  1. The reason I put quality in ""s is because in off seasons past, guys like whats left would have long since been gobbled up for well more than they were worth, but teams seem to be a lot more cautious now. Even a pitcher like Garland would have demanded 3 years at at least 10mil/year, and now he signs a 1 year with an option. Adam Dunn Bobby Abreu Orlando Hudson Orlando Cabrera Joe Beimal Joe Crede Ben Sheets Pedro Braden Looper Joe Crede Randy Wolf Jason Isringhausen Oliver Perez Tom Glavine Pudge Varitek Manny Griffey Andruw In the past few years, at this stage in the game, how many names like this would still be available? I know most of these guys are huge ?s, but that wouldnt have stopped teams in the past. Every one of these guys will come at a bargain rate for someone, so theres no harm in seeing what someone like Beimal or Hudson or even Sheets would go for.
  2. The point is it's worth the risk. PTBNLs are rarely worth anything, just some AAer. Id just assume risk giving him another chance and hope for that miracle, and risk getting nothing as opposed to just giving up on him and getting some 28 year old AA middle infielder. so would i, but i can also see where Hendry is coming from on this. I hear you. It seems like more of a case of saving face than anything. The again, If Pie and Hill both do great, and Bradley gets injured, and Gregg sucks, Hendrys aproval rating will hit an all time low, and thats saying a lot, especially around here.
  3. What are we really risking by giving him that chance? Best case scenerio, he finds his control, and we suddenly have a stacked rotation. Worst case scenerio, hes as bad as he was last year, we lose him, and dont get some career minor leaguer in return.

  5. I don't get this reference Hendrys Untouchables. Hes the last of his kind.
  6. ah...the voice of reason Super, so he can go out and sign yet another Marquisesque starter so Sean Marshall can rot away in the pen again. Sorry if Im not excited about the prospects of Braden Looper or Randy Wolf. This is quickly becoming the biggest clustersuck of an offseason in quite some time.
  7. So basically, this means that if Hill does good there, we get something decent, but if he sucks up the joint, we get garbage? Thats the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. How about I go out and buy a lottery ticket, and how much I pay hinges on if I win. Just keep the damn guy, and if he sucks, let him go. If Baltimore still wants him then, more power to them. Seriously, now that Hendrys once bottomless pit of money is all but evaporated, hes showing his true colors.
  8. My memory is a bit hazy, but werent Pie and Hill the guys who Hendry didnt want to give up for Brian Roberts last year? And now it appears as though they'll both be in Baltimore by opening day, and all we'll have to show for it is yeat another middle reliever/spot starter and a player to be named later. Oh good.
  9. Seriously, if all were goig to get out of this is a player to be named later, who 9 times out of 10 ends up a career AAer, the least we could do is hang on to him through spring training and see what he can do. If we end up getting another Doug Deeds type, and Hill cranks out 17 wins for Baltimore, it will not look good for the GM formerly known as Spendry. It seems as though all of Hendrys one time "Untouchables" are being shipped off for next to nothing. Next thing you know, he'll be entertaining offers for Sam Fuld
  10. Its only good news until Hendry digs Jose Macias out of god knows where.
  11. I was wondering why Hill's name was not listed to begin with. Could be had cheap, has MLB experience and had success, only needs mental tweeks. Why not take a flier on him when he could start 30 games this season for them. he has hardly any value right now. Which is why we should just give him a shot at spring training. Whorst case scenerio, he sucks, gets cut, and some other team picks him up, and we dont get the crappy prospect(s) that we would have had we traded him. Bottom line, a productive Rich Hill, although that may be a pipe dream at this point is far more valuable than what anyone would be willing to trade for him at this point, so its really worth the risk of hanging on to him.
  12. I guess we should just be thankful that none of the other teams in our division have done anything to improve themselves. Maybe we'll win a game in the NLDS.
  13. Then we'll have a feeble bench. going from Ward Fontenot Johnson Blanco Cedeno to Miles Bako Gathright Johnson/Fukudome Crappy middle infielder. Make one miss the days of Neifi Macias Walker Bako Hollandsworth
  14. Legit Candidates Sean Marshall Aaron Heilman Jeff Samardzjia Dark Horses Chad Gaudin Rich Hill Mitch Atkins Darker Horses Angel Guzman Kevin Hart Randy Wells Thats enough potential number 5 guys right there. Theres no need to throw money at another mediocre, back of the rotation starter when we're unaware of the teams financial situation.
  15. We just need to win this thing now, before the team gradually morphs back into its 1990's counterpart.
  16. How do you know Hoffpauir will be on the opening day roster? I should have said probably. Otherwise, there wont be anything remotely resembling power on the bench. I imagine Lou would choose the extra bat on the bench over the extra arm, especially since we have so many guys in the pen capable of pitching multiple inings.
  17. Hoff will be on the opening day roster. probably 1 less in the pen, likely Cotts, especially if Marshall is in the pen.
  18. If he can do short Id take him, make a Theriot/Fontenot 2B platoon and do whatever with Miles.
  19. The Peavy talk is becoming worse than Jason. When you think its gone, and theres no way it could come back, there it is.
  20. Not even remotely close to being true. Even if it were close in raw numbers (and it isn't), losing Wood in high-leverage situations (or rather, having Marmol move into his spot and losing him in high-leverage situations), makes it much, much worse. Im guessing Heilman gets the 5th rotation spot and Marshall is in the pen, or else were sans lefty. Its really not a bad looking pen at all, especially if Guzman can stay healthy, and Gaudin and Wuertz can both do what they're capable of. The question is, is Heilman and upgrade, downgrade, or a wash in relation to Marquis?
  21. Ronny Cedeno has very little value, the Cubs would be lucky to get a mediocre minor league reliever for him. I knew from day one that the Cubs weren't gonna get Cedeno for Heilman straight up. Olson obviously is the guy with the value in this trade, but I don't think he has a ton of value either. People are just pissed off because they thought Olson was part of a Peavy deal. But nobody ever said we had to have Olson to get Peavy. Heilman's going to be 30 years old next season and saw his production fall off a cliff last year thanks to a loss of control, which prompted speculation about his health. He hasn't started a game in the majors since 2005. I don't think he is better than Olson, quite frankly. That's the part of this deal that doesn't make much sense to me. Heilman pretty much had the same problem Rich Hill had last year, only wasnt sent down immediatly. We all know how tolerant Lou is of pitchers with control issues.
  22. I wonder if the Padres have interest in Heilman.
  23. Ive never been a big Hendry basher in the past, but the way this off season has gone, IM seriously questioning his contract extension. -The result Bradley addition remains to be seen -He couldnt wait to jump all over Dempster for 4 years, and now similar pitchers are available at significantly discounted prices -Trades DeRosa for a handful of low level prospects, supposedly so he could afford Bradley -Gives up Pie for a one time pitching prospect, and then flips said prospect along with our backup short stop for yet another onetime pitching prospect of equal or lesser value -But look on the bright side, we could get Paul Bako and Juan Uribe. Yay us.
