  1. the reality is that he's not terrible relative to other managers, he's just disappointingly close to them. i don't want him gone or anything, he just annoys me way more often than i thought he would. He manages a season well but I feel that every team is recognizing the importance of rest more and more. The way he seems to emphasize fun and stuff is good. His in game stuff is weird and seems to be getting weirder. He’s fine as a manager but if he wasn’t our manager I’m not sure it’s a huge loss (not that mangers mean all THAT much anyways) I still think he's far an away the best at being a "CEO" and creating a productive culture/work/clubhouse environment and the day to day minutia of a long season. There's definitely more managers in the league that are far worse than him than are at the same level as him overall. The lineup/bullpen stuff sucks at times, but every team bitches about the manager with that (not that it's an excuse because there are times it's inexcusable) but I just think there's no perfect manager. We also don't know if it's all Joe with the lineups and bullpen stuff or if he's getting it from the FO/other coaches, we also don't know the day to day stuff on if guys have a little injury or are gassed or whatever that on the surface an off day or use of a guy doesn't make sense but it makes perfect sense with what he/they know.
  2. Would be really cool if neither of those teams made the playoffs. Yup. They still scare me the most in a playoff series, especially the Nats. If healthy.
  3. Could the Dodgers and Nats combine their best ~8 relief pitchers that are currently healthy and be better than league average?
  4. As a follow up to the Anthony Bass decision, it seems CubsProspects had a noteworthy take on it. Very likely end of the road between Mr. Bass & the Cubs: [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] Thanks for posting that. I'm also very confused by this decision. I was a big fan of Bass and thought he was very solid in his time up here. I don't know why they took him off the 40-man roster and exposed him. We could certainly use him in September if healthy. I don't understand the rationale behind this move at all. He’s a 30 year old RP who was good for ~10 innings then got hand foot and mouth disease and then another injury. We’re going to need to make 40-man moves for Yu and Smyly in the next 2-3 weeks and maybe also add a guy through waivers. It made sense to “risk” it to clear a 40-man spot. Also if nobody else claimed him, what does that tell us about him? In his only two outings since coming back from Hand Foot and Mouth (before getting hurt again) he went 1IP 3H 4ER 1HR 2BB
  5. It came out last month (maybe a little later actually) he has some sort of hand or finger injury and basically just has to play through it. It won’t get worse that they’re risking further injury but also won’t get better without extended rest. I think it’s definitely playing a role. Sounds similar to Zobrist’s wrist thing last year.
  6. Good, horsefeathers the Nats. I don’t want them in the playoffs
  7. I mean this entirely seriously, I want to keep Heyward. We can still fit Bryce in with him and I’ll buy in he’s figured it out enough offensively and he’s still good on defense. Plus I think he’s an awesome teammate and clubhouse guy.
  8. Because they’re mediocre and need something to give them hope for their ultimate destination of a 82 to 85 win year. Basically what Jake said.
  9. It’s the total guaranteed money divided by the guaranteed years for LT purposes, it doesn’t matter how you actually pay the money
  10. I’d like to see something like Give Hamels 2/18-25 if this continues Sign Bryce to 30-35 AAV Re-sign Chavez for Duensings deal this year Attach Almora and another nothing prospect with Chatwood and take a minor leaguer or backup catcher back Trade like Caritini with a prospect to move Duensing Non-tender Seal boy Hope Kintzler doesn’t opt in and obviously don’t pick up his option Position players (12) KB Rizzo Baez Zobrist Russell Bote Happ Schwarber Heyward Bryce Willy Back up C Pitchers (13) (maybe go 6-man) Lester Yu Hendricks Q Hamels Monty Chavez Smyly Strop Cishek Carl Morrow Maples/Mekkes/Bass/Whatever Hopefully that’s enough to keep us under the upper LT tier and also is based on them feeling comfortable Bote can play some OF and CF. But that’s my ideal offseason.
  11. he's on pace for 150 RBI low leverage: 150 wRC+ medium leverage: 208 wRC+ high leverage: 272 wRC+ (.483/.590/.862) with men on base, he's hitting .347/.427/.698 nobody seems to understand how Boston's 50(!) games over, but i have a couple ideas I hate treating awards like you just look at WAR and go "well there you go" so I'm with you there. But Martinez has spent all year with Mookie (.438 OBP and more importantly 39 doubles or triples mostly out of leadoff) and Benentendi (.383 OBP) right in front of him. Meanwhile Trout bats behind Kole Calhoun, who was hitting under .200 as recently as late July, and Ian Kinsler (.308 OBP, got shipped off ironically to boston at the deadline.) It's no secret why trout gets "walks instead of XBH." But anyway i hope people do keep voting against him so he'll pull a bonds and roid up and really break horsefeathers for a decade. I abeee with the premise of don’t just look at WAR. But these other 3 guys are blowing him out of the water in WAR, the RISP/RBIs don’t make up for that, for me. On top of Martinez not playing defense other than ~40 games (which when he does is bad). Also, fwiw Benintendi is closer to Martinez in fWAR than Martinez is to these other 3 and Xander is closer to him than JD is 2 of the other 3.
