  1. All right Evergreen Park, I'll play one more time. What is about this guy that has people defending him like he's their brother? He doesn't do anything exceptionally well and hasn't performed when asked to in longer stretches. A complete "tweener" in every sense. I'm not a hater, just not memorized by his numbers achieved through sporadic playing time. He won't be anybody's starting corner OF. I could care less where he plays, or doesn't play, if it's a good team or a bad team, and I don't think Gathright has anything to do with Murton. Rice, Marist, Rita or EPHS?
  2. 0.0 Felix Pie was traded to Baltimore. June 25, 2009 After an amazing start, Felix Pie is traded for Felix Hernandez and Ichiro. June 26 2009 Jim Hendry goes missing ... Hendry goes missing because his fingerprints are all over the neck of Lous lifeless body.
  3. 2010 is a club option. He might not come back, or be welcome back, if they fail to make the playoffs.
  4. What is not the same about a RH pitcher getting a LH hitter out?
  5. Aren't those backloaded contracts obstructive to us fielding a more competitive team this year? We'll be better able to judge that in 9 months or so. One thing we already do know, is that those contracts are responsible for the Cubs being competitive to begin with.
  6. Completely agree. There might be some nice young players available because of the economic climates possible effects on small and mid level markets.
  7. Who cares if the contracts are back loaded or front loaded as long as the guys produce? So far, everyone he's signed has been productive. He's not the GM of the Pirates. If and/or when those contracts prove to be obstructive to fielding a competitive team, that would be the appropriate time to judge them as bad contracts.
  8. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SDN/SDN200806020.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/FLO/FLO200808150.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN200808210.shtml Three games in which Zambrano's offense contributed to a run, and the Cubs won by one. Wait, in the first game you posted he puts the Cubs behind by three because of his lack of self control, and in the second game he puts the Cubs in a 5-1 hole because of his pitching. I'd still rather have Z the good pitcher over Z the hitter.
  9. He won't get signed by anyone before the June draft because of the first round compensation.
  10. They ALL got there? I'm still waiting on Juhjima to follow that second year pattern. There was alot more expected from Kaz Matsui but, in general, he did get better. I think that the wrist surgey he was recovering from played a big role in his struggles. He hardly hit a ball out of the infield during ST until the final week. Then after getting better contact in the last week, he blows up in April. Somewhere in May or June, he probably tweaked his wrist again and it played a big role in his swing getting longer like it appeared by August.
  11. One of my most hated crazy old man rants from Lou. Everyone knew he was struggling, nobody was saying, hey Lou why don't you play Kosuke more, but there he goes running him out to RF in game 1 despite rarely starting him down the stretch. What the hell did he expect. I agree with you on this one. Not only that, but Lou takes the time to single out Fukudome after the game two fiasco saying he doesn't want to hear more about Fokudome or whatever. That was uncalled for. Was he paying attention to the series' that Aram and Soto were having? He had it within his power to not play Fuku who was struggling. Ironically, Fuku has a decent game 3 after he was forced to play anyways.
  12. I don't know about that. We're talking elbow surgery here. I feel the same way as you do in regards that this could be an opportunity to land a quality pitcher but there is too much mystery surrounding a guy who now adds elbow to long history of shoulder issues. Plus, is there such a thing as this years available cash? I'm not sure, but if there was, I'd invest it into Peavy before Sheets.
  13. Dusty is the new GM? I missed that, I thought they had a guy who was a genius with the Cardinals as the GM? Interesting.
  14. i saw this today when i was at the gym and this was my same thought. Give him a 2-year, 12-15 million dollar deal. Pay him a small portion this year to rehab, and then the rest next year. If he struggles in 2010, oh well, it's just a one-year pill you swallow. If he hits it big, he gets paid and gets to go for a big deal in 2011 12-15M seems too much for a guy who could be throwing his first pitches next year. 2/10. it probably is, but you have to offer him something he'll take, too. Maybe make the 2010 cash incentive laden, but who knows if he'll take it. I'm going to be relatively upset if Hendry doesn't even test these waters. I mean, Wade Miller... come on. He invested a total of 2.5 mil into the two year Wade Miller experiment. It didn't work, but it was a good gamble. Sheets will likely command more than that, but its' too early to tell.
