  1. yeah. obviously it would be nice if dempster were better against lhp and he does lose control of his fastball sometimes, but he's pitched like a good #2 starter, which is basically what he's being paid. he's not making sabathia money ($23m), santana money ($22.9m) or halladay money ($20m) because he's not as good as them, but he's in the next tier. if you're going to get mad at someone, get mad at zambrano. he's the one who's paid like an ace and hasn't pitched that way. I'd quibble with you and say that Dempster is a high #3 starter in the best of circumstances, as opposed to a number 2, but you're right, Zambrano is the one pitcher on the staff who really is not earning his salary. Still, if Dempster is a number 2 or 3, he has to go out and dominate weak offenses consistently (and that Milwaukee team is a mess even with Casey '"ex-Cub" McGehee starting out strong). Let's see what he does with another weak offense in Houston this weekend.
  2. I like winning. I hate Dempster. I hate the contract he signed after 08. He’s really nothing more than a slightly above average pitcher whose career year in 08 outwitted Lou the Great (not a hard thing to do) into not using his best pitcher over the course of September AT ALL during the playoffs. To a left-handed batter, Dempster is nothing but a drum. His five year numbers going from 09 back thru 05: BAA- .281/.243/.259/.310/.278 WHIP – 1.55/1.29/1.53/1.97/1.97 For his career (over 1600 IP, not a small sample size) his BAA/WHIP against lefties is .281/1.73. I’m sure Dempster apologists will say he was just coming back from the injury in 05 and 06, but he’s not nor ever will be an elite pitcher. When he struggles with his command against lefties, he’s no more than mediocre. Given his track record, his career year in 08 is understandable since it’s about the only time he’s ever been half competent against them. Props to Byrd for having a nice day in front of the home fans on his first try. If your $10 mil pitcher can't hold a 4 run lead for 2 innings, why is he on the team as a reliever?
  3. IMO, this is terrible news. Piniella may not be the problem, but I don't think he is a part of the answer anymore either. Has any one man gotten as much mileage out of ONE(!) WS championship (and pennant same season) that occurred almost 20 years ago now? Those Yankee coattails carry a long way obviously. His managerial record includes fumbling away a 116 win season with a truly great Seattle team in 2001, then messing up the Tampa Bay Devils Rays so much that they ended up dropping the Devil part of the name to try and hide the stench from that failed campaign. Being in Florida I got to witness those sorry 3 years firsthand and when the going got tough, he just grew dispirited and finally quit. He is not the person you want to be a part of a building (or re-building) project which is where the Cubs appear to be. Again. Piniella's Cub career was defined when he gambled on Dempster being able to win that first playoff game last year. Dempster lost, the Cubs lost and Piniella lost. Pretty much all the manager needs to do is figure out his playoff rotation, yet his best pitcher down the stretch in 2008, Ted Lilly, couldn't even get into a game. That's on the manager. And that's one (of many) reasons why Piniella should be gone.
  4. Latos, a premier prospect, has nothing tonight. And the Cubs are actually taking advantage! Couldn't beat the 30 ERA guy last night though...
  5. Cubs put first 2 runners on in their half and fail to score. Stunning.
  6. They lost a game in the WC though.. Yes, you are right, but I suspect they are already out of the WC race...
  7. Cards' 5th starter was rocked by the Dodgers tonight so the Cubs actually lost no ground... Unless you consider them under the ground already...
  8. Great news and smart move by the Cubs (and without being catty, how many times has that been said). It may not turn out any better than starting Dempster in game 1, but one can have hope that it will.
  9. As long as the exam results don't entail some worst case scenario, Harden's option must be picked up. For just one year, it is a worthwhile gamble that he will be pitch enough games to help the Cubs get back to the playoffs. If he ends up being injured most of the season or is simply ineffective despite being "healthy", then you can let him walk at the end of the year or sign him at some reduced $ contract for 2010 and beyond. This is not the time to allow ourselves to be scared away from a potential #1/2 starter simply because of the lingering stench of Prior. If he fails, he fails, but his upside is too great to give up on yet.
  10. I'm not so worried about Lieber being relegated (unfairly) to the bullpen since at least he will be available once the Dempster "experiment" comes to its likely end but lets not kid ourselves: Lieber is not likely to be much more than mediocre for any extended stretch of time at this point. And it does enhance Marquis' trade value if he is moved before the regular season since he "won" the starter competition. It is just too bad that the Cubs are so committed to Dempster in the rotation that they couldn't go with Lieber and Marquis from the start since Dempster in the bullpen is not all bad: his splits vs. righties continue to be very impressive going back over the past 3 years.