  12. Joe better put out the no horsefeathers around lineups for these two games which means all of Zobrist/Heyward/Schwarber/Bote/Baez/Rizzo/Willy better start both games and then decide between Russell at SS and Zobrist in the OF or Happ in the OF and Zobrist at 2B. Almora better not start.
  13. it is the tiebreaker, and a huge one; the main candidates all have monster stats but Trout gets substantially worse the higher the leverage situation and Martinez the reverse fWAR doesn't incorporate that at all and misses a huge part of the equation...walks are cool, certainly, but there's a valid reason teams just freely give them to you sometimes The fact the other guys play defense at good to great levels is the tie breaker for me
  14. My only issue with the idea of trading Russell, is I'm guessing his value isn't all that high and he could still fill a decent role on the team. He probably shouldn't be planned as a 145-150+ game starter next year with Bote and hopefully Bryce around. But he can still be pretty valuable for us in a role as a defensive sub/depth for injuries/start maybe 80-100 games. My biggest issue with the idea of trading him would mean we have to sign like a Jordy Mercer type for likely more aav than he'll cost in arbitration next year and Russell still has the great defense which we can deploy and hope for the bat to not be complete ass.
  15. Yeah no way would I vote for JD, even though he's having a great offensive year, but I could get behind Betts or Ramirez. Especially if this Trout injury keeps him out or makes him bad the rest of the year. I just can't see giving the MVP to a DH only when there's plenty of good other candidates and that DH isn't on pace to set or get close to HR, BA, etc records. he's on pace for 150 RBI low leverage: 150 wRC+ medium leverage: 208 wRC+ high leverage: 272 wRC+ (.483/.590/.862) with men on base, he's hitting .347/.427/.698 nobody seems to understand how Boston's 50(!) games over, but i have a couple ideas Yeah I don't really care about any of that as a main reason to vote for a guy. As a tie breaker, sure. But there's 3 better candidates, IMO.
  16. i think i'm totally on board with this, and i might go a step further to make it really scorching and say he might not be top-5 for me at the moment did you know: Trout has worst clutch score in baseball right now no horsefeathering way is martinez and mvp over trout, even though holy horsefeathers martinez is horsefeathering good. but im down with betts or ramirez. Yeah no way would I vote for JD, even though he's having a great offensive year, but I could get behind Betts or Ramirez. Especially if this Trout injury keeps him out or makes him bad the rest of the year. I just can't see giving the MVP to a DH only when there's plenty of good other candidates having great offensive years that also play defense (at good levels) unless that DH isn't on pace to set or get close to HR, BA, etc records.
  17. He’s been about what I would’ve expected. Maybe .010-.015 points lower on batting average. I think he still has a decent hit tool and think he’s more of a ~.265 and not sub .250 hitter (I know we’re only talking probably like 10 hits over the course of a year). Would be nice to see the Ks come down 2-4% at the least as well. But overall he’s about what I expected and there’s a little more in there. He seems to be in a bit of a slump lately, so hopefully he has a strong final ~45 games. Edit: His expected BA is .258 vs the .245 he’s at and xWOBA is .369 vs the .348 it’s at. So yeah if he gets in line with what he “should” be that’s pretty much who I expect him to be. Plus I feel like some of the Ks are due to the absolute horrible zone he’s been given this year. Not only has he gotten called for Ks on balls that aren’t strikesI’m sure it’s fucked him up to be swinging at more horsefeathers than he likes to because of horsefeathers umps.
  18. Trade Almora for whatever in the offseason, sign Bryce and Russell becomes a defensive sub/2 time a week starter (probably mostly vs LHP) and last man on bench. Problem solved. This is on the assumption Bote can play some OF (specifically CF) and joe said last night he will get a chance to do that in the offseason/ST.
  19. I saw a tweet 2-3 weeks ago that stated something like "The Nationals are having the season Cubs fans think the Cubs are having." That manifested itself tonight.
  20. Sweep these fucks and effectively end the division
