  1. With the rumored bad blood between Dodgers GM, and former Cubs front office man, Ned Colletti and the Cubs, something tells me that the report from ESPN... ...that cites an unnamed "baseball executive" is probably just a plant from someone in the Cubs front office trying to stir up a decent offer from one of the other NL West teams.
  2. What character issues did Brownlie have? I remember health issues, but not character. Maybe I'm imagining this, but didn't he holdout and reenter the draft after refusing to sign with someone? He held out for awhile after being drafted by the Cubs and talked about returning to school for his final year of eligibility, but he signed with the Cubs without returning to class. Okay, then I was imagining it. Being on the same sleeping schedule as a 10 day old really messes with your memory! I've got a 9-day old. Congrats! Congrats to you too! Boy or girl? A girl named Bailey. My 2-year-old girl, Eleanor, said the following just today, "I like watching the Cubs." I'm a very happy man... What did you have? A girl. Named Ryan Alicia. I'm a very happy, very tired man. She's our first. :D A girl named Ryan? It may be a bit unorthodox, but Ryan Alicia is a beautiful name. Congratulations. BTW, we are into unorthodox names in our household. Bailey's middle name is Suu. And no that's not a typo. Eleanor's middle name is Cady. The unusual spellings aren't just for fun. Both are names of female world leaders.

  4. You've got me dreaming now too. We'll just have to call you Mr. Sandman...

However, he still wound up like him.
  7. I'll be shocked if the Cubs get LaRoche from the Dodgers, but if they do and they can also get Santana and Aybar for Ramirez, I've got to strongly consider making those deals.
  8. If there is a way to get LaRoche in a deal for Maddux, do it, whatever it takes. But I just doubt the Dodgers are going to do that. If they do do that, then the Cubs must strongly consider trading Aramis to the Angels.
  9. I remember reading on the ESPN trade rumor page in a blurb about Morgan Ensberg that Huff isn't likely to stay in Houston and will likely be on the market this fall.
  10. I realize he is pitching in the AL, but Ervin's numbers aren't exactly impressive. As the centerpiece in a deal for a player like Tejada or Aramis, I can understand why the other teams aren't jumping at it. He is still just 23, so he can/will improve, but by that measure so should Jerome Williams.
  11. He was actually drafted late beacuse he was a junior and was going to go back to school and teams didn't think he would sign. But he grew up a Cubs fan and Wilken saw him in the Cape where he hit better with a wood bat than he did his last year in college so they took him late. Good points, Nate. Thanks. But he wouldn't be described as toolsy either, would he?
  12. Miledge could already be in Cubbie blue if the Cubs would have drafted him instead of Harvey. :x Very true, but also quite a bit of 20/20 hindsight there. Not one person on this board or any expert out there called the choice of Harvey a foolish or bad selection at the time. And maybe, and I stress maybe, they had good reason. Harvey is hitting .310/.333/.655 with 9 HRs in the month of July. Might some sort of light has turned on for him?
  13. Who here thinks this performance from Maddux today helps get him traded?
  14. Really? After just under 30 games in the NWL, not all of which have been in CF, he can be proclaimed as able to "hang in CF in the big leagues"? Isn't that a bit hasty? Hence the "should." I'm judging more from the routes he's running to the flyballs. If he can do what he's doing now with so few games in CF over the past few years, I think he has the ability to improve enough (that if his bat allows him), he'll stay at CF in the bigs. Heck yeah, and the humidity too. I take it you live inland too? Its not the IE, but Santa Clarita is inland, no doubt. I see what you mean about the route running and the lack of experience in center. That is certainly where his bat would have the most value, but so long as an athlete like Pie is in the organization, I doubt Colvin will be roaming anything but left field. And that's fine by me so long as the Cubs have enough power in the infield.
  15. In terms of OF defense, it sounds (I've mostly listened to his games, not watched many) like he takes good routes along with those fancy catches. Thus far, he seems to have made the transition to CF after limited time there at Clemson. He should be able to hang in CF in the big leagues. How's his arm? Before the draft I believe it was described as a fringe LF arm at best but he seems to be throwing out quite a few runners. Is it just young players getting greedy or has his arm been better than advertised? All I could find on his arm was from BA's draft coverage. According to them... That's sounds better than a fringe left-field arm. He is a solid LFer with an average arm. Pierre's arm isn't all that great.
  16. Really? After just under 30 games in the NWL, not all of which have been in CF, he can be proclaimed as able to "hang in CF in the big leagues"? Isn't that a bit hasty? BTW, nice to have the run of 100 degree days break finally, isn't it?
  17. You ain't kiddin'. His inability to select the right pitches to swing at is really holding him back. Unless he improves there, all the 4 HR games in the world at the High A level won't make him a major league quality hitter. I suspect he knows this, though... Jeff Francouer still doesn't. There a difference in knowing you need to improve your K/BB ratio and having the ability to do it. I'm willing to bet that if you asked Francouer if he felt he could improve on that area of his game, he would say that he definitely needs to. As far as comparing what Francouer is doing at the major league level to what Harvey might be able to do there, at the High A level, Francouer struckout 70 times in 334 ABs. At Low A, he struckout 68 times in 524 ABs. Harvey's numbers unfortunately pale in comparison. At High A, Ryan has struckout 100 times in 359 ABs. And last year at Low A, he struckout 137 times in 467 ABs. It doesn't look good for Ryan unless he can show remarkable improvement in his strike zone judgement. I think he can do it, though the odds are likely against him at this point.
  18. Chalk up another one for Tyco. That's 3 on the evening to raise his average to .331. Ah, heck, send him to Peoria. I'm not sure how much more he has to prove at this level. He's hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games and has an 11-game hitting streak.

  20. Wilton Chavez is now pitching for the Iowa. Remember him? This makes the trade for Jose Macias look even better!!!
  21. Another hit for Colvin, his 2nd on the night, to raise his average to .325. Including his first 3 ABs of tonights game and going back 17 games now, he is batting .423 (30-for-71) and has raised his average 151 points. What is the thinking on promoting him in the midst of this hot streak? He is on a winning ball club, Boise is currently in 1st place, he is experiencing success and he is age appropriate for the NWL. I would only disrupt his flow and move him to Peoria if I felt it was likely that he would start next season in Daytona.
  22. Tyco with another hit tonight extending his streak to 11 games. Over his last 10 games, Tyler has hit .444 (20-for-45). He has scored in 9 out of those 10 games for a total of 17 runs. He has a XBH in 8 out of those 10 games for a total of 8 doubles, 2 triples and 2 HRs. Thats a SLG of .844. He has walked twice and struckout twice in those 45 ABs and has driven in 13 runs while getting an RBI in 8 of those 10 games. Over his last 16 games, he is batting .412 and has raised his average 142 points not including tonight's game.
  23. OMG, Ryan Harvey. Some kind of light has turned on for him over the last couple of weeks. He needs to keep it up though. There is hope for him yet, Cubs fans. Jonathon Mota with a nice night. WTG, D-Cubs! Nice win.
