  1. Sharma with a fluff piece on Almora... http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/20462/almora-confident-in-future-with-cubs
  2. I refuse to believe any of that.

  4. Irrelevant signing, but figured it should be noted.
  5. Supposedly the terrain changed again when the Cubs expanded the deal with KC to include Darwin and Nate. FO would prefer deals with AL teams. As I said yesterday, the information I have suggests the Cubs will do everything in their power to utilize current major league assets like Shark, Castro, Barney, Scheirholtz and Russell plus non-core prospects (Vitters, Pineyro, McNutt, etc...) to acquire a minimum of 2 prospects, who have "top of the rotation" stuff and are less than 2 years away from the Majors. If we need to include more to make Zimmer + Ventura happen in that deal, would Vogelbach put it over the top? He'd be arriving right around the time Butler's contract is up.
  6. Bradley being off limits doesn't surprise me, if true. Arizona still has some great players to build a trade around. KC and AZ really are two of the best fits for a Samardzija trade. It's nice that they both are apparently in on him.
  7. So Castillo is not being shopped? That Arencibia rumor makes no sense then. Good. I can see "current" truth to that. No reason to shop him unless you get Salty. Maybe Lake isn't being shopped, but he's a perfect 2nd or 3rd piece in a large deal. Not sure his value will ever be higher either. Yeah I don't buy that they're keeping Lake. Obviously they will probably listen, but if they intend to keep Castillo I'd be fine with that, given his improvement over the season defensively. Not shopping Lake makes little sense unless they truly believe he can be our Ben Zobrist... but I don't personally buy into that. I agree with you that he makes a great 2nd or 3rd piece to a bigger deal.

  9. I was surprised to see -.2 WAR for 2013 when I looked him up. The numbers aren't bad and the k/9 is very strong. At 23 he's a great add-on to the deal. Like so many others have noted though, the pitching prospects really spell the value of the deal. Herrera was also a stud in the minors. Over 6 seasons he had 238 IP with 240:58 K:BB ratio and a 1.85 ERA. if you look at his game log, he had two games that really got out of control for him. He gave up 3 home runs (4 runs total) in one outing and 3 runs in another. He had 42 outings where he didn't give up a run. 12 where he gave up 1 run. 3 where he gave up 2. 1 with 3. 1 with 4. Those 5 games can really throw off a relievers entire season's numbers. Nobody is perfect, obviously, but Herrera has some pretty tremendous upside and potential value. The more I look into him the more I like him as a piece in a deal with Kansas City.
  10. If it's Zimmer + Ventura + Cain + Herrera then I'm doing that deal yesterday. That's a fantastic return.
  11. My appreciation for that deal hinges heavily on who those two high end prospects are. I'd tell you if I knew. Prospects' names are rarely revealed when my sources provide info to me. Don't know if that's because they don't know or they don't want me to know. I know, no worries. I actually like targeting Herrera. Under control for 5 more years, only gonna be 24 next season, and K's tons of batters. The Cubs really need a power arm in the bullpen like his. Would be a nice acquisition. I'm indifferent on Cain, long term, but he would make a nice stopgap until Almora is good to go.

  13. Jay Z off to a great start... http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9931457/jay-z-gift-robinson-cano-investigated
  14. I'm intrigued by Chris Owings... his patience leaves much to be desired, but BP had this to say about him in September... He's blocked by Derek Jet... I mean Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hill. 22 years old. Can play SS or 2B it seems. As a 21 year old in AAA hit .330 with 12 HR, 81 RBI, 31 doubles, and 20 SB (but only 22 BB's, ouch). Still, he seems like an intriguing potential target who has no room at the MLB level despite likely be capable to play there now. Would he be a solid prospect to include in a possible Samardzija trade?
  15. I'm not saying your wrong, statistically or mathematically, but do you really think Samardzija for Bradley is a plausible situation that can or will happen?
  16. If Lovullo can't be interviewed, then I think I'm in on the Dave Martinez bandwagon
  17. On a side note, Baseball America keeps getting lazier and lazier with the effort they put into their content presentation. Their site is super difficult to navigate now and everything looks cluttered and hastily thrown together. Their 2014 Top 10 organizational prospects index looks like crap, and their font size choices don't mix well with their site's dimensions and it ends up spacing things out and making things look cluttered. It's annoying to read. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2014-top-10-prospects-index/
  18. Well, in the sense that Kevin Towers is a crazy person and might ask for Samardzija and Castro in order to get Bradley, yes. In terms of actual value, Samardzija is more than enough. In fact, if we're trying to come up with packages, something like Skaggs + Holmberg or Bradley + Eaton would be a decent approximation. If they wanted to give away McCarthy's salary as a 3rd piece I'd be agreeable to that too. Skaggs+Bradley+Eaton for just Samardzija? I don't know how to tell you this buddy ... I think the "or" was a segway to a 2nd offer, not a decision between Holmberg or Bradley. Still, Bradley is now the #1 pitching prospect in baseball. He's what Dylan Bundy was last year before his injury, and Samardzija would not have gotten anywhere near Dylan Bundy. That's not to say Bradley couldn't be had, but Samardzija just isn't the level of pitcher that warrants him in a deal without also giving up other somewhat significant players
  19. 149/200. Luckily some of those old 70s and 80s hitters had pretty generic last names. Remembering Kingman would've filled in a lot of those spots
  20. True, but that doesn't stop it from being complete horse [expletive]
  21. I got to about 130 before I had to start looking up answers. Oddly enough, I filled out the entire 1994 opening day lineup. It's odd when you're put on the spot how many easy to remember players you forget (Barrett, DeRosa, Byrd, Garciaparra)

  23. This is why Vogelbach tweeted he was going to Arizona. It all makes sense now. It does kind of suck that the D-Backs do kind of have an offense built to compete so we couldn't really throw them anyone that they need. My first inclination was to include Barney along with them since they love that scrappy gritty nonsense, but they already got Aaron Hill/Didi Gregorius. Then I thought Junior Lake, but they already got Eaton, Pollock, and Parra. Then I thought Castillo, but they got Montero. Vogelbach? Goldschmidt. Olt? Prado. Honestly I would try and see if they'd do Samardzija and Lake for Skaggs and Parra. I've thought about us asking for Parra in a trade. He's a decent hitter and a tremendous fielder and they have a glut of outfielders at or near the majors. They really do. Just in case people didn't notice, Parra put up a 6.1 rWAR this year (4.6 fWAR) that was mostly a result of elite defense (4.0 dWAR)

  25. As cool as it would be to get Archie Bradley, Samardzija just isn't enough. Skaggs I could see, but not Bradley.
