  1. Wasn't it widely reported that the White Sox actually offered more money, but wanted Fukudome to play center, and that's why he took the Cubs' offer?
  2. Except for the fact that, since the Orioles traded for Adam Jones and have Markakis in right, they have virtually no position for Pie. My feeling is that this writer is just using rumors from months ago to fill column space.
  3. Proof in defense of the "Out of town beat writers should stick to their own beats" argument: This quote should be used anytime someone (like Sam Smith) writes about how newspaper men are "real journalists" who have journalistic standards that separate them from bloggers.
  4. That's not even close to what's going on, and you know it. This argument is not worth having--it will only devolve into something similar to what went between you and wrigley23 in the Roberts thread, and that's a waste of time. I'm leaving it alone from here on out.
  5. You're right. I don't know what I was thinking. Oh. Apparently, I was thinking of this.
  6. Whatever you have to tell yourself, man...
  7. I woudln't. He won't meet those projections anyways. So are you just one of those people who roots for players you don't like to fail, even if they're on your favorite team? Look, I don't like the fact that Ryan Theriot is the starting shortstop. There is nothing I can do about that, though, so I would be exceptionally happy if he performed well. Its one thing to be realistic about player performance. Its a completely different thing to actually root against that player. Some did that with Jacque Jones last year, and now SOME are doing it with Theriot. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the decision to start him or bat him leadoff, you need to understand that there's nothing you can do to change it, so you might as well root for him to meet those projections, instead of taking your frustrations with management out on a player who has nothing to do with the decision to put him in the lineup each day.
  8. I'd be happy with Theriot in the leadoff spot if meets Bill James' projections for him (.348 OBP).
  9. There it is - "be a man." Maybe my favorite cliche of any on this Board. Seems the list of Cubs that aren't manly never stops growing. Ugh. I think he meant "be a man" in the "be an adult" sense, not "be a tough guy."
  10. This will be even funnier in 2-3 years after Baker gets fired from Cincinnati and hired by some other team, when the fans from that new team try to tell Reds fans that "Baker didn't really have any young talent when he came in to Cincinnati, so he had to play the veterans. It'll be different this time. That Bruce kid? He was never that good anyway."
  11. I'm not concerned whatsoever about his ERA. I'm just a tiny bit concerned about the walks. If its blisters, no problem. I just don't want it to be undiagnosed arm trouble.
  12. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/03/hill-explodes-a.html Sure this is speculation on the part of the wonderful Paul Sullivan, but is anyone else a little bothered by Hill's control issues? Spring training stats are almost always useless, but this number of walks seems a little disconcerting.
  13. You're missing the point. The amount is irrelevant. They were told that they were getting paid for this trip, then after they agreed to go, the payment offer was rescinded. They have every right to demand compensation for the trip if a number was agreed upon. The coaches and players were in the right here and the league should be embarassed for bargaining in bad faith.
  14. Somebody has to recognize the beauty of a "So I Married an Axe Murderer" quote. That person is me.
  15. Great idea. Hopefully, an emergency arises every day.
  16. Got a new column for which I'm soliciting ideas. I'm putting together a list of "the Rules for Cubs Fans" for the 2008 season. In other words, what are things that Cubs fans must do in order to maintain a level of Cub Fan Dignity. For example: No more towel jokes. Anyway, I'm trying to solicit as many ideas as possible so that it becomes a regular feature on this site, so if you wouldn't mind checking it out and maybe posting some ideas, it would be much appreciated. http://fiveoutstogo.com/2008/03/rules-for-cubs-fans-2008-edition-part.html Thanks for all the help.
  17. Thanks for the tips on the sleepers. Here's where I ended up. Thoughts and/or constructive criticism would be appreciated: League: 12 teams, 5x5 scoring C: Victor Martinez 1B: Helton 2B: Weeks SS: Jeter 3B: ARod OF: Sizemore OF: Kemp OF: Hart U: Hafner SP: R. Hill SP: Gallardo SP: Pedro SP: Lincecum SP: Kuroda RP: Soria RP: Gagne RP: Percival Bench: Towles, Yunel Escobar, Milledge, Chavez, Taveras, Prior
  18. I thought the quote was kinda funny. Pretty lighthearted and harmless. Guillen is a nutjob, but a periodically endearing nutjob.
  19. If you read the article, you'll notice that it sounds like Lou is giving this serious consideration for more than just spring training. Meh. I see another Piniella "let's try it and see what happens" here. Don't think it will last...
  20. I have three drafts in the next two weeks, and because of the ridiculous amount of work I've had to do lately, I haven't gotten a chance to do my due diligence in finding good sleepers for the year. Anyone got some suggestions?
  21. I was starting to wonder when I'd hear the broken record again...
  22. People are this upset because Soriano is going to hit second in a meaningless Spring Training game? The season needs to start soon. I'm afraid someone here is going to jump off a bridge if Piniella were to offhandedly mention that Sam Fuld might hit leadoff. Everybody needs a collective Xanax.
  23. Hasn't anyone picked up on the fact that what Lou says and what Lou does are two very different things?
  24. Someone has to carry Theriot's jock strap. According to FireJoeMorgan, that's Bruce's job. I kid, I kid...
  25. He's the setup guy for Rick Vaughn.
