  1. While Dye would be a solid bench bat, there are also other options for a bit of thunder off the bench, such as Ryan Garko, Russ Branyan, Hank Blalock, abd Chad Tracy. It could be a matter of weeks before these guys are available for <2 mil, which would be a very good deal.
  2. Did Bruce ever chime in on this discussion? I've been trying to keep up with his blogs on DH, but haven't seen him comment yet. I'm guessing that the Cubs are simply involved only if the price for Sheets is bargain basement price, which I doubt will happen with all of the interest. I have seen anything from Bruce, but during the MLBTR live chat yesterday, someone asked the % chance they felt that Sheets would land with the Cubs and they said 15%.
  3. the thread made it amost 5 full pages before being hijacked by nonsense.
  4. How many names and seasons from the last seven years or so could you plug into that sentence to describe Cardinal players, though? Ryan Ludwick, Rick Ankiel, Kyle Lohse, and Aaron Miles are the most recent that come to mind, and I suspect that Franklin and Joel Piniero will be right behind them. Tony Womack, Ray King, it goes on and on... I forgot about Womack. The guy was worthless for us, and decided to have his 1 good year with the Cards.

  6. The level of pay for that type of player varies significantly. Jason Giambi signed for $4m last year in a limited role. Dye already went from making $11.6m in the final year of his last Oakland contract to making $4m in his first year with the CWS. Reed Johnson played last year at $3m. I would imagine somebody as close to the end of his career as Dye is, who has never had a $100m type contract, would be willing to entertain offers in the $2-4m range in a reduced role if nobody is looking to offer him more to be a starter. Too bad for him that he collapsed so bad in the second half of last season or he could be looking at a 2 year deal, maybe even 3 at something like 7-8 mil/year. As I recall he was on pace for a 40-50 home run season around the all star break and ended up with 27.
  7. For the money, Id prefer Rick Ankiel who can play defense. Dye would be a nice bat off the bench, but Id much prefer use the money for something more usefull.
  8. Jeff Kennard? EDIT: To answer my own question, hes a career minor league righty reliever who split time between the Yankees and Angels systems, and landed with The Reds AAA team in 2009 where he posted a 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.
  9. I wish him the best of luck, as long is its not the Cardinals.
  10. it was 10-12 each year, not overall OMG, you're right. I had read in another thread on this board that it was 10-12 over 2 years, but when I googled it, the only thing I could find was that he is seeking that amount per season. That's ridiculous. With situations like this, I wonder how much of it is the player himself and how much his agent.
  11. My guess is his agent is trying a last attempt to ignite a good old fashioned Yankees/Red Sox bidding war before accepting something closer to the 5-6 mil/year+incentives.
  12. [expletive] John Grabow. If we had the money to spend, I wouldn't guarantee $10 million a year for Sheets anway. I think he wanted 10-12mil over 2 years, which Id defintiely do. Theres no way in hell hed get 10mil/year after sitting out 2009. That is correct. That was over 2 years. The sad news is that Cubs officials are saying that they can't afford it. That means their payroll situation is tighter than I thought. Which brings me back to [expletive] John Grabow, or at least his contract and the doofus who gave it to him.

  14. [expletive] John Grabow. Misplaced anger. [expletive] Jim Hendry. I know. Its just the stupidity of the situation. If it werent for Hendry, Grabow would be very lucky to get a 2 year/4 mil deal, but no, Hendry had to jump in and outbid himself, and now there are some key pieces out there that we could have for cheap.
  15. The fact that these pieces like Sheets, Ankiel, Calero, andmaybe even Valverde that we could really use are getting cheaper by the day makes the Grabow deal look worse and worse.
  16. Hahaha Because you know...their pitching skill is roughly equivalent and all.... On a side note, did anyone see that article over the weekend that suggested that Rothschild has been watching video of Silva and noticed some flaws in his delivery that he was going to work on. If Rothschild were able to make Silva a quality starter(I know we are talking Duncan-like pixie dust and all), would he finally get some credit? Whatever Rothschild does, Silvas ceiling is probably Jason Marquis.
  17. What? What does Maddux working in the front office have to do with Sheets returning to form? How does Maddux, in any way shape or form, improve Sheets' chances. The Cubs more or less have to do this, or something similar, to get back to last year's level of performance. Regardless if Maddux is in the front office, pitching coach, or mascot, he has nothing to do with Sheets success. Its all about staying healthy.
  18. Actually, considering Khalil Green went for 750K, Ankiel might be had for 1.5 mil.
  19. This being said, Id be very interested in Ankiel if hed take something like a 1/3 deal. Certainly no more than $3 million. He made $2.8 million last year and didn't do anything to deserve a raise. Thats what IM saying. As of now, Fuld and Hoff are perfectly adequate as 4th and 5th outfielders, but if we could get an experienced lefty power bat for a scrap heap price, who also plays a pretty solid defense, Id be all for it.
  20. This being said, Id be very interested in Ankiel if hed take something like a 1/3 deal.
  21. That would be a very smart risk and I really hope it happens. A rotation of Z Sheets Lilly Dempster Wells would defintely raise my faith in the 2010 Cubs.
  22. Id like to see him work closely with Randy Wells, who like Maddux is a finesse guy. Im noit saying that Wells is anything close to the next Maddux, but since they have similar styles, in that neither was ever the type that woukd blow the hitter away with gas, and both rely on hitting their spots, and Wells, not to mention any other pitcher could learn alot from Mad Dog.
  23. calero as FA >>>> heath bell in trade I wonder if Valverdes price is dropping due to the limited interest. Id give him 1 or 2 years in a heartbeat if we have enough money left.
  24. Especially if Huff and DeRosa can put up solid numbers, the Giants could be quickly becoming division favs, or at least Wild Card, and if it comes down to the playoffs,I dont think any team would want to face Cain and Lincecum in a 5 game series, or even a 7 game.
