See the thing is, the Cubs are nowhere bad enough to tank. The NL Central is so bad that they can still actually compete assuming no other moves are made. I wish they were bad enough to tank again but they're likely gonna sit in the high 70's for wins and that's enough to keep them in the NL Central until the end. This move indicates to me, like I said, more moves are coming with the age of these prospects. While the NL Central may prop us up I still see picking top 7-10 on the horizon soon for a while.
Rebuilds aren’t easy and we were spoiled by the most successful one in sports history. It’s far more likely we aren’t a playoff team for another 10+ years than it is we have this thing back on track in 3-4 years like last time.
Man this trade sucks, I don’t care if the guys turn out, it’s a terrible process. You HAVE to get a top end prospect for Darvish and Caratini, especially taking on Davies salary. 4 lotto tickets 17-20 or whatever is insane. This indicates to me we are burning this to the ground with those prospect’s time horizon’s. Tank time.
I expect a haul here too. The prospect names haven’t come out yet. But Q was only 27/28 vs Yu being 34 (turns 35 during the year), Q was controlled as long but for 1/3 the price, and had cleaner injury history/more consistent (Q was in the middle of 4 straight 4+ WAR seasons, Yu hasn’t been over 4 since 2013, even though last year he was well on pace).
Eh, still have Abrams, Hassell, Morejon and other pitchers that could be in there. With Willy, Amaya, Higgins and some other catchers not getting him isn’t the biggest loss to me depending on the other pieces.
I’m ready to do the same and then start embracing the tank If it's true they're getting major leaguers back, doesn't seem to be a very ambitious tank effort. Shifting from Yu to Myers and Davies certainly makes us worse and we still have to fill a roster. Plus they still could be unloading other dudes like KB/Willy/etc.
If Myers, Davies and Cronenworth (especially Myers) are involved and there’s no money coming over we actually add payroll the next two years. We’re in the $150-160 mil range right now. The trade, with those three and no money sent adds ~$9 mil this year (Davies projects for $8.5 in arb this year) and ~$12 next year if we were to tender Davies a contract in his final year of arb.
He’s broken some moves before. If it’s Myers we better be getting a haul of prospects and one of their better ones. He sucks and makes more money than Yu the next two years.
Davies is homeless man’s Hendricks but he’s an okay piece for the year and obviously isn’t a main part of the trade. He can reasonably be expected for ~175 innings, ~4 ERA/FIP, ~2 WAR. We need some innings eaten. Would also be cool if we use Campusano to flip for Lindor or used Cronenworth to flip for Arenado.
Man the schedule gets ridiculously rough from here for awhile. 9 of next 10 on the road, 7 of the 10 against 2020 playoff teams 9 of 10 on the road? How did the Bulls get the old Circus trip in the year of Covid? They’re trying to minimize travel so I think expanded road trips and keep teams in a regional area more. Like they’re at Washington back to back in the stretch, then don’t go back for the year. Play all the California teams and Blazers when they’re out west too and don’t go back.
Wily Myers sucks and makes as much as Yu. We better get like their top 5 prospects back then. Cronenworth, Pham, 1 of Abrams or Hassell and a pitcher back is what I want. And throw in Vic and sell them he’s a key to Yu’s success to extract extra pieces.
