  1. Because Blanco is on the shelf, maybe for the year, and Hill sucks. The Cubs need two catchers right now. I would be surprised if Bowen is the full-time starter.
  2. Selling teams don't dump players for little return. Selling teams have an interest in the near future, looking for players near MLB ready to make an impact in the next 2 years.
  3. ESPN has now changed its story to reflect an OF. ESPN also reports the Padres gave the Cubs cash.
  4. The details are in... http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/weblog/2007/06/padres_get_barrett.html FWIW, I think Barrett's trade value is a little overrated on here. As has been noted several times already, there are conflicting reports.
  5. Hendry did okay getting D-Lee and A-Ram for garbage. So he got lucky with those (and Nomar at the time), but weigh his good trades/signings against his bad ones. See which way your scale tips. So he got lucky with the guys that are the cornerstone of the team? Right. This thread doesn't need to become Hendry Sox Redux 998,776,432. Cubs fans have no way to look at this objectively.
  6. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Kyler%2520Burke&pos=CF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=501965 :| RF? I thought someone said it was a pitcher? ESPN2 news update just said minor league pitcher also.
  7. You're about the sixth person to make the complaint, but not one person has stated why its a bad deal with any amount of reason.
  8. Barret wasn't going to be traded without all the drama. There was choice but to trade low, because trading him wasn't an option previously.
  9. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/B/Rob-Bowen.shtml color me unimpressed Ugh. That's terrible.
  10. I understand that you don't give up a lot for middle relievers, but Linebrink is the best. His 3-year splits are ridiculously good. Is Epatt really that much to give up?
  11. I wouldn't mind Bowen, who is 26 and has a nice .371 OBP this year in limited playing time. But I don't know about his minor league history.
  12. Fabulous...can't even get a name in return? Barret's bat has more value than that.
  13. It's because of the 'utility' tag. Just as the 'leadoff' tag raises value, utility lowers value. I don't think he is overpaid, because he's on his way toward 500 ABs, making him a full-time player. If you can get decent production and on base capability out of a full-time guy for under 3 million, then it's good value.
  14. I don't think so. I lived in DC for the first two years of the Nationals and people without ties to either team just wanted watch a good game. If the Cubs or Mets were in town, it was a Nats game. If the Yankees or Red Sox were in town, travel the hour up I-95 to Baltimore. None of my friends that were longtime Orioles fans gave up allegiance to root for the Nationals.
  15. I asked for Tejada three years ago when he was 'declining'. He is probably the player that makes the most sense for the Cubs, since upgrading SS is the most pressing and logical move. Give the Orioles some young pitching. The Cubs are stacked there, even with all the injuries.
  16. For what it is worth I thought Pie saw ball 6 in his at bat last night. I didn't think any of three pitches called strikes were in the zone. But that umpire had a wide zone all night anyway.
  17. It's not that they've performed better, it's that they've gotten a chance to perform. But even that has been out of a lot of necessity for Lou. Lou should get more credit than that. He still has the option to play JJ over Pie in CF and Izturis over Theriot or Fontenot at either MI position. Dusty would have forced the veterans even when it seemed like it wasn't possible, by plugging Macias at any position.
  18. You would have to first part with 2/3 of Jones, Floyd, and Murton to create room, and that is simply just not likely. The best available position to upgrade production is SS. Upgrade Izturis for an .800+ OPS SS is more likely.
  19. I'll buy that. It's better than a superstition based on a goat.
  20. I want to cry... Runs/Runs Against --- Cardinals 242/304 Cubs 287/261 W/L --- Cardinals 27-33 Cubs 27-34 How? How can one team get outscored by **62** runs and have a better record than a team that has outscored its opposition by 26 Runs. You would think this impossible. Even with a 3-13 record in one-run games, it still shouldn't be possible. :x
  21. That doesn't change the fact that the Cubs should have won this game. What drives me nuts is Fontenot's loaded dp didn't bring a run home, while the Braves loaded grounder did. Also Franceour shattered his bat on weak grounder, probably the weakest hit in the inning, and it somehow finds the only hole on the left side for a 2-out RBI earlier in the game. It astonishes me the bad luck and misfortune this team has game in and game out. Add in bad play and you get a team 3-13 in one-run games. I'm so sick of it...it'll be a week before I can watch another game, because I can't take it.
