    I don't understand why people bring up, "He won't win you the big one" when talking about Huggins' hire at KSU. To me, if you say that then you don't get it. KSU b-ball, right now, just wants an upper-tier Big 12 program. They could make the NCAA tourney for the next five years and lose in the first round every year and Huggins' job would be very safe. This isn't UConn, Duke, KU, UCLA, UNC, it's Kansas State. I think it's a good hire for a program wanting to be contenders. Also, Cincinnati, from what I understand, is pretty much a commuter school, so you probably won't get the best student/athletes, anyway. Hence, the number of JUCO player Huggins had to get. It's funny how one DUI conviction can make a guy an instant dirtbag. Wonder if you'd have the same opinion if Mark Prior, Derrek Lee, Matt Murton or Kerry Wood had a DUI? And Manhattan, KS is not a thriving metropolis, but they haven't had problems recruiting in football so I don't think it'll be much different in basketball. The first thing was to get a head coach with name recognition. The best thing is this hire kind of puts Mizzou behind the eight-ball. I hope K-State and every other Big 12 school crushes Mizzou (no offense to TT and the other Mizzou students on here).

    Are some of you giving Hendry props for valuing OBP only a "little bit"? To me, there's a very fine line between valuing OBP a little and not at all. I would love to have a GM and manager who value OBP a lot. And help me understand how acquiring all-stars , or ,in some instances, potential all-stars is evidence that he values OBP? I'll believe that he really values OBP when I quit hearing him use the term "toolsy."

    Good. Now, get to work on the rest of the city. PLEASE! No tax base... Having lived ten years in St. Louis, I think St. Louis is a poorly run city. It has a low tax base, but with the 1%city earnings tax and the high entertainment and events (including sporting teams) taxes, St. Louis shouldn't be what it currently is. They told people the dome/convention center would bring back downtown.... thus far it hasn't. Now they say the ballpark village will bring back downtown -- we'll see. I'm still trying to figure out who's going to purchase the lofts being built downtown. It would be hard for single people to purchase them and families are more likely to move to the county or the Illinois side.

    Although I criticize Baker for a lot of things, I do think some things he gets criticized might be overblown. In SF, he was criticized for playing vets even though they had no real good young, talented position players. Since Baker's been gone, they still haven't any good, young position players. In Chicago, Murton, Patterson and Choi are the only young guys I was enamored with. I remember when fans were mad because Baker wouldn't sit Patterson at times last year or during a slump he had in 2004. I think a lot of us hyped up our young prospects who just may not be that good (see Kelton, Dubois, Choi, Jackson). One of the main reasons I like Murton is because he's not a product of the Cubs farm system. I am looking forward to seeing Cedeno this year,too. I can say this seems to be the only year where Baker got the team that he wanted, one with speed, a lead-off guy and a good bullpen. He seems to have no excuses this year. In the past, I gave him the benefit of the doubt because of the crappy roster he had to work with. But let's not pretend that he's just been an "unlucky" manager. He's made some pretty awful decisions in the past.

    Exactly why I'm glad I get two different games. Also, the KC affiliate has the Illinois game scheduled tonight, while the Topeka, KS affiliate will be showing the Gonzaga/Xavier game at that time. Is it a safe bet that Duke will be playing the nationally televised Saturday (12 ET) on Saturday. It seems they are always playing the first Saturday game. They're finally ready to tip in San Diego.

    I talked myself into picking Oklahoma to the Sweet 16 even though all year I've been saying how bad I thought the Big 12 was. Stupid me. #-o

    For the first (and probably only) time I can say I love living in Topeka, KS. The CBS affiliate here shows one game, and the Kansas City affiliate shows another. Today is a good day.

How are they going to stop Gray and Bookout with only one guy over 6-7 averaging double digit minutes? I don't know, how'd they stop Dudley and Smith for BC last year? Doing deep analysis for things only ends up causing me to out-think myself. They didn't, Dudley and Smith scored 47 points. Big difference is that UW-M's offense isn't nearly as good as last year's model. Your convincing analysis cost me a point. Don't be so convincing if you're going to be wrong! :) Making an analysis in a one-game playoff can be a waste of time. And Pacific goes up on BC. Take that Billy Packer and Jim Nantz.

How are they going to stop Gray and Bookout with only one guy over 6-7 averaging double digit minutes? I'm somewhat surprised that more people aren't riding the Bucknell bandwagon. I like them, but they don't fit your criteria(they're a 9), and playing Arkansas in Dallas is a very bad draw. Arkansas has the personnel to neutralize them, plus the home crowd is a bad combination, even before they get to the number 1 seed. In fact, I may consider putting Arkansas in the Sweet 16 now that I think of it. I was speaking of Bucknell just in general terms, not as a double didit seed. By the way, Wichita St. is a seven seed. I have Arkansas beating Memphis but losing to Pitt.

    if you have a guy with a checkered past like wood, why would you ride him so hard in 2003? In my opinion, ridden hard in 2003 or not, he would still have arm problems. I just think the damage had already been done. If Wood was an Astro or Cardinal, would you still believe he could come back and be relatively injury-free or is it the Cub fan in us that makes us believe there's still hope in him? I know if he didn't pitch for the Cubs I'd think he was done.

