If he blows away the AFL, it becomes a non zero chance, in my opinion, of him being in our Opening Day lineup. Even with our FO being extremely cautious. I just don't see any way he doesn't start the year in AAA. There's too much to be gained on multiple levels. He may come right up in May after continuing his dominance in Iowa and postponing FA, but no way on Opening Day. This just isn't true. A long shot? Yes. Zero chance? Absolutely not. I mean, we can hold up a Lloyd Christmas type chance if we want to be really pedantic, but I haven't seen a single reason that Baez would be there on Opening Day in the face of the reasons not to. Service time being by far the most important, but also exposing him to some more quality breaking pitches at AAA, where Brett Jackson's face plant isn't so long ago that we should forget it. It also buys time for Baez to work on another position or to best determine what's going on with Castro. There also isn't an extreme urgency to add him with guys like Valbuena and Barney able to guarantee "not-replacement level" production around the infield, at least for 5 weeks. What compelling reason is there in the face of all that, that makes Baez's presence on Opening Day at all likely? Different front offices sure, but I doubt anyone expected Jose Fernandez to break camp this year, but he did, and he's gonna be your NL Rookie of the Year.