  15. This is a 9-10 month rehab surgery. Nobody is going to get anything from Sheets in 2009. Paying him 12-15 mil on a two year deal is akin to paying him that much for one year. Everyone will wait and see how the early reports are after surgery. Then, after the June draft, you'll start seeing teams jockeying for position because he is still relatively young. I'm going back and fourth with this one. Who is the bigger fool? Melvin for offering Arb or Sheets for declining?
  16. Yeah, and on second thought, I might see why they offered him arbitration knowing he had a torn flexor. They were trying to get him at a discounted rate when they revealed the extent of his injury.
  17. It's too bad. He's a nice guy and a great pitcher. But elbow surgery at 32 years of age is not a recipe for a huge contract any time soon. Maybe it's back to the Brewers if they have to pay for the surgery. NM, he's 30 next year. Fine Dempster him immediately. Why would you offer arbitration to a pitcher with a torn flexor? The Brewers just dodged a $15 million speeding train.
  18. You probably aren't going to get that from him again but, whatever, I'm done with Matt Murton. I've had too many of these discussions about how he just needs the right situation etc. I hope he's found it.
  19. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090205&content_id=3801488&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp Not very surprising considering how all the team with money to spend avoided him like the plague.
  20. .277 BA .345 OBP .423 SLG .768 OPS at Sacramento with 1 HR and 13 RBIs .298 BA .397 OBP .382 SLG .779 OPS at Iowa with 1 HR and 15 RBIs 2 home runs in the minor leagues for a corner outfielder.......... it's kinda amazing that he's still getting chances at this point. Probably because people aren't basing everything off of last year alone. Cause to do so would be really stupid. 28 HR's in 900 career at bats... still not good for a corner outfielder. So ~18 or 19 over a full season. Coupled with the ability to take a walk, it's not a wonder he's getting chances at all. He's never going to be a star corner OF, but what exactly separates Murton from Jose Guillen or comparable other fringe starting OFs in the majors? He's ideal as a 4th OF off the bench. He's ideal as a 4th OF off the bench I wouldn't say ideal. I'd say that's his ceiling. Let's face it, he's not getting 600 PA from anybody so to say he's a 18 or 19 hr guy is a reach. If he sticks with a team he'll likely get 250 or so PA in a limited role and he'll do OK.
  21. Plus the small little detail that collusion implies that all owners conspired and that is obviously not the case with Manny/Boras (is there a bigger tandem of teabaggers?) who have received multiple market value offers for a hitter that does little else on a baseball field or in the clubhouse.
  22. Valentin makes Bako look like a gold glover if it's any consolation. For my tastes, its' still more important to have a backup catcher that can handle the glove and pitchers before hitting is factored in. Most young catchers who are any good are turned into corner OF or corner infielders in this country. That's helped street agents in the Dominican Republic develop the Latin Express to the Major Leagues - converting middle infielders with strong arms and no bat to catcher (standard altered birth certificate at no extra cost).
  23. I'm not sure about the doubles and avg thing you said. I learned earlier, in another thread, that large ballparks hurt your batting average and doubles. At least that's what I read into peoples excuses as to why Greene struggled in Petco. Apparently large outfields are bad for hitters when it should be understood that large outfields are bad for bad hitters.
  24. I understood what you meant and you have a valid point. He had an unbelievable run with LA, and has been a great producer in his career, but nonetheless, may the pox befall anyone who signs that dread-headed turdbag who quit on his team in the middle of the pennant race.
  25. The giving him away for nothing now instead of seeing if he can do anything in ST and if he can't releasing him then. I understand that the Cubs have Minor League rosters they need to fill but couldn't they just sign a ML FA. If they bring Hill to ST and he still hasn't figured it out try sending him through waivers. If he doesn't clear then so be it. If he did then they'd have another shot at fixing him. Hill has more of a chance to help the Cubs than whoever they got in this deal. You're completely overlooking the fact if he would have sucked in ST (actually it's more when than if), then you literally get nothing for him. Now if he does find it with the O's, the Cubs end up getting something. Something is better than nothing. Hill has more of a chance to help the Cubs than whoever they got in this deal. This is a fantasy on the level of Prior (who I was guilty of wishing for). When has a pitcher that has lost his control as badly as Hill ever made a comeback? It doesn't happen. It's time to move on. I'm sure there's a great possibility that the ptbnl ends up being nothing but that will have more to do with Hill being nothing at the O's camp.
