the #5 starter early on, it's a dumb move right from the start. That type of crap angers me more than anything. They go with a 12 staff and 8 relievers, who are they going to use? 8 relievers would be pointless and some would get overworked and several would get underworked. Utilize the extra recovery time early in the season, it's there for a reason.
  18. I would go just to ask a question, which I miss out on, b/c the line would be too long. I would follow that up by having no desire to get anything signed.
  19. How is he being treated unfairly? By being accused of taking steroids? By going in front of Congess? I fail to see why he is being treated unfairly? Has Bonds and Sosa been treated unfairly? What about Brady Anderson or Bret Boone?
  20. If Zambrano is there (I'm unaware of who'll be attending) can you give us an update on his conditioning? I believe one of his goals was to be in better shape for next year.
  21. How am I paranoid? What does paranoia have to do with stating that Baker did not say it? Baker could very well say that or say the opposite of what was written in the article. I do know that Baker didn't say that, which was originally implied with the 1st couple of posts in this thread.
  22. I think that was the author assuming answers from the likely questions that will be asked at the convention. Others have done similar today.
  23. The Cards finished 2nd, the game that the Cubs won the division was in Montreal as Maddux outpitched El Presidente, the Cubs came off a tough loss and were able to get enough runs from Sandberg, Wrona, and D. Swith. That game featured a rookie Grissom and a very young Big Cat. I just watched that game very recently. :)
  24. Pitching is a tearing down process, you never get stronger as the season progresses. You get stronger in the off-season and try to minimize wear and tear by avoiding pitching while fatigued and altering your mechanics b/c of the fatigue. Also, having an effective recovery program between starts is very important. Throwing Z out there for 150 pitches is never going to make him stronger as the season wears on and his only damaging him later on. Once a pitcher gets around 115, they should look to get him out of there, if he is showing limited signs of fatigue and you have a depleted bullpen, you can bet the house and work him longer than need be. But, you should NEVER leave a pitcher out there while he is fatigued, when Baker left Zambrano out there while he was dead tired and overthrowing simply to end a losing streak, it was suicide.
  25. For the Cubs to reach that 95 win total... Murton will have to stay in the lineup, produce, and Baker has to keep him out there. Same w/Cedeno. Perez would be a utility player. Little to no regression from Lee/Barrett. Jones would have to hit as he did about 3 years ago. Ramirez healthy. Pierre would have to set the table. Baker would have to use the pen properly by not burning them out by June. Most importantly, he'd have to treat the pitchers as if it was a marathon and not a sprint. Those are the fundamental changes, something we'd have to see.
