  1. Towards the beginning of this thread, there was some discussion concerning Cuba's drug testing policy and had some correlating stats. A 26 year old coming out of that league gives me doubt. With the direction we're headed, I'm feeling better safe than sorry about Cespedes. Soler would make me happy.
  2. The Braves were on a national stage daily on TBS.
  3. Wall Street Journal commercial on tv: "People are wondering why baseball is paying so much to fat guys".
  4. Tim Curley was his supervisor, Joe reported to him. Gary Schultz was in charge of the campus police, Joe reported to him, too. But why worry about facts? Also, McQueary testified that he never told Joe that he saw a child raped (in fact, he never told anyone that he saw a rape). He told Joe he saw something inappropriate. Im not sure why people can't see the possibility that Paterno (who wasn't a witness) held out hope that what McQueary saw was a mistake, and that by reporting it to the AD and campus police they would handle it appropriately. But yeah, I can see how it makes sense that a guy who wanted to orchestrate a massive coverup would choose to tell his boss and the head of police all about it. I understand your logic here...if we were talking about underage drinking or drugs.
  5. Is there anywhere I can find a depth chart for our prospects?
  6. I just spent a couple grand buying Castro rookie cards. :banghead:
  7. Good ole boy network.
  8. I'm sure being in the Newspaper business had nothing to do with that. There's probably a way to miss the point by a wider margin than you did, but I'm struggling to identify it. Educate me please. I wish i had the last 20 seconds of my life back. I still don't get it, I must be having one of those days haha. My point was the Cubs had nothing to do with the Trib going bankrupt. Must have missed the right off stuff, I'll go back to the bench now.

  10. If someone's just looking for profit, there are much much better ways than a sports franchise. They do make money, but for these mega-rich guys, owning a team is more a bucket list type thing. Bucket list type things are sailing to Tahiti, owning a sports franchise may be an ego thing, but it's extremely profitable. The Cubs were sold to the Tribune Co. in 1981 for $20.5 million and then sold to Ricketts for $900 million in 2009. If you know a better way to make that much profit, let me know. Some of the worst owners in sports end up selling for a lot more than they paid for a franchise. Yet the Trib went bankrupt. You'd think with their investment expertise, they could have avoided such a fate. I'm sure being in the Newspaper business had nothing to do with that.
  11. My wife was freezing and bit the bullet. Like I said, prices were not family friendly. They made a ton on Cool weather gear.
  12. It did come in a very nice "made in China" World series travel mug!
  13. I just went at 70% of a 40,000 person crowd drinking 1.5 beers each. Very likely an overestimate. I don't think you're off that much. Attendance would be in the 47K range @ Busch. If 1 of every 3 is drinking, and they're having 2 beers each, that's 31,000. I was at game six. My wife and I spent: 2 hot dogs at 7.50 each 2 Cokes at 5.50 each 2 Nachos at 7.50 each and 2 hot chocolates at 12.50 each 1 water at 5.00 Beers were 8.50 each, Budweiser of course. Lot's of beer sales, much more than normal games. Cardinal fans were kind of jerks, but they had a great time. Lot's of Texas money too. Sweatshirts, jackets, anything with a World Series logo flew off the shelves. The guy I got my tickets from tried getting a $20 World Series ticket lanyard at all 7 games, they were sold out the second they would hit the shelves, he never got one. Prices were not family friendly. Ownership is probably still counting the money.
  14. In the last decade, the White Sox have won a World Series, not to mention the Cardinals have added yet another trophy to their case. Of course, we're sitting here having the same worn out conversation. Technology allows me to follow any and all teams now. The Indians are fun to watch right now.
