  1. There was speculation based on a Cubs' area scout's Twitter that the Cubs may have interest in a handful of HS guys who are still available: RHP Carson Wiggins (Jaxon's brother), RHP/1B Eli Buxton, LHP Alex Grant, and OF Eli Lovich. Wiggins is the highest rated of that group, as some of us wanted him with the Cubs' 2nd round pick, although my guess is the Cubs will have trouble meeting his asking price.
  2. They were picking mid-round without any extra picks in what has generally been seen as a mediocre draft overall. I didn't come into today with high hopes, but I actually didn't mind that they targeted EVs and swing speed guys, since this system hasn't exactly been great at churning out power bats, It's possible they pop someone like Wiggins or Franco tomorrow to spice things up, but we'll see.
  3. Nah, that's Cobb Hightower. He comes from the family that lives at the tallest point of the Shire.
  4. Fenwick Trimble sounds like the name of the villain in a teen rom-com about an evil corporation trying to shut down a beloved ski resort in small town Colorado.
  5. I agree whole-heartedly; getting him and Tibbs would be a fantastic outcome for a team with only one pick in the Top 100. I'm just curious to see how they make it work.
  6. Dakota Jordan to SF. They didn't have any picks between 13 and now, so, uh, good luck signing him I guess.
  7. So what do we think, slot for Cam Smith and ~200k underslot for Mathis? Curious to see who makes it to the third round. Carson Wiggins is still on the board, along with Dax Whitney.
  8. I (kinda) get it. LSU has a fantastic program with a long track record, plus the NIL money will offset any immediate losses if he's not getting Top 20 money. Not saying I agree, but I understand.
  9. Guess they're over the hump. If this game were in May or June, the winning run would be at the plate right now.
  10. I've had a soft spot for Brecht for awhile, and he makes for an intriguing underslot candidate, but he brings a lot of risk to the table as a guy with command/control issues, an undeveloped third pitch, and also coming from a program that's not known for developing and producing high end pitchers. Iowa also apparently mucked with his mechanics, meaning he's basically a teardown/rebuild type. You run a very real risk that he never makes the majors. I'd be excited if the Cubs took him, but he's got a ton of work to do.
  11. We're entering my favorite part of MLB Draft season. It feels like the last day or two before the draft, you finally start to get concrete news about things like what teams are cutting deals (underslot or overslot), which guys are getting taken off the board due to commitments/demands, and also last minute risers/fallers coming out of team workouts and interviews.
  12. The guy in the wheelchair who's been left for dead decided to get up and dance a jig.
  13. Remember when the Nick Madrigal experiment at 3B was initially derided because the knock on him was a noodle arm? The Cubs clearly have something in place to assist with that, given that Madrigal's arm improved enough to make him a decent 3B. Plus, it might not be an arm strength issue so much as it's a technique issue. Even then, MLB has had its share of success stories of catchers who sucked at throwing out runners.
  14. Vitters was at least defensible at the time, as there was a lot of chatter about whether he or Moustakas was the top HS bat and both were projected as Top 5 picks. He didn't live up to the hype in any meaningful way, although I remember he had awful injury/health luck in the minors; I want to say an extended bout of mono and a broken wrist from a HPB? The more baffling pick that year was actually immediately after the Cubs, when the Pirates took Moskos, who was generally seen as a mid to late 1st rounder, when they had their proverbial pick of the litter.
  15. The funniest part about the draft thread was watching everyone post-Simpson pick immediately divide into two camps, with one side flipping out over the team being cheap tightwads who couldn't be bothered to pony up for an overslot like Zach Lee, and the other side, well: And then the second round came up...Reggie Golden: And then, after it became obvious Matt Szczur would be the only meaningful overslot pick: Cripes, that draft was depressing.
  16. I vividly remember waiting for the bus at North and Clybourne while following the 2010 MLB Draft on my phone (I think through MLB's or BA's website). The Cubs' pick came up, and I remember dreading the possibility of Alex Wimmers. The site froze for what felt like 15 minutes until Hayden Simpson's name finally came up, with no links or information beyond position and college. All I could do was laugh. I just tried digging up NSBB's 2010 MLB Draft thread, but sadly it seems to have been lost to the ages. That was an all-time doom scrolling thread. It was as if everyone's dogs had just been put down because the vet bills were too expensive.
  17. This might come across as a tad bit callous, but there's something oddly comforting reading an article like this and realizing that most of the pitchers' struggles can be chalked up to injury, rather than lack of development. Don't get me wrong, it sucks that we haven't seen fully healthy versions of Killian, et al. this season, but this is significantly better than the bad ol' days of guys like Mark Pawelek and Hayden Simpson just flat-out sucking.
