  1. I wont be the least bit surprised if Shaffer ends up a better offensive player than Zunino. Maybe not defensively, but offensively I wouldn't be surprised at all.
  2. I saw Sullivan on Chicago Tribune Live the other night...made a fool of himself  Basically said that the Cubs should bring Rizzo up before late June to please the fans. And that the fact that it could cost the Cubs a year of his service time doesn't matter (which is absurd). Then basically got torched by the rest of the panel. I like Sully, but that certainly wasn't one of his better interviews.
  3. Heres the thing...Posey > Zunino I just feel like people are ignoring the fact that the college bats this year are AWFUL, especially compared to last year, which is leading to Zunino being over valued.
  4. Do we know if Javier Baez has been moved to Peoria yet? Havent seen AZ Phil or anyone on TCR say a word about it.
  5. I wont be pissed like Hayden Simpson pissed, but I'll be a little underwhelmed if we go with Zunino. I'll be somewhat relieved if hes off the board by 6.
  6. MLB.com article on Almora http://mlb.mlb.com//news/article.jsp?ymd=20120524&content_id=32161804&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb I'm starting to wonder if he even makes it to us at 6, sounds like someone who will work his a$$ off to be great.
  7. Mayo's second mock draft is out and has us taking Almora He also notes that the word is Cubs will go with a hs bat which will obviously be Correa or Almora
  8. I would be fine with Almora. The only thing I question is his power, outside of that I really like his game.
  9. My dream scenario... 6 - Gausman 43- Virant/Wieckel 56 - Clint Coulter/Branden Kline
  10. I'm hoping 6, and both supp picks are high ceiling guys. I know that probably wont happen, but that's what I really want to see.
  11. This I'm not looking for solid every day player with the 6th overall pick. Cubs need high ceiling talent.
  12. Saw Conception yesterday afternoon...fastball was 89-91 hit 92 a couple times. His curveball was very underwhelming yesterday. He struggled throwing his off speed stuff for strikes. At any pro level of ball you're going to get crushed if the only strike you can throw is a 89-91 mph fastball. Obviously it was just one start, but I wouldn't be surprised if this has been the main reason he's been getting hit so hard early on. Ben Wells...throws lots of sinkers, 90-92 MPH, blew the save but then settled in nicely and got the W. Wells is definitely a starter in my opinion. I'll be out again at noon today
  13. I'll be disappointed if we take Zunino. I know that sounds odd, but I really think the Cubs system is lacking impact talent right now. At 6, I think thats what needs to happen. Zunino profiles as a solid every day player, but not an all star.
  14. Saw Peoria tonight Kyler Burke - fastball was 91-93, hit 94 a couple times. Only pitches from the stretch, which I did not realize. Threw what I think was a hard curve around 82-84. Definitely has the makings of a future LH bullpen guy. Obviously results weren't what he wanted tonight, but his pure stuff was pretty impressive. Marco Hernandez - His stats haven't been very good but he definitely has that smooth look of a good defensive SS. Solid arm and made a really nice play on a ball that was ticketed for center. If he can get his bat going, he's definitely someone to keep an eye. Yao Lin Wang - He impressed me the most tonight. Sat 92-94, hit 95 a couple times. Has a really good curve ball with 12-6 break that sits around 78-80. Really really like this kid. Another bullpen guy, possible late reliever. Other random thoughts...Zeke Devoss looks the part, really good speed, pretty swing. I'm actually a little surprised he's not hitting more than he is, good bat speed in my opinion. I'll be at the game tomorrow and Monday as well.
  15. Just an FYI, I live in Cedar Rapids and will see the entire Peoria v Cedar Rapids series starting tomorrow night. So any specifics you want me to look for let me know. Pretty pumped to see Burke
  16. Such a tease I prefer Fried over Zimmer or Wacha
  17. Has someone tried to explain to Baez that its ok to walk? Good lord. He'll really struggle at the higher levels if he doesn't develop some patience. Probably what held him back from Peoria this year.
  18. Hm, first I've heard of 30+ HR potential for Shaffer, but I can buy me overrating the crap out of Vitters. Looking for some thoughts on some players here... Barrett Barnes CF/OF Texas Tech Tyler Naquin RF/OF A&M Sam Stafford LHP Texas Drew Verhagen RHP Vanderbilt - Big (6'6" 225) pen arm from Vanderbilt Buck Farmer LHP Georgia Tech Jameis Winston OF Alabama HS DJ Baxendale RHP Arkansas Any DJ LeMahieu clones out there? There's a kid from Kansas that I like, but think he's in next year's draft not this year. This from Scoutingbaseball.com ... "Few can challenge Shaffer's pure power in this draft class. And, it's not just raw power. Shaffer shows plus power in game action in just about every setting he's played in. Wood bats have proven to be no challenge for him, as he showed tremendous carry to the middle of the field on the Cape last summer. He profiles as a potential 30 home run bat at the next level" The other intriguing thing about Shaffer is that he's 6'3 200...so he could still add 5-10 pounds of muscle.
  19. Well relative to this mediocrity heap of a draft he might be, but yes there has been talk that he might be overrated on the internet. I've read things like "well a solid average 3B is a good player" in connection with Shaffer. I think he's a likeable talent who falls firmly into the "not at 6" category. No matter the quality of this draft, if Vitters was eligible, I can't imagine he'd be a top 5 round pick. Shaffer projects to hit for more power than Vitters does. Shaffer has a far better idea what to do at the plate with far better discipline (50/44 BB/K this year). He has similar questions about what position he'll play. Shaffer would have been a first rounder last year. More mature and better plate discipline are two big aids. Vitters' as his power stands now, sure. Not sure about him last year, but not crazy to think he could edge his way into the last few picks there where Gilmartin, Panik, and Martin went. Possibly I overrate Vitters' ceiling, but I'm basically thinking either guy could be a 3B who hits in the .270s with maybe 20 HR power and doubles while playing average D there. But the difference is Shaffer gets on base at a higher percentage, and projects 30+ HR power. Other than needing a position change, I really don't understand the Vitters comparison at all. I think you're vastly over rating Vitters.
  20. This draft class is so "meh" that hardly any pick would really piss me off. I still think Richie Shaffer is going to be that guy in this class that we look back on and shake our heads. (that is if our pick doesn't pan out)
  21. Another walk for Lake His improved plate discipline is huge for a couple reasons. 1. Higher OBP (duh) 2. Will lead to better pitches to hit which could really tap into that raw power. Its still early, but Lake would certainly be a legitimate prospect if these things happen
  22. I think Max Fried is the high upside kind of pitching prospect the Cubs lack right now. He has as much projection as any hs arm in the draft already throws 92-93 at 170 pounds. Plus curve, and solid change. Sign me up
  23. Yikes But not that surprising, outside of Richie Shaffer and Zunino, there are very few impact college bats.
  24. My guess is this Buxton Gausman Appel Zunino Correa Fried Almora Stroman Cecchini Zimmer
