  1. Doesn't sound like it, unless Blanco wants to come back at a much cheaper price. The Cubs declined Blanco option, and it seems like they might be going cheap with the back up catcher to save money. The potential saved from going with Gregg over Wood and not bringing Blanco back will be the money we probably use to add a RF.
  2. If taking on Peavy's contract is being held up by the new owners needing to approve it, then why wasn't Dempster's deal also held up? Because none of this is true. I was at Wrigley today along with the other reporters. There is no deal in place with San Diego. Hendry asked us what the deal was. And the Cubs are not cutting payroll. I expect it to be between $140 million and $145 million. Have you heard any updates about Peavy, or LH bats the Cubs are going after?
  3. That was posted on here a page or two back, except instead of Marquis having to be traded it was the sale of the Cubs needing to be taken care of as the hold up Yeah I think it's the combo of both. They need the potential new owners to accept his deal long term, but they probably also need to trade Marquis to fit him in the budget for 09. So basically if Marquis gets traded during the winter meetings this board is going to go on overload waiting for the Peavy trade to follow now. Probably, but even if there wasn't these rumors. I'm pretty sure people would be thinking it was to clear salary for Peavy.

  5. Someone posted on another Cubs board that they heard Buster Olney say that the Cubs/Padres have a deal in place. But the Cubs have to trade Marquis and clear his salary before they can do a deal. I dunno how true this is, so take it FWIW.
  6. Glad to hear Len is back through 2011. Len has done a great job, and I really think he's gonna be able to stay here as long as he wants to. Which will hopefully be another 20-30 years until Len retires.
  7. The funny thing is Sullivan brings up non tendering Gaudin, but in the same article he's quoting Lou talking about how Gaudin is in their plans for next year. Now Mike Wuertz isn't mentioned at all, so there's probably a decent chance he's gone. I still think they will end up trading Wuertz, because I don't see his trade value being much worse then Ohman's was a year ago. So if they don't want him back I don't think they will have to non tender him. Personally I hope he's back but if he's making over 1m next year, I can see the Cubs getting rid of his salary.
  8. I honestly don't care what we get in return for Marquis, but it would be nice to get a young relief pitcher, or LH specialist or something like that at least. Especially if were gonna eat 3-4m of his 09 contract.
  9. Gaudin probably won't be non-tendered, this is just Paul Sullivan thinking it's possible. I'm sure Paul doesn't have any actual information about this happening. Gaudin will probably only get a small raise since he didn't have a good year and was mostly a reliever. So I doubt Hendry would non-tender a young guy who can start or pitch out of the pen for us. Personally I think Gaudin is a solid pitcher, especially as a reliever. Last year he sucked in September, but I don't think he was 100 percent when he returned from the DL. Plus like everybody mentioned Hendry isn't gonna take away anymore bullpen depth. Marshall- could be in the rotation if Harden is hurt Samardzija- might be starting in Iowa Guzman- unproven and health issues Wuertz- we all know that he's not one of Lou favorites Cotts- not that good, probably will add another LH reliever cheap Ascanio- 5 plus ERA in Triple A last year If you take away Gaudin from that mix it's really risky. So I don't see these guys pushing Gaudin off the roster, unless they trade Gaudin for another reliever.
  10. I still think Wuertz has some trade value to get something in return. So I think he will end up getting traded for some midlevel prospect.
  11. I really really doubt Chad Gaudin will be nontended. If the Cubs wanna dump his salary they could trade him and get something good in return. If the Cubs need to fit Peavy/RF in their budget I can see him traded to a team that wants him to start for a younger cheaper reliever. I still think he will back with the Cubs next year though.
  12. Of course not, I'm just saying people sometimes act like projections for players is set in stone. We have people on here debating how good or bad Greene will be based on what they thought he would do a year ago if he left Petco, and his final stats from last year. With that information I don't think anybody can call this a good trade or a bad trade. I agree with the options out there for a SS, this was a decent gamble for the Cardinals though. I understand it, I guess I just don't understand the point of it on December 3rd. Especially when that makes us 9 games worse then we were a year ago.
  13. I think he had what would just be a bad year most of the time, coupled with PetCo and playing on a god awful team. Or maybe Greene just lost it and is going to suck now. Thats why people who predict guys stats year after year are usually wrong. Greene could bounce back and it could be a great trade for the Cardinals, but If Greene hits 230 with a 650-680 OPS at 6.5m it's an awful trade. We will just have to wait and see what happens. I'd love to see your studies on how wrong they are. I'm sure they're fascinating. I don't need to have studies, it's common sense that alot guys predicted stats don't happen. Maybe saying usually wrong was the wrong word, but their wrong alot. There's too much of a human factor to predict every player stats. Guys have good or bad years, some guys improve, some guys decline or get hurt, some guys have career years and some guys just lose it. Greene drop off this season is just one example. Another one off the top of my head would be who would have thought Nick Swisher would have a worse season in 2008, then he did in 2007 even though he was playing at US Cellular Field. Or even Rich Hill losing it or Ryan Dempster being awesome. So when I see somebody say my stats say the Cubs will win 88 games next year, in December I find it more funny then interesting.

