  1. Hoff is the closest thing to power we have off the bench, so unless we end up signing another Cliff Floyd or Daryl Ward type, I think he stays. Now that we have righty full time CF, I really dont see Reed coming back.
  2. It will be hard to trade him after Dusty toasts his arm after a year and a half.
  3. Thomas Diamond and Ezequiel Astacio are also pretty safe bets.
  4. They also got Khalil Greene, for what its worth.
  5. I'd rather have Pods at 1/$1.75 than Byrd at 3/$15. Better yet, how about a platoon of Reed Johnson and Fuld for the same as Pods is getting paid. Hendry just loves wasting money on average players. This was my proposal all along, but unfortunately, whenever Hendry has a bit of extra money to spend he uses it like an 8 year old with a Toys R Us gift card. what did you think reed johnson was going to sign for? Something like 1/3.5 or 2/6. Hes not exactly generating a lot of interest from other teams.

  7. Sort of an odd pickup for a team who likely wont be able to compete, even in a division as watered down as the AL Central.
  8. If Hendry insists on overpaying for one another pitcher, Id prefer he go all out and persue Sheets or Bedard.
  9. Intersting. Hed actually been very good in his year and a half in Phillie.
  10. Since nobody really cares about Bill Hall or Casey Kotchman, I lobby to change the title of this thread to the Obtuse Thread.
  11. I think Alomar is HOF matrial, but not necessarily 1st ballot matrial.
  12. I dont know why I thought he was a lefty. This being the case, I have no idea why theyd bat him ahead of Soriano and Soto.
  13. And we do. Both Baker and Fontenot have what it take to be above average 8 hitters, and if we can get any kind of rebound from Soto, he'll be a well above average 7 hitter. I'm talking about hitting #2. And if Soto rebounds you're nuts if you want him hitting all the way down at #7. Thats the beauty of a solid linup though. Ideally, if both Soto and Soriano rebound, youd want 3-6 to be Lee, Aram, Sorino, Soto, but we all know Lou well enough to know that hes not going to go with 4 righties in the middle of the order, unless maybe were facing a lefty, but otherwise, Byrd is going to make his way to the 5 spot, or at least the 6, unless Fontenot is to have some kind of surge and make his way there. As for Theriot at the 2 spot, traditionally, the 1-2 guys are going to be table setter for the power guys to send them home.

  15. Theriot really is a taditional #2 type hitter. Solid .avg, solid OBP and some speed, but not enough of any to hit leadoff. let the 3-5 guys(6 too with a good lineup) hit for OPS, but not everyone is going to OPS .900. Hes more a #2 hitter than he is a 7-8 hitter who are generally .250-.260 hitters, sometiems with a touch of power, sometimes not..
  16. Agred. My ideal lineup would be more like Fukudome Theriot Lee Ramirez Soriano Byrd Soto Baker P Theriot and Baker could switch as well, but for some reason, Lou has Soriano as a 6 hitter.
  17. If the season started today, the NL Central linups would look something like: Cubs What you said Cards w/o Holliday 1. Schumaker 2. Lugo 3. Pujols 4. Ludwick 5. Rasmus 6. Molina 7. Ryan 8. P 9. Freese/Greene Cards w/ Holliday 1. Schumaker 2. Rasmus 3. Pujols 4. Holliday 5. Ludwick 6. Lugo 7. Molina 8. Ryan 9. P Brewers 1. Weeks 2. Escobar 3. Braun 4. Fielder 5. McGhee 6. Hart 7. Zaun 8. Gomez 9. P Stros 1. Bourn 2. Matsui 3. Pence 4. Berkman 5. C. Lee 6. Feliz 7. Keppinger 8. Towles 9. P DBR 1. Tavares 2. Dickerson 3. Phillips 4. Votto 5. Bruce 6. Rolen 7. Hernandez 8. Janish 9. P We have a lot of solid lineups here, but nothing dazzling. Pretty evenly matched. Of course, if the Cards to resign Holliday, they'll be the clear favorite. St. Lou also has the best pitching by far. The Cubs may not be the clear favs as they were the past 2 years, but will definitely be in the running.
  18. Just a possibility. While the 2 sides couldnt agree on the players, the money was also a factor, and had we kept DeRosa, and not spent the money on Bradley, there may have been the money left to make the Peavy thing work. What Im really trying to say is that while the players we got back for DeRosa were a more than satisfactory return, the money thrown away on Bradley more than cancels them out.
  19. Im not going to complain about the return for DeRosa, however in hindsite, imagine we hung on to DeRosa and never signed Bradley. Imagine that the playoff choke didnt cause Lou and Jim to panic and get more left handed. We keep DeRosa for the 2009 season, and let him go after. Yeah, we dont get 3 very solid pitching prospects in return, however, we have about 20 milion dollars more to spend over the next 2 offseasons. Who knows, maybe we even end up with Peavy somehow. I know hindsite is 20/20, but I think that money would be more valuable than Gaub, Archer, and Stevens.
  20. Yup. The last thing we need is another player who happens to be black getting booed because they suck and get called racist again.
  21. So now that Byrd is a Cub, can we assume that the 2010 opening day roster is pretty close to taking shape? 1. Kosuke Fukudome CF 2. Ryan Theriot SS 3. Derrek Lee 1B 4. Aramis Ramirez 3B 5. Alfonso Soriano LF 6. Marlon Byrd CF 7. Geovany Soto C 8. Jeff Baker 2B SP Carlos Zambrano SP Ryan Dempster SP Randy Well SP Tom Gorzolanny SP/BP Sean Marshall SP/BP Jeff Samardzjia SP/BP Carlos Silva BP Jeff Gray BP John Grabow BP Angel Guzman CL Carlos Marmol BP Berg/Caridad/Stevens/Parisi/Gaub C Hill OF Fuld IF/OF Hoffpauir IF Fontenot IF Blanco
  22. This part bothers me, especially considering we already have a below average left fielder. It could be a bumpy 2010.
  23. 3 mill for this year should give us room to make more moves for now. But, I guess the worst thing about this deal is actually that our OF is now going to be Soriano/Byrd/Fukudome for the next 2 years almost assuredly. I can't see us going after Crawford or anyone else that may be available over that time frame. I suppose if we really wanted Crawford, Fukudome might be tradeable next offseason, especially if he batters righties like he did the 2nd half of last year and can excel again in RF. Yeah, wed have to eat some salary, but hopefully not too much.
  24. I guess unlike other Cubs signings of the past few years, Byrd wasnt signed to be a savior, just to play a position and give decent production. As long as we can get rebounds fom Soriano and Soto, we could do a lot worse than Byrd as a 2 or 7 hitter, and at 3.5 mil for '10, Hendry still has about 5 mil or so to overpay for another mediocre middle reliever, so everybodys happy. Except for the fans of course. They'll be more indifferent than anything.
  25. Could it be that Boras just plain doesnt want Holliday in St. Louis, and unlike Pujols, hes a mercinary and going to do what Boras wants? Boras usually likes his big name guys in big markets like New York, Boston, LA, and Seattle, and St. Lou doesnt cut it. For the same reason, I find it very doubtful that Fielder signs a long term deal with Milwaukee after this season.
