  1. Eury Ramos had an interesting start, he of the mid-90s FB but not much else at this point. He shut down West Michigan thru the first 4 innings, giving up only a bunt single with 2 walks and 3 Ks. Did he tire in the 5th this early in the season? Maybe, who knows. No velocities were given. He didn't look dominate out there. FB has velocity but looks pretty straight. He rarely showed an average-looking curve and an equally rare change up that is clearly a work in progress. He's 21, 6'3" and thin, but not as wiry thin as his listed 152 lbs. suggests (Looks more like 170ish). He seems like a long shot with a lot of development left.
  2. Jared Young really likes hitting off of the Braves top pitching prospects. Hit a 1st inning HR off Ian Anderson in the season opener and another one today off of Joey Wentz. Lefty against lefty.
  3. Yeah, it was speculation by AZ Phil, but it is interesting to note that he could've signed back in early February and hasn't signed with the Orioles yet.
  4. In the 1st inning, struckout the first guy on a change up on the outside corner. The second was on a high FB and the third on a good curve. The only announced was on his curve at 72 mph. It was later announced he hit 93 in the 1st. Led off the 2nd inning with a 91 mph FB. There were no more velo readings given after that. (I don't know what these announcers are thinking. Just dumb.) Amaya's HR was to straight away CF off the hitter's background over the 400 foot sign. It was, dare I say, Contreras-esque. Exit velocity of 102. Hudson struck out the 1st two batters in the 5th. Appeared to tire a bit, walking the next better and going 2-0 on the next before the pitching coach slow walked it to the mound to give him a breather. Got the last out on a groundball to 2nd. Overall, better FB command for Hudson than last year. That's not saying much, though. The announcers said Hudson dropped his arm slot late last year and gained a bit of velocity as a result.
  5. Abbott picks up where he left off last season with a typically stingy and efficient outing going 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2K on 68 pitches (40 strikes). That's 2-for-2 for the AA rotation with Hatch's dominant performance last night. With the depth of BOR prospects in the system (Clifton, Swarmer, Robinson, Rucker, Abbott, Hatch, Miller, Thompson, Steele, Underwood, De La Cruz, etc.), if just one can emerge as a legit MOR prospect this season, that would help a lot. It just takes one...
  6. AZ Phil speculates on who the Cubs might be after with their newfound IFA money: Sanchez, of course, was ranked the #3 overall IFA prospect by MLB, and Villalobos was ranked #34 by BA. And this from a January 22nd article from Fangraphs:
  7. I'll try to watch later and let you know if they mention any velos.
  8. Well, that should bring in one of those shiny new Cubans. Nice! I hope its a major league ready reliever...
  9. Yeah, watching Hatch's game right now, he's never looked better. There was some talk during spring training that he had found something on one of his pitches in the second half of last season and was much improved since then. The announcers mentioned which pitch it was but I can't remember. The numbers reflect that improvement. In August, Hatch posted his best ERA, best K/9, BB/9 and BAA of any month that year. The walks dropped dramatically.
  10. In his 1st AB of the season, Jared Young HRs of off Braves top prospect Ian Anderson (1st round pick, 3rd overall in 2016). Anderson had giving up 3 HRs in 242.2 IP before facing Young.
  11. The mysterious story of 6'6" LHP Andres Bonalde continues, #BonaldeWatch2019. He last pitched for the Cubs in 2016, throwing 57.2 innings as an 18 year old in the DSL. The year before, he threw 39.2 innings for the Cubs affiliate in the final season of the VSL. He was basically terrible both seasons. But then, out of the blue, he was protected on the Cubs AAA reserve list this fall meaning he couldn't be taken in the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft. Obviously, there's only so many spots available, and the fact the Cubs used one of those spots on a guy who hadn't pitched in 2 years and never above the DSL was... intriguing. Alas, we will have to wait a little longer to get our first stateside look at the now 21-year-old mystery man as he will start the year on the South Bend 7-day IL.
