  1. Wesley Snipes? Maybe I'll just call him Blade.
  2. Not disputing the point about moving up the rankings, but the Cubs have done more than pad the back-end of the top 10 under the new FO already, without considering returns for this year's trades. With the trades we should expect a dramatic change. In you do a top 10 list comparison from August 2011 to August 2012, there should be significant differences including up to 1.
  3. I asked this one earlier, but I didn't see a response...any idea when any or all of these 3 project to be in Daytona?
  4. Are we going to see Baez, Almora, and Soler progress at the same rate? I might have to more trips to the Daytona Cubs next year or 2014.
  5. Wouldn't the acquiring team presumably be looking at him as a DH anyway? I can't see any NL teams being front-runners for him.
  6. I wonder how much of this is due to being on a losing team that is out so early (this year and last). Some people only really hone in when the games matter.
  7. Methinks Appel is going to be pitching in the independent leagues next year - sounds like he still wants 1.1 money. It sure does seem the Cubs were keen on Almora's maturity and drive. When you're looking to change a culture from the ground up, it's easy to see why Almora why rise to the top of their board. You simply don't find 18 year old kids with that kind of dedication and natural leadership.
  8. I realize this is slightly off-topic, because it doesn't make sense in a Garza trade scenario (not that the Yankees would trade him anyway), but should the Cubs pursue Robinson Cano after next year? 2B is a big hole for the future, but Cano will be 31 in his next FA year and probably command 7+ years. I'm assuming the Yankees pickup the 2013 option. Forgive me if this was already discussed somewhere in the 80 previous pages.
  9. I'm in agreement with Tim on the #6 pick. It's going to end up a position player from the group of Buxton, Correa, or Almora.
  10. Polish and Ceiling on kid that young is a good take. Sounds kind of like a description that might have been put on Castro actually.
  11. Kieth Law put out his updated 100 and makes the following note on Appel (at 6): Analysis: For various small reasons, industry sentiment on Appel seems to have cooled slightly, and I don't think it's a coincidence that it started the week after he threw 149 pitches against Oregon on April 13. Previous ranking: 3 | 3 As others have pointed out, Appel is still showing at 1 on other analysts mocks.
  12. Marmol's self-destruction is very sad. When he was on, he was literally the most dominant one inning pitcher I have ever seen. I recall a 10 pitch, 3K close once that blew my mind.
  13. This was my first thought as well, though I was leaning toward "pleasant surprise" more than all-star worthy.
  14. The Cubs collective pitching staff will be in the top half of the NL for key metrics including WAR.
  15. I really wanted Rizzo, so this makes me very happy. Garza for an elite pitching prospect and the waiting for awesome begins.
  16. At least one team whose star power lies in younger guys (under 30) has made the playoffs every year for the last several. It's not the norm, but Tampa, San Francisco, Arizona, Milwaukee have all made splashes in the playoffs with a young core of elite talent. Washington fits the bill. 2012 might be a stretch, but it's not an impossibility should Philly suffer some key losses in addition to Howard.
  17. I can't buy that argument. It's like claiming the Iraq war is Obama's war. Until Hendry's contracts roll off, the team still has his footprint. The front office inherited a mess. They could have continued to band-aid the mess as has been done for 3 straight years, or they could blow it up and build it the their own way.
  18. Didn't see anything on this yet, from Jason Churchill ESPN: "After acquiring Yonder Alonso in the trade that sent right-hander Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds, the San Diego Padres could shop first baseman Anthony Rizzo to help the club fill other holes, perhaps in the starting pitching department. Rizzo could be a fit for a number of clubs that do not have a long-term solution at first base, including the Tampa Bay Rays, reports Dan Hayes of the North County Times. The Rays could offer Wade Davis as part of a package, so the Cubs, another club reportedly expressing interest in Rizzo, may have to dig deep to land the first baseman, a player the new regime in Chicago knows well. The Cubs may not be able to match Davis, a club-controlled pitcher with frontline abilities, but they do have some pieces, including centerfielder Brett Jackson. Other potentially interested clubs include the Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians." Looks like pure speculation. Anyone have thoughts?
  19. Having people's predictions in the thread will make it tough to fish out the actual updates for anyone trying to follow.
  20. Marlins ownership has been under hot water in the city for deceiving the council on their finances and getting the city to pay damn near the entirety of the new stadium. The reality is that the team was always financially profitable, they just claimed otherwise for leverage. Now it's a just a matter of 'spend money to make money' in order to boost interest/attendance.
  21. I guess Gammons is missing the obvious hypocrisy of his comments: if you're a bottom 3 farm system in desperate need of repair, you don't start by parting with one/two of the only names anyone cares about from that system.
  22. ESPN Insider rumors speculated that the Cubs and Red Sox should explore Soriano for Lackey. Doesn't really mean anything, but I hadn't seen it in print or pixel until now.
