    Van Buren has been nothing short of dominant at every level of the minors the past two seasons. It is good to see him get the call, he certainly has earned it. There has been talk that scouts don't think his stuff can translate to the big leagues. I guess now we will have a chance to find out. Go Jermaine!

    Wow, what a thread. Hendry actually manages to get not one but two still breathing human beings in exchange for Todd Hollandsworth and much of the reaction in this thread is filled with venom. I realize it has been a disappointing season, but can't we at least celebrate the small successes like this one when they come along? This is a thread of about what Hendry got in return for Todd Hollandsworth and many of the posts are about Baker and Macias. Lets keep responses topic specific please. If you want to vent about Baker, thats fine, just do it in the appropriate topic. Meanwhile... Its not as miraculous as trading Todd Hundley for Grudzielanek and Karros, but getting anyone for Hollandsworth is worthy of a pat on the back.

    I have bolded two things. Guess which one upsets me (note that neither is surprising, including the point that he's going to end up missing more than 10 weeks). There usually is a big difference between being allowed to compete for a roster spot and being handed the starting CF job. And I sure hope that is Sullivan's opinion that Pie is a "viable" lead-off hitter. Speed, yes, proven ability to get on base at the major league level, not so much.

    After all is said and done, the Cubs started the day 5 1/2 out of the wildcard and finished it 5 games out. It aint much, but is progress. Now they've got to go out and win again tomorrow. Go Cubs!

    As a starter, yeah. But he said he had it up at 92 for a few innings. Who knows where his future is, but if it's in the bullpen, he could conceivably even throw a tad harder. It also sounded as if his velocity was coming back as a result of him not muscling up and trying to throw "hard" and just letting his natural ability take over. If he can continue to "trust" his arm, his velocity may continue to build over time even as a starter. Bottom line, its still wait and see with Brownlie.

    What I meant is that the fans that don't pay enough attention, whether they are Hendry backers or not, likely wouldn't change their position on the issue based on PT after they've been mathematically eliminated, since they, well, wouldn't pay attention to it. That sounds like a lot of "transmogrification" to me, but I'll have to take your word for it.

    Right, but I think the point that CP20 was making was that in order to have that kind of HR power, you need to be aggressive to generate the necessary bat speed which means Harvey will have that fraction of a second less to recognize which pitch to swing at and which one to let go. He can still improve his pitch recognition like everyone else, but that is why power hitters in general have a higher strikeout rate than contact hitters.

    Wow, maybe it wasn't just a rumor after all. Still, there is a big difference between hitting 92 and consistently living there with your fastball.

    With the Marlins victory and including the Cubs win, Cubs fans are 4-1 in games going their way so far. Even if the Brewers don't come back, 4-2 aint bad.

    My thoughts exactly, Derwood. Have there really been people who think that it would be better if the Astros won a game against the Brewers in this series?

    The Cubs did their part today. The victories by the Mets and Pirates were made to order, but none of it will really mean anything in the standings tonight unless the Dodgers can stage a 9th inning comeback and the Brew Crew can hold on. LA has men on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Burnett just left the game. Doug Davis retired the Astros in order in the bottom of the 6th. Stay tuned.

    Well, he hasn't done much since coming to eh Cubs but he has too much previous success to expect that his poor performance will continue indefinitely, so, no, I'm not fed up with him. Although he does have a history of struggling in the second half. :| Not much of one when you factor in the injuries.
