  1. my prediction is: they'll make the annual half-hearted PR run @ soriano. a month or so ago, i thought they'd really pursue him, but soriano's playing well above expectations, so the cubs will keep a safe distance. they'll focus on mulder & possibly carlos lee, but lee will need to give them a hometown discount. cliff floyd's a strong possibility. they could capture some lightning, he's a lefthanded power hitter & he's from chicago, so they could get a discount.
  2. Good point. When was the last time the Cubs signed a top FA? Shane Andrews? Probably have to go all the way back to Andre Dawson. dawson kinda fell into their lap. closest thing to a top tier guy is alou.
  3. problem is the cubs have the worse starting pitching in the NL. guzman or marmol is going to have to be real good or no comeback's possible. don't hold your breath for the 2 bums, prior/wood.
  4. if schmidt keeps it up, he'll get a 4-5 year offer from someone not named the cubs. the cubs will do as a always do. go for 2nd tier free agents and hope for lightning in a bottle. they'll also make their annual half-hearted attempt at a top tier player and fall way short. MacPhail's m.o. is so obvious now.
  5. Not really. They have a high team OBP and score a lot of runs. Seems like a good example. Let's look at Cincinnati, who spends less on their roster than the Cubs. OBP of the Cincinnati Reds: Felipe Lopez= .369 Austin Kearns= .363 Adam Dunn= .380 Edwin Encarnacion= .364 Brandon Phillips= .361 Ryan Freel= .378 Scott Hatteberg= .400 Ken Griffey= .352 Rich Aurlia= .338 The Reds have drawn more than 100 more walks than the Cubs. They've also scored nearly a 100 more runs. Of the players listed, only Griffey and Dunn make significant money. 5 Cincinnati hitters have over 30 RBI's on the season. 7 have over 20. They've had 788 base runners via hit or walk. As a team, their batting average is only .268. That's really not all that great. Cubs have had 647 base runners via hit or walk. 141 less than the Reds. The Reds are scoring more runs because they get more guys on base. Plain and simple. cincy slugs like crazy too. how about oakland and sd? they take tons of walks. how they doing?
  6. Soriano--I'm not sure he'd be out of our price range considering the money we'll be cutting loose and our obvious needs...however, I'd really like to get some OBP to go with that pop (yes..I know he's putting up a .360 this year...but his historicals are a little sketchy) Soriano's playing his way into a 5 yr. 70 million deal. No way the Cubs pay anyone more than D. Lee.
  7. could have brought wood back in july and he'd still have the same problems. make him a reliever or something. i hope he's not starting on sunday. i'm tired of seeing him out their struggling. bring on marmol.
  8. I wonder why we got Phil Nevin. Me too. I'm tired of the slap & run lineup.
  9. The Yankees are a poor example to prove one's point about obp. Nearly every team would love to have Jeter, Giambi, Arod, Posada and Damon, but no one has $85 million to throw out on 5 players. Heck Lee, Walker, Cedeno, Aram, Murton, Pierre, Jones & Barrett cost around $37 million. That's as much as Giambi and Jeter make.
  10. If they're expecting Prior back in a couple weeks, I can see why they're still going w/ Rusch, cause Prior's just going to bump one of the kids back down to Iowa.
  11. Exclude all the guys w/ injuries and the Yankees probably still have the highest payroll in baseball. And...??? What does this have to do with the point of the article? pretty simple. if you have the most money, then there's a good chance you'll have the best hitters. giambi, jetah, arod, posada and damon cost about as much as the entire cub payroll.
  12. Guzman has a lot more potential...
  13. Exclude all the guys w/ injuries and the Yankees probably still have the highest payroll in baseball.
  14. finally a good pitcher. cubs' offense will come back to life. cincy would be better served calling up a minor leaguer to pitch to the cubs.
  15. Do you believe that he will hit like this for the rest of the season? i wouldn't be surprise if he puts up a .850 ops. lee & barrett became better hitters after joining the cubs, so maybe jones too. Didnt Lee and Barrett hit their prime with the Cubs too? I hope Jones puts up an .850 ops, but im not holding my breath. Jones is 31 and has only done that once in his life. yep, but both have had quite an improvement w/ chicago. lee's ops last year was 200 points better than his best w/ florida. barret was .655, .749 & .678 in his last 3 seasons w/ montreal. he's went .826, .824 and .868 w/ the cubs. Those bumps coincide nicely with the 28-29 year range, do they not? Jones? Not so much. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's far from likely. Players usually dont wait until they turn 31 to become useful. Here's to hoping though. True that. Lee was 29 when he took off. Iirc Jones has dealt w/ some personal problems since 2004. I believe his father died in 2004, and Jones had a very difficult time dealing with it. His numbers dropped off from .797 in 2003 & .852 in 2002 to .742 and 757. Believe me that's something hard to deal with, but perhaps all that is behind him, and he's ready to pick up where he left off in 2002. Who knows he could start a severe slump tomorrow too. :?
  16. If they want to cut some payroll for next year, package Rusch & Walker to NY for some prospects. NY needs pitching help anyways. Matsui's garbage and they're using Valentin @ 2b. Walker gives them depth. No Wood, Maddux, Pierre & Rusch = $30 mil. gone. :D In the offseason, trade Prior, Cedeno, and prospects for Tejada. Get Prior the heck out of Chicago.

  18. iirc they said they were getting the hgh out of mexico. no wonder giles stayed in sd. easy access :) giambi must load up when he returns home to socal during the offseason.

  20. they might as well enjoy it, cause the reds will go downhill soon. didn't they start off hot last year too. hopefully, the cards take a nosedive like the cubs did when lee went down.
  21. Do you think that Pierre would catch fire if someone used his photo as an avatar? knock yourself out bud. :) pierre's due to get real hot, since jones is due to slump. at least that's what i keep reading about jones. :?
  22. when he wins a game? he's had 14 shots now. he's overdue.
  23. 9 walks. he had one outing where he walked 4.
  24. I would much rather have Giles' OBP than Jones' SLG. Also, I really don't think there's any way Jones maintains this level of production while Giles will probably improve from where he is right now. to be fair then, if we are to assume that jones will return to career numbers, then the same should be expected of pierre. maybe jones will have a career year.
  25. For twice the cost. It would be money well spent compared to Jones' deal. what's wrong w/ .900 ops??