Greene could bounce back and it could be a great trade for the Cardinals, but If Greene hits 230 with a 650-680 OPS at 6.5m it's an awful trade. It's a gamble, but when there weren't really many other good SS options unless you wanted to pay alot, it's not a bad gamble. If the Cardinals had Ryan Theriot, I don't think they make this trade though. So saying this is way the Cardinals are smart, and were dumb doesn't make alot of sense to me.
  15. I have only been posting here for a few months, but are Meph predictions ever right? I just remember reading him getting bashed alot for being wrong, but I could be mistaken. As for this trade, It's pretty meaningless to me. Greene might be better, but he's not a star in the waiting. I don't see Greene moving from Petco to Busch making a big enough difference to change him from a 740s OPS guy to a 800 plus OPS guy, but thats just my opinion. I think we can all agree that if Greene hits like he did last year, it won't matter what ballpark he plays in.
  16. Greene getting traded to the Cardinals, lets hope he sucks like he did last year. http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2008/12/khalil_greene_o.html
  17. I don't see Hendry trading Lee unless he gets a pretty good return, so I don't see him dumping Lee salary for Peavy. Plus I don't see him trading Lee unless he has a quality replacement in mind to replace Lee. His defense might not be the same range wise, but I still think he saves Theriot/Ramirez a ton of errors. So putting Dunn, Burrell or Giambi at 1b could be pretty scary, and I don't see Hendry doing that. So I only see Lee getting traded if were getting another 1b back in the deal, or Hendry thinks he can get a Nick Johnson, Chad Tracy or another 1b cheap. But when you factor in Lee no-trade, it just seems very unlikely he's traded.
  18. The Giants still have to improve their offense alot before they would have a chance at winning the division. Renteria would help, but he's not nearly enough. Remember this team has a middle of the order of Randy Winn, Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand. If they can add a big bat with Renteria and another SP then it might be possible. Like if they had Derrek Lee? I don't see Derrek Lee agreeing to go to the Giants. Plus who plays 1b for us? I never really saw trading Lee as a realistic option, just a possiblity if it made alot of sense. But Hendry isn't gonna go with DeRosa or Hoffpauir at 1b next year.

  20. I see Bradley almost like Rich Harden, you just hope he's healthy a good chunk of the season. But the most important thing is to have his bat in the line-up for the postseason.
  21. I don't see us going after anybody else. I think Hendry see Peavy as a special player and will try to get him if he can. But otherwise I think there fine with going with a rotation of Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly and Marquis/Marshall.
  22. I'm fine with giving up Pie and Cedeno to get Olson if it means were getting Peavy. But I don't really want much to do with Luke Scott, the guy is over 30 and a platoon player, we can do better for RF. I'd take him over what we have right now, but I don't wanna give up anything of good value to get him.
  23. Ouch! Howry had a 4.50 first half era, and 6.93 second half era. So I don't know what the guy is talking about him having a bad start. Not to mention Piniella pitched Howry in less games and innings then he did from 05-07.
  24. 1y at 2.7m for Howry? I still think there's ahance this guy bounces back. But the Giants should be fixing their roster and getting younger. Instead of getting a 36 year old reliever almost 3m, who was bad last year.
  25. Wow I can't believe were doing this again, Fox and Hendry must be pretty close.