    I absolutely understand the criticism Baker gets for the abuse of Prior and Zambrano, especially since I'm one of the critics. However, I don't fully understand throwing Wood in the mix when it comes to the discussion. I've said it lots of times before, but I believe Wood's arm troubles are beyond permanent fix, to which I don't think Baker had anything to do with. I think Wood was brought back too soon after the 1999 surgery, and he got hurt the latter part of 2001, which hurt our division and wild card chances. I think he missed four starts in August of 2001. I think his misuse in high school, the minors and at the major league level, and add that to his poor mechanics and that's why he seems to be constantly hurt. Prior is a different story, in my opinion.

    I think an investment in a good bullpen would help end high pitch counts.

    I think everyone is aware that there are several factors that can cause injury to a pitcher. However, if it's within your power as a manager to control one of those factors (pitch counts), don't you think it makes sense to do so? Of course, I do. But explain what the magic pitch count number is and is it the same for everyone? If not, how do you set one number on pitcher A and another on pitcher B? As I said above I believe pitch counts is a good indicator but not the only one. Can anyone say that Wood and Prior would be okay if they only threw 102 pitches each start? I personally think they both came back too quick and that was a bigger factor.

    I believe pitch counts can be a factor in determining the likelihood of a pitcher having arm problems. However, I hate it when some imply that that is the only strict indicator. There have been lots of pitchers in baseball who never had recurring arm problems even though they threw lots of pitches. On the flip side, there have been pitchers who pretty much threw with low pitch counts who got hurt (Jon Lieber). It seems some people should at least bring up issues such as the violent arm motion, some physiological differences in pitchers, years of bad mechanics or even possible steroid use in the past/present when trying to figure out why some guys get hurt.

    For me, it's the latter. Musberger tends to be a homer when it comes to Illinois, even though I believe he went to Northwestern. Unfortunately, I don't think Illinois will go to the Final Four. That would require Illinois to play four straight good games against good teams - something I haven't seen them do all year. I do see only one #1 seed getting to Indianapolis.

    I agree with you to a point. The "whining" you hear is unwarranted for the most part. The analysts have to fill time so I think that's part of it, and then you know fans somehow think that the higher the seed, somehow that automatically makes you a final four candidate. People seem to forget that just about every year, only 10 or so teams have a realistic chance of winning the national championship. I guess it comes down to who would you rather give the 1 in 100,000 chance to, Northern Iowa or Cincinnati. In my opinion, give the little guys a shot. As for college football, yeah, you'd hear whining from people as to why the ninth team didn't get in (on an 8-team tourney). But I, too, would still like to see one.

    I am no longer interested in the 2nd base soap-opera. I don't want Perez starting anywhere; and as I said this time last season, Hairston isn't all that impressive. Anybody who can't statistically dominate Perez offensively shouldn't even be considered a starting second baseman on this team. As for Walker, I no longer wish to have a starter who seems to speak out of both sides of his mouth.

    I haven't looked at spring stats yet, but if neither Todd Walker nor Jerry Hairston, Jr. can't statistically demolish Neifi then neither one of them deserves to start. Give it to Theriot. :D

The consensus is that IU would have to make him their top and only real candidate and offer him the job without any interview process. In that case I think he would take it, but I just don't think IU is sold on him enough to handle it that way. . This may or may not make you happy, but I was at a meeting with some guys from Indianapolis last week and they seem to believe Randy Wittman will be the next Indiana coach. The Randy Wittman bandwagon is gaining steam. I still think it's 50-50 on Alford being the next coach. If not him I suspect Wittman, Crean, Majerus, Dakich, and Keith Smart will be considered heavily. Man, it's amazing to me that people still throw out Majerus' name. Some crazy Mizzou alumni friends of mine want him to be their head coach. I would have to have him go through at minimum 50 physicals before I would even interview him let alone hire him.

    So, in your estimation (and I'm playing what if) if Syracuse wins the Big East tourney, what seed did they play themselves into by improving their resume? If they were an 8-9 by beating UConn, how high do you raise them for winning two more games? Or do you? It's a relatively subjective process to begin with and, to me, these four days just makes it even more subjective. I at least like how committees in the past put a lot of emphasis on how you did in the last ten games leading up to the conference tourneys, because as you and I have said before, many teams don't have much to play for and are playing teams on life support.

    I think it will be a good and low-scoring game. What's the word out of Iowa City as it relates to Alford and the IU opening?
