  1. Well, so much for the two day streak of our farm teams going undefeated.
  2. Name the realistic player you want the Cubs to tab at 19 so that, later, you can get angry at the Cubs with passing on that player, especially when the player they end up drafting is injured or goes through a slump and the player you wanted is mashing/blowing away other teams in the minors for another team. I'll start and go with RHP Jake Odorizzi. His arm is fresh, there's plenty of projection left for him, and he's a local product. I also like the fact that, as of May 23rd, he has an 83/4 K/BB in 50 IP. His level of competition is low, but those are still some very nice numbers.
  3. That would be insane, short-sighted, and stupid. It's probably true.
  4. PG Crosschecker at one point had him as the top prep arm in the country (unsure if they still do). Sickels didn't even have him in his Top 10 prep arms, much less his Top 30 overall. Brewerfan has him ranked at #18. I think a lot of this depends on how much teams would be willing to pony up for Cole and Meyer and whether Ethan Martin and Aaron Hicks end up hitting or pitching.
  5. My friend just called and informed me that he had an extra ticket for tonight's game. :D Yay!
  6. He's not in the Top 10...so who knows? :D This is one of those years where the Top 10 is relatively easy to pin down, but everything after that is a jumbled mess. I'll keep up hope!
  7. Your buddy must not be a very good lawyer. ;)
  8. Goldstein (BP) didn't think he'd slip out of the top 10 and wasn't similar to Porcello. Callis thought he'd slip but wouldn't slip as low as Detroit at 21. I really, really, really hope he falls to 19. I'm honestly not as excited for Hosmer. This draft has a ton of very good 1Bs who will come cheaper, although they may not have quite as high of a ceiling. Justin Smoak and Yonder Alonso will probably be gone by the time the Cubs pick at 19, but here's a short list of potential 1Bs who should be available for the Cubs at 19 or later... Brett Wallace Ike Davis David Cooper Jeff Decker Allan Dykstra Jeremy Hamilton Chase Davidson Shane Peterson Ricky Oropesa Nate Recknagle Conor Gillaspie The money the Cubs could spend on Hosmer would, quite frankly, be better spent elsewhere. This isn't like last year or the year before for me where I have my heart set on one guy. I'd like to see Shooter Hunt fall into the Cubs' laps, but I doubt that happens. The realistic guy I'd like to see the Cubs tab at this point is Jake Odorizzi, but we'll see.
  9. Looks like it's time to put down another one of Dusty's horses.
  10. Mayo has a new mock up. It doesn't look like much has changed since his last go-round for the Cubs.
  11. So-so. He's good enough to be picked in the Top 10, but his contract demands are supposed to be enormously steep.
  12. I think a large part of the problem is the fact that the two primary Latin American markets (Venezuela and the Dominican Republic) have become so over-saturated with other teams that it has become very difficult to not only unearth easy to sign top prospects, but also that the price of those prospects have skyrocketed. The Pacific Rim, on the other hand, has fewer teams competing for a larger number of prospects. Granted, the quality is not quite as refined, but there are definitely good players to be had. The Cubs were able to sign two of the top Australian pitching prospects in Cody Hams and Ryan Searle. They also got Hung-Wen Chen and Dae-Eun Rhee. I have a hard time believing they would be able to get prospects of equivalent caliber out of Latin America at a comparable price.
  13. Sutcliffe will be singing the stretch. I get the feeling he won't quite fill Lasorda's shoes.
  14. In the first inning, the umpire got visibly pissed off at the Cubs' dugout, to the point he took off his mask and told them to "Shut the hell up!" The camera showed the Cubs dugout and everyone in there was laughing about it. Did Lou say anything about that in the post-game press conference? What happened?
  15. The best he can hope for right now is becoming a version of Fukudome with worse defense and being stuck in LF. However, it's questionable whether he will ever develop enough power to fill that role. His OBP will always be good, but if that's all he can hang hit hat on, it will be hard seeing him as more than a good 4th OF/decent LF. If that's the case, it's difficult to imagine him getting regular playing time over Fukudome and Soriano, much less DeRosa, Ward, Hoffpauir, and Reed Johnson. I'm rooting for the guy to succeed, but I have trouble seeing it happen on this team as it is currently composed.
  16. Think ESPN will torment us with Boomer/Sutcliffe Redux for this one?
  17. I get the feeling the Cubs think Howry and Eyre might be gone after this season. They've got a handful of guys in the high minors who can step in for Howry (with Wuertz or a FA presumably taking over the 7th inning role) and a couple of lefties who could take over Eyre's role. They might be able to re-sign either of those two, but, frankly, Howry will be 35 and Eyre will be 36 by season's end. I don't think retaining either would be a bright idea. Just hope they get favorable FA designations and some team is dumb enough to sign them. :D
  18. Marshall and Hill going down with injuries could be the best thing to happen to Gallagher. It pretty much ensures he'll be up here for another few weeks while those guys work out their injuries and also attempt to get back in the good graces of the Cubs. I'm also curious as to whether he suffered any ill effects from the comebacker off his pitching hand in the first. It looked like his velocity was down after that happened. Moreover, considering he threw 111 pitches in freaking cold weather, that might be a bit of a concern in his next few starts. With that out of that way, I've said this a number of times so far about Gallagher. The best projections for him have him as a #2/#3, but that's down the line. He needs to learn how to effectively attack major league hitters and how to get by on days when he doesn't have his best stuff. That will come with time and experience. Perhaps he might be as effective this season as, say, Jason Marquis or Jon Lieber, but this experience is enormously important for him. I'd rather see him get this experience now while he has the opportunity. It should pay dividends for the Cubs over the next few years, considering he will get this experience and the Cubs will have a much clearer picture of just how good he can be.

  20. For the second day in a row, none of the Cubs' minor league teams lost.
  21. For Indianapolis: Neil Walker, Andrew McCutchen, Steven Pearce For Ottawa: JA Happ and Jason Jaramillo McCutchen is probably one of the top 20 prospects in baseball right now.
  22. Oddly enough, he's on pace to strike out more times this season than last season.
  23. They'll probably trade off their contract year guys, flukey guys they can sell high on, and low floor/high ceiling types who haven't been producing for them. I don't think they'll trade off their big names and prospects.
