Oh, it was terrific. In the top of the 9th inning of last Sunday's nightcap against the Cardinals, score of 4-2 Cards at the time with two men on and nobody out, Lou brought in Marshall, who promptly walked Nick Stavinoha to load the bases. Needing to remove Marshall but keep him available for the left-handed hitters who were still due up in the inning, Lou got creative. He removed Soriano from the game, moved Marshall to left field and brought in Heilman. Heilman struck out the next batter on a 3-2 pitch, at which point Heilman was removed, Marshall moved back to the mound and Johnson brought in to play left field. Marshall got the next batter swinging, and just for good measure, the final out of the inning was on a diving, stumbling catch by Reed in left field that was clearly a trap and not a catch. Tony La Russa tried to argue the move, Joe Morgan couldn't understand and tried to argue the move, but for what it was, it worked like a charm. Didn't La Russa compliment Lou on having the balls to make that move?
