    They're rushing Hill. I guess he had nothing left to prove in AA, but the quick cup of coffee in Chicago was dumb. I hope it doesn't put Rich in the wrong frame of mind, I can't believe the Cubs really expect anything from Hill before 2006. Oneira should tell him you're here in Des Moines until September, then the Cubs will bring you in with the September call-ups. Instead, maybe he's thinking if I just have a good game tonite in front of this scout, if I strike out a couple more batters, maybe I get back to the bigs.....wrong attitude for Hill.

    Let go by the Phillies, let's bring him back, he can be a useful middle reliever. Dump Remlinger to the Yankees or Rangers for a prospect to clear out the spot.

    Encarnacion is a bit player, this is exactly the kind of move I DON'T want Hendry to be making. Either be a seller and set up for next year, or make the monster deal for an impact player. Don't go in-between though, that's a sure recipe for disappointment. Just say no to Juan, and Preston, and Kotsay et al.

    If the Sox were to trade say, McCarthy, Marte and a mid-level prospect, I'd take that chance if I were Kenny Williams. Schmidt looks spent so far this year, true, but his upside if he gets perfectly healthy is so high...this is the kind of high-risk, high-reward trade the Sox need to make if they want to be equal players with the Cubs in the Chicago market. With their great first half, it would take a complete meltdown for the Sox not to make the playoffs, and such opportunities are so rare for them that they need to capitalize and give themselves every chance they can to finish the job. Forget the future: were I a Sox guy, I'd say go for it. This looks to be their year. In a short series playoff, throwing Buerhle, Garland, Schmidt and Garcia out there would be just plain filthy. Wow.

    I'm with you, I was calling for the Cubs to be sellers and see what the young kids can offer a month and a half ago. It's not being overly pessimistic as I see it, it's being realistic. This is not a World Series competitive ballclub. Why not set the team up so they CAN be a legitimate World Series contender next year? Shoot, we've waited four generations, I think we can wait one more year. What I DON'T want to see happen are desperation buyer moves by Hendry that only marginally improve the team in a weak attempt at limping into a wild card spot. I'd take 500 this year and 100 wins next year over 85-88 wins this year and next, all day long. Move any or all of Patterson, Remlinger, Rusch, Mitre, Wellemeyer, Dubois, Perez, Walker, Hairston; all should have some value to contenders. See what Cedeno can do if allowed to play full-time. Get Fontenot up here and see if he can be the 2006 2B. And down on the farm, I don't see why Murton isn't at Iowa, we need to know if he can be a piece to the 2006 puzzle, let's get him moving forward in the organization. And of course it goes without saying, fire Baker.

    Being a lefty, I'm hoping Piggy keeps up the good work, he'll have trade value. He's already past Rohlicek and Koronka IMO. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a throw-in in a trade with a team desperate for pitching, like the Reds or Phils. Unfortunately, Wellemeyer and Leicester, two other prime trade bait pitchers, are doing nothing to help us here. Ice in particular, I'm very disappointed in him this year, don't know what the problem is there.

    With Lee finally coming back down to earth, does everyone see how hopeless our team is now? The guy literally carried this team to 500 on his own for three months, he's bound to cool off, and then to pick up the slack we have.......waiting........???? Patterson and Perez 1-2, that's great. And the Superstar Jeromy Burnitz as our cleanup hitter! This team is going nowhere--fast. 80-82.

    Um, no thanks on either one, if I must have a veteran in the bullpen (and I do not believe I do), I'd stick with Remlinger first. What's to like about these two? Both appear washed up: Quantill is 36 yo, has a 6.75 ERA, 1.72 WHIP, and BAA of .361. Yikes. Hardly an anomaly either; last year, he posted a lousy 4.72/1.51/.316 for the same three numbers. See ya. Mike Stanton is 38 yo, his line so far this year is 7.07/1.64/.298. Wow. As a pure LOOGY, it isn't nearly so bad: 0.93 WHIP, .176 BAA. However, the sample size is very small here, he has just 14 IP on the season. Was he hurt and missed some time? Don't know. Here is one thing to consider I guess. We know how Dustbag misuses Remlinger. It's darn near criminal. Would you swap Remlinger for Stanton and a minor leaguer? Stanton could be a pure LOOGY like we need, and the Cubs would save some money (I think Stanton makes $1.5MM, though I could be wrong; Remlinger makes $4MM). But Quantrill, definitely no interest.

    I will take Wilson if it's a pure salary dump on Colorado's part and we part with nothing of significance. To me, that means Wellemeyer is the absolute most I'd give up. No way, no how do I move Cedeno for a stiff like Wilson. Ronny might be (emphasis on the word might) our SS for the next ten years. You can't trade away that kind of option value on someone like Preston Wilson. Now, if moving Cedeno means you can snag an Adam Dunn or Ichiro, that is a different matter. Ronny is not untouchable. He's a classic case of sell high, I'd let him go in the right deal. But not for Wilson. No. NO!!!!!!

    If we could get Dunn for Mitre and Wellemeyer, I'd definitely do it in a second, but I think the Reds would want someone else as well, probably Dubois. Man, that's laughable. Of course I'd do this deal. They want more pitching, no problem. Nolasco, Ryu, Guzman, Van Buren, Leicester, Wuertz, Brownlie, Pinto take your pick. The only pitchers at AA or higher I don't trade away are Hill, Aardsma and Marshall. Lee, Dunn and Aramis 3-4-5 is just sick, wow.

    Only if it's followed by a trade for a significant bat in LF (which would likely include Patterson). I don't see how Mark Kotsay alone solves our offensive problems. If you are going to play him in LF, why not just put Hairston out there? No no, you inferred correctly the first time, Kotsay is just one of two new OF-ers I want. I put him in CF and go get a bat for LF (Huff? Mench? Kearns?) I like Kotsay's defense, I like his attitude (always plays HARD), he has some speed, he makes contact. He's not a power hitter, big deal, neither is Patterson really. But I want Kotsay's 60 points better OBP and 100 points better OPS in my lineup. I bat him leadoff of course, and put Walker right behind him. What would it cost? Dunno, hard to say what Beane is looking for. Yankees would offer any or all of their three semi-marketable, semi-prospects (Cano, Duncan and Wang). Red Sox could dangle Youkilis (who'd likely interest Beane, but where would he play with Chavez at 3B?) and then what? They've consistently said Hanley Ramirez is untouchable. Then there's us. I put a pool of 5 nice prospects in front of Beane and tell him to pick any two he wants. These would be our good, but not premier prospects--things like Hill, and Sing, and Craig, and Ryu etc...Then see what happens.

    The negative thing about this ridiculous signing from our perspective is that it makes it unlikely Wade feels pressure to cut payroll anytime soon. So the "Wagner in salary dump" trade ideas are pretty much kaput--I mean, if you can afford to pay $8MM to Jimmy freaking Rollins, I think you can afford $9MM to Billy Wagner, no??

    Sosa's money definitely counts against 2005, not 2006. The terms of the buyout explicitly stated the money was due immediately (as well as his severance pay) if he were traded. The Trib also mentioned this in their quarterly report when they report the 3¢ per share hit to earnings that Sammy caused. As for other assumptions, I think it highly unlikely that Borowski, Gremlin or Hairston would be brought back. I think it is a big stretch at this point to assume Patterson will be here, I think he gets traded before the end of July.

    Sorry, I hate any everyday player that cannot do better than a 300 OBP; puts up a 5/1 KK/BB ratio; is completely incapable of making contact, much less getting an actual hit, with men on base; is extremely overrated defensively; and is paid millions of dollars. Next!!!