  15. Since you need it spelled out for you, the theory has long been that Wrigley insulates the Cubs from the sort of performance-based attendance cycles you're describing. If that's not so true anymore, it's a story. It's a story. I don't know where the obstinance originates. I don't think one data point early in the season means a whole lot, but I suspect if the Cubs are sub .500 come May there will be plenty of games like yesterday. That's why it's not a story. Who here honestly thought that the Cubs would been drawing near-capacity crowds if they had or with the promise of another mediocre (or worse) year? it's a story because the Cubs coasted through several terrible seasons in the 00's without a noticeable drop in ticket sales. the story is that the sales are finally catching up to the quality of the product I concur. Is it also possible, the fan base is shrinking on a national scale? The deal with WGN sure isn't what it used to be.
  16. Gonna play a 6 team 5x5 this year. C - Matt Weiters 1B - Albert Pujols 2B - Ian Kinsler 3B - Jose Batista SS - Alexei Ramirez OF - Carl Crawford OF - Matt Kemp OF - Shin Soo Choo OF - Andre Ethier UT - Hunter Pence UT - Starlin Castro BN - Chase Utley BN - Stephen Drew BN - Brian Roberts SP - Felix Hernandez SP - Clayton Kershaw SP - Yovanni Gallardo SP - Matt Cain RP - Jokim Soria RP - Jonathan Broxtan P - Tommy Hanson P - Max Sherzer P - Brett Anderson P - Houston Street Stacked lineup, but the other teams are as well. Need to fix my bench.
  17. A career year for Theriot will be an OPS of .750 while having no range at SS. I'm not worried about it. Theriot has holes in his game, but if he hits in front of Pujols, I kinda like it. Well, I don't like it...but he could be a pain in the butt and have a pretty good year.
  18. Don King ruined boxing - that doesn't make me racist does it? Boxing has gone the way of old tyme baseball - it's done. Give me MMA over Boxing anyday.
  19. But wait, hes a clubhouse cancer, and all his teammates hated him I thought?................. Maybe he got along with Fox. Then again it might not look good for a fringe player to badmouth a team mate the day after being traded. Im pretty sure the majority of Bradley's ex-teammates normally have very good things to say of him as a teammate. I think he is generally very well liked in the clubhouse. Exactly. I'm having trouble thinking of any teammate situations. I guess he has had some issues with Lou, but I tend to give Bradley the benifit of the doubt there. Now if you want to talk about Bradleys relationship with fans and media, I have a "few" examples coming to mind.
  20. The Cubs are a lot closer to a championship than you give them credit for. They had one of the top pitching staff's in the league last year, and suffered from abysmal production from an offense that looked pretty good on paper before the season started. This isn't the time for a complete overhaul or an owner with a jumpy trigger finger. Especially considering the number of dollars the Cubs are committed to. I'm interested to see what Hendry will be able to do this off season, with his job on the line. We have a pretty good team on paper. Listening to the NPR interview, player development is where a lot of the focus is going to go. Ricketts said free agency is to fill holes that you can't develop. I like this as a long term plan, but I don't get the feeling we'll see any major moves this offseason.
  21. So you don't want us to use stats that prove you wrong? Pretty much. Can't anything be said for benching a player that (obviously) did not bring his best effort this year? Is that not a good example to set for a (supposedly) winning franchise? How do you know he didn't bring his best effort this year? Showing up to camp overweight might be a good place to start? :hello:
  22. Of course it was a Southern Illinois redneck, oh high and mighty one. I had a blast on Sunday, glad I missed the other two games. Late in the game, I had a Card fan yelling at me, he kept asking if I was from Chicago. I just smiled, but he kept talking [expletive]. He was a tough guy till I jacked his ass up outside the stadium. Wife is still giving me the cold shoulder.
  23. I watched all but five games last season, love my DVR. The playoffs went poof. I could care less how many games Bradley plays this season, as long as he's there for the end. He doesn't need to carry this team, and I think he complements the lineup very well.
  24. On Dish, I've got WGN, Comcast - Chicago and St. Louis in HD. They just added local networks to HD this past week. Love it, but I don't get MLB TV.
