  1. Been watching the Royals-A's games the past couple of days, and just thought I'd say that Cespedes looks AWFUL when swinging at off-speed pitches. Pretty brutal stuff. Not to say he won't fix that hiccup in his swing, and I still wish the Cubs had signed him to his contract, but he is going to need to fix that.
  2. I remember at the start of the off-season that most people on the board were excited because we had a great shot at signing Pujols. That didn't happen, but it was okay because we would sign Fielder and the Cubans. That didn't happen, but we still had the Cubans. Then we didn't sign Cespedes, but still some of the board was okay with it because, hey, we can still get Soler! The complacency with which people treat free agency, no matter what happens, is astounding.
  3. Wait, he still thinks he knows anything about this?

  5. This is good news. Despite me not agreeing with much this off-season, everything will be fine as long as we are pretty much a .500 team in 2013. That should mean we are competing in 2014. Soler should hopefully be helping the end of 2013 and all of 2014.
  6. We may not have a Yankees budget, but we're not the frikkin' Royals either. We can afford a lot of these contracts that have been labeled as horrible. I seriously doubt the Angels are going to crippled in a couple of years because of their contracts. Same for the Tigers. The Cubs should be close to the same payroll as these two teams. Edit: If we are dropping the payroll a significant amount for a lengthy period of time then that above is not true. But most of what I've heard was that wasn't supposed to be the case.
  7. Shocker! Cubs actually offered money! Can the choir of "we want our toys" folks calm down now? Seriously people, all you people who want the Cubs to actually acquire baseball players are nothing but pie in the sky choir boys. Who needs baseball players? This is kind of what I'm thinking. It's not so much about Cespedes, but everybody that signs with someone else was always a bad contract and Cubs would have been ridiculous to offer it. Or there was no way we were going to sign them because they didn't want to come here. Or something. I don't know if there is ever going to be the perfect free agent signing and so waiting for it to happen is going to be a long process. I understand we need to rebuild, but you can also be somewhat competitive in the meantime.
  8. Kind of wondering what a portion of the board thinks now that Cespedes is off the boards. Quite a few people said that they didn't mind missing out on either Pujols or Fielder as long as we signed the Cubans. One Cuban is now off the board.
  9. Does everyone who battles an addiction have to do it under the spotlight of news organizations pointing out each slip up? When you author a book, detailing your triumph over addiction, are not you at least partly responsible for part of that spotlight? http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Belief-Finding-Strength-Come/dp/1599951614 At least he can write part II now. Most addicts would kill to have Hamilton's success rate if it's truly been 2 relapses in 3 years and they were just a one night drinking binge. So yeah, he might have some knowledge about his addiction that some people would want to have.
  10. You do realize that one of the major factors in Christianity is forgiveness after sin? Finding God doesn't mean you don't ever screw up again. You could say the same thing with AA. Going to AA doesn't mean you can't relapse, and if you do, it doesn't show that AA is just a big fraud.
  11. Hope he figures out what happened and gets a handle on it. Sucks.
  12. Crazy last minute.
  13. Yeah, if there's anything I hate it's too many offensive rebounds. Don't be an ass. If you saw that sequence you know what I meant. I saw it. It's a goofy thing to complain about. That's not complaining.

  15. How many offensive rebounds does it take for the Bulls to score? O/U 3.5
  16. I'll readily admit I don't know near as much about basketball as I do baseball.... BUT BOOZER IS TERRIBLE! I don't know how to back that up, but I'm pretty sure it's accurate.
  17. Which radio personality? EDIT: Nevermind, found that it's Nick Wright. Off-topic, but I love Nick Wright. He hates Pioli something fierce though. He never misses a chance to bag on him. That's not why I love him though, he's just a fun guy to listen to since he gets so riled up. Oh, and then there was the fact that he wanted the Royals to trade Mike Moustakas for Randy Wolf last year because we needed some pitching. He's not very good at baseball stuff. :)
  18. It pretty clearly involves more skill. You can get your foot in the door (so to speak) with raw athleticism in sports like football and basketball, but baseball requires a strong skill base that has to be built up over age (with rare exception). What's the saying? The hardest thing in sports is to hit a 95 MPH fastball or something? Don't know if it's true, but wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it was. Hitting a round ball with a round bat solidly I think is absolutely the hardest "basic element" of any major pro sport. People across the world can make the same shot Kobe makes using the same size ball and the same size hoop.* But how many can hit an 85mph pitch? Very few. *I get why the comparison to what Kobe does on an NBA court and what we do in pickup games is faulty... I like to believe this as well. I was a fairly good baseball player. I sucked the big one at basketball. Never tried football.

  20. I'm aware, but nothing is going to be a cure all. Expecting baseball to do a ton more is pretty noble, but crazy. They're businesses and it makes a lot more sense for them to set up baseball academies in other countries. I'm not sure how anyone can change that? Uh, what? It's MLB that really wants to get these kids into baseball because it's good for their business. They're missing out on a ton of amazing athletes that they want playing baseball. I have no idea why you're acting like this is something that MLB is being forced or pressured to do; they WANT to do it. I know they want to do it, I'm just not sure what they can really do? And the basketball thing is just a peeve of mine. I'm not sure why the NBA isn't blasted more for not marketing it's white stars more. For example, how many people know Kevin Love is one of the best players in the world? That's probably more to do with where he is playing. Put him on the Lakers, Celtics, or the Knicks and people would be all over his jock.

I have no idea why you're acting like this is something that MLB is being forced or pressured to do; they WANT to do it. Of course, if they really wanted the amazing talent then they probably wouldn't have adopted the new CBA where teams can't offer the players 7-10 million to get them to sign with the club. So I'm guessing a lot of them are going to stick with football or basketball.
  22. I agree, but thought black kids found baseball boring and that was more why they were avoiding baseball. I don't think that is only for black kids though. When I was growing up in a small town in Kansas all we had for baseball was a summer rec. league. Whenever there was a basketball training camp or football camp all the kids would no-show an actual baseball games to go practice basketball or football. It didn't make much sense to me then and still doesn't now, but that's because I love baseball. It took me awhile to realize that most people just find baseball horribly boring. Basketball and football feel like it's constant action.
  23. No, because nobody is worried about that. Why? What's the difference? Because other than a few outliers like Steve Nash, watching white people play basketball is boring. Oh so just because you're racist you're ok with it? Ok. Kind of an interesting topic to me. Maybe not to anyone else, but I'd like to see a debate on this. Get to it, guys. Oh, and is the general consensus that the reason there are so few African-American baseball players is because the equipment is so expensive and they have poor playing conditions on their fields? Or because, on average, these boys grow up enjoying basketball far more than baseball? If it's the latter, why is it an issue?
  24. Reds signed LHP Jeff Francis to a minor league contract. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported less than 15 minutes ago that the deal was "close," and now CBS Sports' Jon Heyman is saying it's official. Francis will get a shot at cracking the Reds' starting rotation this spring in major league camp. He posted a disappointing 4.82 ERA and 91/39 K/BB ratio in 183 innings last season for the Rockies, but minor league deals are free of risk. If it doesn't work out, Cincy can simply cast him aside. http://www.rotoworld.com Kind of surprised he signed a minor league contract. Quite a bit of talk about him on Rotoworld this off-season so I figured he'd get at least 2 million or so. Decent filler or injury replacement for Cincy.