  12. In regards to Clifton, AZ Phil confirms he just being stretched out in Mesa after having been technically demoted from AAA Iowa to short season Eugene. He also disclosed the IL lists for every level to start the season: That clears up some questions about how the Cubs were going to retain the depth of pitching they had amassed in AAA. Decisions will have to be made if/when Alzolay, Mills, Tazawa, Tseng, Baldonado, Hedges, Leal, Lillis-White and Corey Black are ready to return. Some of you may have heard about Yasiel Balaguert and Chris Pieters becoming minor league coaches for the Cubs. This article was the first time I had heard that once promising, but oft-injured catcher, Will Remillard will also be joining that group.
  13. Loads of interesting info coming from AZ Phil today: Albertos threw 3 hitless innings in an intrasquad game today but, as Phil pointed out was still wild throwing only 15 of his 30 pitches for strikes. Also, Richard Gallardo and Carlos Morfa are officially stateside:
  14. Let me join the parade of pre-emptive "three cheers for Raisin" posts! What he does takes time, and he does it willingly for us everyday. Thanks, Navin!
  15. FWIW, four Tennessee Smokies pitchers combined for a no-hitter in their exhibition tune-up against Walters State University tonight. Tyson Miller, Michael Rucker, Manny Rondon and Zach Hedges pulled off the minor feat over a pre-planned 7 innings. Nico Hoerner smacked a double and finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. https://www.milb.com/tennessee/news/smokies-hurl-combined-no-hitter-in-exhibition-tune-up/c-305925406
  16. Yeah, it's either him or Barnette and Tony's on a major league contract...
  17. As in he's hurt or he's going to be DFA'd? He had a poor performance against Eugene/Mesa players, and there's a ton of depth in AAA already. I doubt one performance would be reason enough to cut him, but if he was already on the bubble...
  18. Mooney reported it's a lat strain. He's still "shut down". From the same article at The Athletic And this on Amaya's off-season: I don't know what Jaron is talking about when he says "the guys that are hitting around" Amaya being a help to him. That Pelicans line-up looks pretty weak. There are several returning players like Ademan, Mitchell, Wilson and Galindo that could see better numbers the 2nd time around, but no one in that batting order is proven. And the Carolina League is notoriously friendly to pitchers...
  19. Ha! That's awesome! Fun article on April 1st...
  20. Per AZ Phil, C-1B Michael Cruz, 1B Tyler Alamo, INF Austin Upshaw, and OF Luis Ayala have been released.
  21. Wow, AZ Phil had Lange solidly projected in the AA rotation. I wonder if there's a corresponding move coming like one of Rucker, Swarmer or Hatch going from Iowa to Tennessee.
  22. Same place that mentioned Cruz’ uptick in velocity mentioned Albertos was down to 89-91 in 1 inning of work. Yeah, I saw that, too. Don't know what's up with him, but not holding out hope at this point. There's a reason he wasn't including in the above post about upside arms... :(
  23. Asked AZ Phil if he's heard anything and the answer was nope. If he doesn't know, nobody (outside the organization) does...
  24. AZ Phil reports Yovanny Cruz was sitting 94-96 in an intrasquad game today. With Cruz (19), Marquez (20) and Thompson (22) expected to start in SB (with Marquez having a piggy-back until he's fully stretched out or staying behind in ExST), that would be a fairly interesting rotation to follow. Faustino Carrera (20), Derek Casey (23, 2018 9th rounder) and Cam Sanders (22, 2018 12th rounder) appear to be the others rounding out the rotation for now. Depending on the years they have, Cruz and Marquez are candidates for back end of the top 100 next season, I would think. Nice to have some upside pitching in full season ball for a change. There appears to be some moderate upside right behind them. Danis Correa (19), Jeremiah Estrada (20), Yunior Perez (20) who I've always had an irrational hope for, and Kohl Franklin (19) should all be in the Eugene rotation. And my guess/hope is Richard Gallardo (17), Joel Machado (17), Misael Garcia (18 next month), Luis Rodriguez (19), Jorge Remon (18) and Luis Devers (19 next month) will all start in the AZL. Here's hoping Gallardo and someone else from that Eugene/Mesa group emerges as legit this season to form the next wave of upside arms behind Marquez and Cruz.
  25. Some well-informed speculation on upcoming rosters from AZ Phil:
