  1. I'm guessing Aaron Brooks DFA, but I guess it could always be someone like Frankoff, Floro, Leathersich, maybe Hannemann (woof). That's 5 candidates. This offseason going to need to make room for (5) Tseng, Maples, Alzolay, Clifton, de la Cruz, maybe (3) Charcer Burks, Jason Vosler, Jose Paulino. I guess (4) Matt Carasiti, Chesny Young, Daury Torrez, David Bote could be candidates too. De la Cruz & Paulino might be too low level/not enough SP innings to worry about adding for this draft. Leaving Free Agents (7 not counting non-tenders) open a few slots I believe: Lackey/Arrieta/Davis/Jay/Uehara/Avila/Duensing
  2. Looks like Yapson Gomez got the start in Eugene tonight, not Jose Albertos. Couldn't find anything on twitter.
  3. I would try my luck with Contreras & Carl Jr to get the ball rolling. Probably early but I like both of them long term a lot & probably some incentive to get higher pay now vs. later. It would be nice to balance the future payroll increases (Arb 3/Arb 4!; Future FA SP?) against some of the likely surplus space these next few years. I think one of the underrated aspects of the Quintana trade is the payroll flexibility it offers long term. From what I can tell, this most recent CBA was particularly tough on going above the ~200M luxury tax threshold. I wouldn't be surprised to see 2019-2021 Cubs up against this number regularly while this core is together. Quintana's 5% cut of that will allow a lot more flexibility than the 30M starter (15%).
  4. Does anyone know what @Jeremiah13Estra tweeted on 6/28, then deleted on 6/29? CCDT (http://ccdt.webs.com/) seems to think he is likely to sign. Also has a Cubs hat on in his twitter profile.
  5. IMO not a chance he gets deals that low. Agreed 7 years is unlikely, 200M is nuts. But he's going to get 5 or 6 years, and an AAV that's 25M+. Shark, Wei Yin Chen, Mike Leake, Jordan Zimmermann, Ian Kennedy all got 5 years. Cueto, Greinke got 6.
  6. If those guesses are remotely accurate, the Cubs could have/should have taken Enlow at the end of round 2. He was taken 8 picks later by the Twins who everyone knew still had plenty of money to play with after taking Lewis 1st overall because they could underslot him. I don't know what Enlow's demands are so perhaps the math wouldn't have worked out and the Cubs knew it. But, damn, Little, Lange and Enlow would've been a nice haul... Enlow would have been interesting with the Round 2 pick but you would have needed to find 1.1M extra to get to 2M. In davell's exercise he is projecting 400k+ savings from slot on the Abbot pick so you have to throw that away in the Enlow scenario. So if you were only saving ~350k in surplus funds from picks #1 & #2 it was going to be very difficult to find another 750k in savings in rounds 3-10. I guess you could have punted your round #3 pick and the round 6 or 7 picks to SRs to come up with the coin, but then no money for rounds 11-40 fliers either. Interesting scenarios for sure.
  7. Enlow signed for 2M https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/06/twins-expected-to-sign-third-rounder-blayne-enlow-to-over-slot-deal.html
  8. Looks like 5 good outs from Dillon Maples.
  9. Trade him? Don't forget you will likely get a Comp pick when he declines the QO in 2018. So any trade for a partial rental would have to be better than a late first rounder. Not to mention you are trying to contend for a world series so trading one of your best pitchers doesn't really help that cause. And sentimentally because he's one of the most important pitchers to ever wear a Cubs uniform.
  10. David Price made just under $20M in his final arbitration year this season (Super two iirc). I agree that Arrieta is likely a nice price next season, but 2017 his final year of Arb I don't see any reason to expect cheaper than $15M+.
  11. His agent is Scott Boras, he's going to get full value Or you could work with some direct quotes from Jake himself: ‘‘I don’t think I’m a guy that’s going to ask for an astronomical amount of money,’’ Arrieta said Tuesday. ‘‘But I think if there’s a fair deal to be reached, I’m in 100 percent. I like pretty much everything about Chicago and the team that’s in place now, with the guys that are coming up. It’s hard not to want to stay here.’’ Arrieta said having Boras for an agent doesn’t preclude a deal. ‘‘The decision comes down to what I want to do,’’ Arrieta said. ‘‘Scott is very good about giving me all the information and letting his clients make the final decision. There’s a lot of negative talk about the way Scott does things, but I think it’s pretty clear he’s the best in the business. What it really boils down to is what I want, what the team wants, and we kind of go from there.’’ http://chicago.suntimes.com/uncategorized/7/71/198048/cubs-right-hander-jake-arrieta-open-to-long-term-contract
  12. He's the best pitcher in the entire organization, best in a long time. Lock him up. He's going to get a nice raise in 2016 already. Let's not let this get to open bidding.
  13. There was an article on his college site reporting he turned down 3rd round money from the Cubs already. That was before the Cubs made their 3rd round selection, not after he was taken in the 26th round. He also said he wanted $800,000 which is only $69,000 more than than the 3rd round slot ($731,000) he turned down. It makes me wonder if Hudson agreed to take slot and that's why he was drafted. It also makes me wonder if the Cubs were able to save $650,000 from the 6-10 senior signs and add in $150,000 in overage money if they could still get him. You may be on to something. $356k saved on picks 7 & 10; $351k saved on pick 1 = $707k + overage
  14. for my taste Underwood Zastryzny Martinez Blackburn Stinnett Black Mejia Sands Steele Ivan Pineyro Tyler Skulina Trevor Clifton Daury Torrez Juan Paniagua James Pugliese (RP) James Norwood Ryan Williams (RP)
  15. My top 20 looks like this (keeping Soler because he will likely remain rookie eligible) 1. Bryant 2. Soler 3. Russell 4. Schwarber 5. Almora 6. McKinney 7. SP Edwards 8. Torres 9. SP Johnson 10. SP Tseng 11. Vogelbach, 12. Jimenez, 13. SP Underwood, 14. RP Vizcaino, 15. RP Rivero, 16. SP J Martinez, 17. SP Zastryzny, 18. SP Black, 19. Caratini, 20. Amaya with Zagunis, Jeffrey Baez, Hannemann, Villanueva, Candelario just on the outside, as well as Blackburn, Mejia, Stinnett, Sands, Steele, Pineyro, Skulina & a plethora of other young arms that will hopefully have a few breakout candidates in 2015
