From Theo's perspective, if the Red Sox want to pull this BS and keep him there an extra year, he might as well call their bluff. Why the hell not? He could sit back, make $7 mil for next year doing nothing, and watch as the Cubs set up the infrastructure for him to come in and take over. Then, after next season, he goes to a Cubs team that has: 1. Soriano's contract 1 season closer to expiration 2. No more Zambrano contract 3. Minor league players from the '11 draft one step closer to the majors The Cubs' situation only gets better in a year; seems to me like the only negative for either the Cubs or Theo is the meathead PR hit they'll take, which both have demonstrated they don't care about. Once again--NOT THAT THIS WILL ACTUALLY HAPPEN. Its just pretty simple leverage from the Cubs/Theo's side.
