  1. I'm not going to claim that Kendall has a gun, but he has zero passballs as a Cub this year (so it's unclear why you think 'a lot balls' got by him), and a good number of the stolen bases against the Cubs the past week have been on the pitcher. Many didn't even warrant a throw because of the pitcher.
  2. Thank you for laugh. That's the most absurd thing I've read today.
  3. Kendall has not been our problem of late.... Now that we won't be seeing Reyes and Castillo at the top of the line up it will be even less of an issue... I'm not going to complain when someone has a .957 OPS over his last 9 games, but it sure would be nice to see him throw one of the 19 baserunners that have attempted a stolen base on him since he came to the team. How many of those didn't even get a throw? Half? Cubs pitchers are doing a terrible job holding runners.
  4. actually, many of these guys would have to play DOWN to expectations, as they are playing above their heads right now. do not want Who exactly is playing above their head besides Fontenot? derosa lilly marquis howry marmol Very nice. My original post was talking purely offense. You list 4 pitchers and a player who is performing as expected (.788 OPS, expected drop-off from career year last year). I understand what you're trying to say, but you can't quote my post about offense, state that I've got it backwards, and then counter with players not involved in the discussion.
  5. By all account I've read (besides fans here), DeRosa is an above average defensive outfielder.
  6. actually, many of these guys would have to play DOWN to expectations, as they are playing above their heads right now. do not want Who exactly is playing above their head besides Fontenot? Lee, Soriano, and Ramirez have OPS values as expected, but with HR power drops for each. Everyone else on the team besides those 4 players have below .800 OPS. I would much, much rather have Lee, Jones, Floyd, and Ramirez have HR power rebounds (to expected pace for 2 months) and suffer a drop from Fontenot, than continue on course.
  7. The Cubs have to hope that everyone on offense starts performing up expectations at the same time, or they are in trouble. Even with the hot June and July, many guys on the team were slumping. So far this year, we have not seen everyone in the lineup hot at the same time. I think they're due. Otherwise, they have to rely on the pitching to hold down all the crappy teams they play the rest of the way.
  8. The bullpen by and large though has been very good. You can find several examples of how they held the opposition scoreless. What I questioned last night was Piniella using Ohman in that situation. You play the hot hand...Ohman has not been hot recently. I would never have put him in there. I think Piniella has his faults with bullpen 'roles'. Eyre and Ohman have more or less been designated as the "we're losing, don't give 'em more" guys, or situational lefties only. I would much rather have seen Marmol or Howry in the 8th, but that only happens when they're up by 2, not down by 2.
  9. I agree. But if Bruce Miles reporting is to be believed, the cubs pitchers like Hill quite a lot, and that is the only reason he is still around.
  10. I'm certainly not anti-Soto. I'd love to see him in a Cubs uniform. I just have a feeling that Catcher is the one position Lou Piniella isn't going to leave in the hands of a rookie during a stretch-run, especially since the kid hasn't caught the staff all year. I don't think Lou is alone on this either. I think many managers have that mentality. They want a veteran receiver for a playoff push, for right or wrong. So personally, I'm just rooting for Kendall all the way and not worrying about Soto's supposed snub. And as for Kendall's arm, all those Mets/Phillies stolen bases the past week have been on the pitchers. It's been ridiculous the leads these runners have been getting.
  11. The only thing frustrating for me the last several games has been Ohman, Dempster, and Eyre. Twice the Cubs rallied back from large deficits, only to have the bullpen blow it by giving up runs as soon as the Cubs close the gap to 1/2 runs. The offense dangles the carrot of hope and the bullpen fricking eats it.
  12. The thing is, Kendall was lambasted around here for his Cubs start (1 hit in first 15 ABs), and Soto chants have been relentless. I think this thread is just correction for fans appreciating Kendall's recent performance, and there is nothing wrong with a little positive energy. Yes his OPS as a Cubs is still only .721, but it's a hell of an improvement over Hill or Bowen. And while the team has only played 5 games in August, that August line of .357/.471/.571/1.042 looks like shiny candy compared to the rest of the year.
  13. I think GMs put a lot more stock in the gentleman's agreement than fans.
  14. No way anyone who watched this game entirely would say the zone was the same. Zambrano clearly had a tighter zone, probably because Hernandez's break was fooling the ump.
  15. Should only be 4, maybe less. It's be nice to Hernandez's zone today.
  16. He is still walking people at a prolific rate though. But no runs is no runs!
  17. It really is nice to see Jones and Eyre performing lately, as much as they have been dogged (whether deserved or not).
  18. I'd say it's well past time to get over it.
  19. Thanks for keeping it work safe people. Sheesh.
  20. According to ESPN's PBP on the Yanks-White Sox game, yes the error came with one out which means there should have been two outs. The next guy grounded into a fielder's choice which was the second out but it should have been the third out and the inning should have been over with the score 3-0. Therefore any run after that is unearned. Technically, it's any run that scores after the inning should have been over. So the error can come with no outs but any runs that score with two outs are going to be unearned. Thanks. I thought they only used that logic if there was already 2 outs and the supposed third out was the play with the error. Kind of like the 'can't assume a double-play' logic, I figured you can't assume the situation remains the same with an error on only one out.
